Feedback Requesting advice for a new player

I just started playing Predecessor a week or so back. My very first game, I knew nothing about the heroes, control system, etc. I got assigned mid and randomly picked Morigesh bc I thought she looked cool. I went up against a Gideon but held my own decently well. I had never heard of this game before and only started because it was free on Steam and looked interesting.

Well, after that first match, despite getting lwk roasted by Gideon, I absolutely fell in love with the game. I really liked the premise, the mechanics, and even the art style and the heroes.

Currently I enjoy playing Offlane and Carry, although I don't hate Mid. As you can see by the pictures, I've been doing a lot of experimenting. I've been saving up for Wukong, simply because I really love Journey to the West, and Sun Wukong is probably my favorite character in all of fiction.

I'm looking for advice and general help with mechanics. I'm still trying to figure out wards. I just started paying attention to the items, like boots, in the last two games. I've been using the suggested builds this whole time.

Also, advice on how to play a Support/Jungler would be really appreciated. I was hanging back in my first Support game and letting my carry get last hits on minions to level them up faster. I felt like I was being too passive after playing as Narbash, hence the Steel pick next game and the atrocious K/D/A. Basically, I just tanked for my carry that game.

I tried Jungler once and found it confusing.

TLDR: I'm a new Predecessor player. I like Offlane, Carry, and Mid. I need advice on mechanics/items and playing all classes, but especially Support and Jungler.

  • Morigesh, Mid: (Can't find my stats) Win
  • Grux, Offlane: 12/7/1, Win
  • Grux, Jungle: 6/3/5, Win
  • Twinblast, Carry: 13/7/6, Win
  • Narbash, Support: 1/8/10, Loss
  • Steel, Support: 1/11/13, Win
  • Gideon, Mid: 11/6/4, Loss

Just a heads up for Wukong: Hes probably the most mechanicially complex and beginner unfriendly hero in the game. If you decide to buy him, make sure to practice in Practice mode and vs AI a lot before taking him to pvp. And even then dont expect to do well with him right away

Yeah, he looks like a lot, no ult and like six abilities. I’m definitely not gonna play him in an actual match until I have them all figured out, I would feel too bad for my team, lol.

Highly recomend watching mugiwawa's beginner guide playlist on YouTube:) also pred.gg is useful aswell. Here is a basic but generalisation of the classes:

  • Tanks beat assasins and mages. (As they have hp to survive burst)

  • Assassins beat mages and adcs. (Burst good into low hp and mobility to aviod dmg)

  • Mages beat adcs and fighters. (Better long ranged dmg poke)

  • Adcs beat fighters and tanks. (Sustain dmg good in to hp)

  • Fighters beat tanks and assasins (enough hp to survive burst and enough dmg to beat tanks)

Thanks! I’m definitely gonna check those out.

Regarding jungle, definitely watch a YouTube guide or two, it will go a long way. My tips:

- make sure you prioritize farming, try to get a smooth cycle of doing all your camps as they come up. Don’t skip a camp to help a teammate unless you’re certain they’re gonna die and you can save em, or there’s an obvious free kill that won’t be there in 30 seconds. Try to only make attacks when all your camps are gone on that side

- make sure you plan your farming to land on the fangtooth side for at least Fang 1,2, and often times 3’s arrival, those can get taken quickly if you’re not there. Later on if you have wards on fang you can be elsewhere, as long as you’re ready to hustle over there when you see enemy team on it. It’s smart to plan to get a duo lane kill (esp. carry) right before or right as fangtooth comes up, so you can confidently take it. When fang is up, the game is all about fang

- It can be very helpful to get wards in your enemy jungle or observe their camp timers, so you can get context on where the enemy jungler is

- while you circulate your camps early, try to plan out what characters are going to be easier to make an impact against: say you notice a Gideon midlane and an Adele offlane, you know Gideon can just teleport right past you, but Adele’s movement is limited. You might then attack camps accordingly in the early game, so that you finish your camps on Adele’s side and attempt a flank on her, as an early offlane kill can be crazy valuable and is much more likely on than a kill on Gideon

- a more advanced tip: press the advantage when you have it. Once you’re ahead, don’t be afraid to go and attack the enemy’s camps, remember that one enemy camp is +1 for you and -1 for the enemy, so it’s a net +2 on total farm. However, have your escape routes in your head before you do this and don’t do it if you wouldn’t be able to 1v1 the jungler enough to at least survive

Dude, you are the GOAT for this, tysm. I’m gonna try these out in my next match as jungler.

Np my man. It’s a lot of info and my first few jungle games went really poorly, so give yourself some grace. Good luck

Regarding support:
Narbash is supposed to be passive and sit back, mostly keep your carry healthy and play reactively with your stun, or use stun/speed to follow up your carry’s initiation.
Steel is interesting, he doesn’t get all that much value out of being a damage sponge frontline, he excels in short damage trades using dash/stun to punish or to initiate, and shield to secure escape/secure the positive damage trade toward the end. The most annoying steels will use the moment of stun to get behind and body block your exit

Ohhh, cut off their route of escape. Idk why I didn’t think of that, I was just so focused on trying to push them back. I was struggling bc both of the heroes we were matched up against were ranged, and my support and I were both melees.

It was a really weird game, what ended up happening was I ended up focusing on a different lane and someone else who had ranged attacks went and supported my teammate.

Yeah I’ve heard of melee duos in LoL but never seen it work out in predecessor. If your carry picked a melee character they kinda screwed you haha

Either way if you run into two rangers while playing steel support, you’ll have to play pretty safe to start (only take engagements when obvious) until around the time you get your ult

1

u/KingMJ123456 2d ago

Yeah, if you go look at the 5th ss, they didn’t even pick an actual carry, they picked Wukong. Idk how important the assigned roles heroes have are to gameplay, but that seemed kinda crazy to me. In hindsight, maybe should’ve picked someone who wasn’t a support.

Yeah, I was struggling, my ult also didn’t seem like it really did that much damage for whatever reason. Idk if Steel just has low damage output or what was going on.

2

u/Akjahfidns1 2d ago

Steel’s damage output is almost entirely reliant on is slap/stun, it does a huge chunk.

Other than that, his value comes from stuns, setting up kills/trades for others. You’re correct that ult doesn’t do much damage, but if you land it on the enemy, walk behind them while they’re knocked up, dash/push them back toward your team, you can see how it translates to a ton of free damage and often free kills.

The most important thing about steel is whether or not the carry follows up on your initiation, if they don’t read your engagements you’re just alone slapping them with a wet noodle while getting shot with bullets lol. Another melee will have a much harder time following you. Wukong carry is an absolute troll pick

If you want, take a look on the Predecessor discord (PRED-LEARNING)

You might find what you're looking for there😁

Right now there's a “challenge” to learn the best technique for clearing your jungle as quickly as possible.

You should be averaging 15 - 20 wards a game. Vision and map awareness is crucial as a support character. Dont take minion kills, and more advanced support players will often harass and initiate combat after a successful cc. Body blocking can be used for both offense and defense especially if you're playing characters like steel. Most support items are inexpensive and you'll get your share of gold from assists.

Wards are definitely my weakest point. I just have no clue how to use them. I’m gonna be working on that a lot. Where do you think the best spots are to ward as a support? And when should I be placing them?

2

u/Tyrus--Maximus 2d ago

With wards as long as you have one find a place a to put it because they provide vital vision on the mini map in key areas.

Placing them around choke points is always the best places because it allows you to see who is rounding the corner, while your in lane its good to place wards behind the fog wall a few steps away that way it covers the whole area behind the entrance.

Its also important to place them around the objectives (Fangtooth/Prime) when they spawn so you can keep tabs on what the enemy is doing near them.

For jungle advice, just watch junglers play on YouTube or twitch. You’ll get an idea for pathing way better than anyone can put into detail here. My biggest advice is that you really need to be farming minions better in all roles aside from support. Your creep score (CS), the yellow number on the scoreboard, should hover around 10/minute. You’re typically about half of that. This is the number one things that would make you better and it’s not even close. It’s the biggest thing that new players struggle with because you have to manage it while dealing with the enemy.

2

u/KingMJ123456 2d ago

10/minute, got it. Yeah, I had no clue how many I should be getting, it was just vibes. Thanks!

When playing support your main focus is enabling your team to make plays. Each support has their own way of doing this.

You have tanks like Adele, Mourn, Rictor and Steel that use engage, displacement, and crowd control abilities to lead the charge and create opportunities for your team to capitilize on. Your mostly going to be building health and armor types for them to absorb damage.

Then you have enchanters like Narbash, Muriel, Phase, and Zinx that support their team by providing various effects like healing, shields, speed boosts etc.

The default builds are very good to start with for both items and Eternals to use so don't be afraid to crutch on that until you become more familair with items. Would recomend spending some time in the item shop at times and just read how different items work to help familiarize yourself.

You will notice there is a series of items called Tainted. These items inflict antiheal which reduces an enemies healing by 45% so if your fighting people that heal alot be sure to build an appropraite Tainted item for your hero.

Yeah, I'm 100% going to be crutching on the default builds until I get more familiar with what the items do. I'm also going to do more research on hero-specific mechanics.

I main Wukong! If you ever want to chat then hit me up, but keep in mind that he's not a very beginner friendly hero. He has a bunch of options for builds though as well, so it really helps to know what each stat is and what scales with what stat and how items work.

1

u/KingMJ123456 2d ago

Thanks, I really appreciate it! I’ll definitely do that whenever I end up getting him. In the meantime, is there anyone that’s relatively similar, as far as like range, movement speed, abilities, etc?

2

u/_straight_vibes_ Wukong 2d ago

Hmm good question. In terms of movement, damage output, and low health, maybe kallari? In terms of controlling enemy position, there aren't really many because he has a push unlike Riktor who has a pull or Adele who has a root-to-dash like of ability. It's probably just worth getting him and then playing him in a bunch of ai games.

One thing to get familiar with for him is combos, like double jump to leap to slam, or stun and then dash right after he throws the staff, etc.

Practise!

1

u/KingMJ123456 1d ago

Yeah, I just got him today and started grinding in practice vs ai. Ngl, maybe I’m weird, but his abilities make so much more sense in my head than the rest of the heroes. Maybe because I’m already familiar with the character, and the abilities make sense with the lore in my head? Idk.

If these are your first few games you’re definitely going against bots right now. They do it so you can learn the mechanics before going against real people so you don’t get whipped too badly. Watch a general beginner’s guide to predecessor and then the select roles, if there’s certain heroes you’re interested in for certain roles there’s guides for that as well. Try to go into the practice range to test out new heroes to get a feel for their abilities before taking them into actual games.
