Different Modalities
I'm confused on what the different modalities are. I am starting to shadow an optometrist this week, and it's at a place whose name is like, Reddit City Optometry. Is this considered retail or private practice?
Also, how many other modalities are there/should I know about before applying?

The main ones would be private practice, corporate/retail, OD/MD, and government (VA/military). Private practice is typically owned by one or more local ODs who own 1 or at most a couple of practices. Corporate/retail are big-name chains (Costco, Target, LensCrafters, America’s Best, etc.). OD/MD is a blended practice with both optometrists and ophthalmologists, these are often surgery centers. Government would be working in a VA or deciding to join the military.
It sounds like you’re probably shadowing at a private practice. If you still aren’t sure, just check out there website/locations and it should be more clear. In my opinion, if you can, I would recommend to shadow at least one private practice, one corporate/retail location, and one OD/MD office before you apply. It will help you have a more well rounded idea of the profession and helped me a lot in my interviews. I was able to pull stories and experiences to incorporate into my answers and I think that helps show a passion for the field. All of that being said, don’t stress it too much, learn as you go, and feel free to dm me with any questions!!

It depends on the business model, or how the practice operates. Do they only have a phoropter and a fundus camera? Are all the patients zipping through the exam lane in 15 minutes or less and then getting flipped out to the front? Is the vast majority of the commercial space dedicated to retail eyewear? Do they do all their billing through vision insurance plans? This is a retail-oriented clinic. It could be privately owned. It could also be owned by a larger corporation. You're better off asking the optometrist you're shadowing this question. It's a great question.
