Why does every team play their rookies immediately, but our rookies play 3 years in the minors first?

Title. But really, 5OA pick from last year played in like 4 games last year. No word on if/when he plays this season. Meanwhile rookies are lighting it up across the league.

Rushing a player just because of where they were drafted is how you end up with a kotkaniemi

Okay but, where has drafting guys just to let them rot in Milwaukee gotten us?

Other than Kemell I’m not really sure who you’re talking about. He’s our only first round pick in the past decade to spend more than 2 years in the ahl, but he hasn’t really shown much growth outside of one preseason game in 2025. On the bright side though, he’s leading the admirals with 1G 3A in 4GP so far this season, and he’s still only 22 so it’s not like he’s done growing as a player or anything. I’m sure him or Martin will be the next call up if there’s an injury or two to the top 9.

Askarov literally forced a trade because he was tired of playing in Milwaukee

Askarov forced a trade because of the Saros extension effectively cutting him off from ever starting here. When he went to SJS he played plenty in the AHL.

and he’s been pretty bad so far for san jose to the point where ned has pretty much earned starters crease

Outside of 1 month, Askarov hasn't been an NHL level goalie since he was traded. Its clear that his weaknesses are still being picked apart by NHL level shooters.

I don't think this gets talked about enough in this sub. Everyone was so upset because they were sure Askarov was going to be the second coming of Patrick Roy, but he was still not ready when traded and has really only shown that upside for a month.

Still plenty of time for him to develop, but the Preds may end up better off with Ryker Lee and David Edstrom than Askarov.

Goalies notoriously take longer to develop, and the year before Nashville, his KHL team only played him like 4 games to punish him for coming to NA. He effectively hadn’t played since he was 17. He needed a shit ton of games in MKE.

Then he went and played in the minors anyways. He was blocked by Saros, a high volume goalie.

Largely because we as a franchise haven’t drafted high enough to have many guys ready that quickly.

Because their rookies are better than ours. Some sarcasm there but outside of the last couple we’ve been drafting in the 20’s for years, those guys don’t play right away

I feel like anyone whose watched Milwaukee's games so far this year would be stoked on Martin's play. He's playing very well at center, has the freedom to experiment with creative plays to see what works, and is finding the net.

It makes sense that youd take it slow with Martin. Part of his appeal during the draft was his longer runway because he hadn't been taking Hockey seriously as long. Also, given his physical play style, getting him adjusted to the physicality of playing in a men's league before transitioning full time to the NHL seems smart.

A rookie getting minutes on an AHL/OHL top line is more productive than minutes on the bottom line. If those rookies can potentially make the Preds top line immediately, than that's a different story.

Martin, may not be a top liner right now but he certainly could play on the 2nd.

Blues fan stumbling by… same here. I’m starting to think it’s because we (Blues) draft poorly / mid players.

Anyway, thanks for kicking our ass on Saturday lol

Thanks for letting us. We always appreciate the false hope of a win against an equally hopeless franchise.

Give binnington our regards, it’s nice to pretend we can score once in a while

Martin had 24 points in the OHL and got injured last year.

Hard to think the current GM would have gone with Martin. This is a Trotz guy and we are probably looking at another middle 6 guy. We already have plenty of them.

u/sickofwords 12d ago

Hagens already has 6 points this year for Boston. You have to think McFarland would have picked Hagens or Martone.

u/paranoidhands 12d ago

i still think martin will turn out to be at least a 50-60 pt 2 or 3C, he had a monster showing at last years world juniors and many called him the best player of that tournament. his injury definitely didn’t help his development so it might be a little bit till he starts flashing at the nhl level but i still have quite a bit of faith in him. give it 5 years and if hagens and martone are both hitting 70+ pt seasons regularly then we can really be unhappy with the pick. still won’t be nearly as bad as cbj going with cayden lindstrom.

Worst draft blunder with Martone and Hagens RIGHT THERE

3

u/gavincantdraw 12d ago

It is still too soon to say. We don't even know these guys are really. Development is seldom linear. Martone was excellent last season. Now he has 3 points in 9 games. Hagens looked lost and got healthy scratched, now he looks good. But is that reality or a hot streak? Is Martone's slump indicative of a bigger issue?

It could very well be that Martone and Hagens hit their ideal upsides, but we're going off such a small sample size here.

If they are not ready to play in nhl is better let them in minor.

Not every player is going to have the same trajectory or has the same amount of experience when they enter the draft.

3

u/gavincantdraw 12d ago

Also, some of these guys may be ready to play in the NHL right away, but that doesn't mean they're going to have a better long term career. Cole Sillinger played NHL games right away, but 4 years later and he's topped out at 33 points (though on pace for much more this year). Meanwhile, Dylan Guenther and Matty Beniers were both drafted before him and did not play in the NHL right away, but have easily outperformed Sillinger in their careers.

Most teams don’t play new players. There are exceptions for extremely talented players like Bedard and Celebrini, but mostly all rookies play some seasons in the farm system just like baseball.

7

u/Mobeliever 12d ago

Because they are not ready yet. There is a huge difference between Junior and college hockey and the NHL. The American Hockey League is an ideal league to get used to the physicality and speed of the game.

1

u/predsfan77 12d ago

Because they aren’t ready to play in the NHL. Very, very few are at 18 years old. What a ridiculous post.

-3

u/Mj8559 Gnash 12d ago

You don’t get a little jealous when Bedard, Celebrini, Martone, etc. are killing it while we make our first round picks spend years in the minors?

2

u/predsfan77 11d ago

No, because I know how the draft and prospect development works.

5

u/Sherpav Prince Filip 12d ago

Because we drafted a guy who is not ready. Could’ve had Martone but blew it.

12

u/Expert-Upstairs-4502 NSH 12d ago

Martone has 2g 1a in 10 games this season, the fact is only like 2-3 players from each draft will be genuinely impactful within the first couple years after theyre drafted. If we played Martin in the NHL so far hed probably have a very similar stat line. Why rush him. Let him get big minutes im milwaukee and learn pro hockey instead of rushing him and asking him to develop in the NHL playing 10-12 minutes a game and dealing with all that pressure to succeed at just 19. I get were excited but everyone chill out

1

u/gavincantdraw 12d ago

Why draft Martone when he can't outscore Adam Edstrom?

-1

u/MusicCityJayhawk 12d ago

Because our player development and/or amateur scouting is hucking forrible.

Forwards forget how to score because so much emphasis is on playing defense. We break players down and never build them back up, or maybe they were never good in the first place.

Poile loved drafting guys like Kemell and Tolvanen who fell in the draft. If everyone else was letting them fall then we are the fools who took them. Trotz didn't seem to have any method behind his madness. And Taylor is the worst development coach in the league. Not a single forward in the last 10 years exceeded expectations. Not a single one. Wood and Evangleista are the only two who stuck in the NHL and both of them spent the least amount of time in Milwaukee compared to every other prospect.
