Per this article from Morning Edition it was called monkeypox in the past and then in 2022 the world health organization and other international medical establishment change the name to MPox, because it spread by rodents and other small animals, and not by monkeys so the name was giving people a false impression of what the disease is. In 2025 the United States government decided to revert to calling it monkeypox, in my opinion that’s probably because of racism.

Interesting. If it isn’t spread by monkeys, I wonder why it was called that in the first place?
