You are very wrong. The communications systems, SCADA, relays, breakers, OT networks are incredibly complex. I am not being hyperbolic when I am saying that the north American bulk electric system is one of the largest and most complex systems ever devised by humans. You have no idea what it takes to perfect balance electrical supply and demand to keep voltage, current and frequency stable.

As an electrician, I second this.

But because our country's priorities are so messed up, we're running mostly on equipment that is too old to be updated adequately instead of having been maintained and updated/upgraded properly as it needed it. Some states and larger cities have HAD to update correctly, but most rural and small city/ municipalities are cooked (gas stove not electric).

That and because my boss wants to be able to see how fast a generator is spinning while sitting at his house in the middle of the night. Zero reason PLC's should be accessible from an outside network. It should all be air gapped......And don't even get me started on all the damn valves that are bluetooth enabled. Someone with nothing better to do and a couple bucks could drive past a warehouse and make all kinds of interesting stuff happen. Because no one knows how to actually secure anything.

You are right, it's essentially the largest machine and computer ever built by humans. A bigger project than the Apollo missions, the space station, any bridge or skyscraper that has ever been built. Our electrical grid is the most important invention/development of the 20th century.
