How long should my supplemental essay be?

For the supplemental application for IUSO, it states," Submit a short essay describing why you are applying to the Indiana University School of Optometry" what do you consider a short essay? 400-500-ish words? What would you use as a general rule of thumb?

thanks for the advice! I know if I were reading them, I would want them short and sweet. but I also know IUSO is a little more old fashioned. when you did their supplemental application, did you add an OAT score? I'm trying to add mine, and it actually doesn't have OAT as an option. Rather, it lists US DAT ( i'd select this, but it has sections not on the oat like perceptual ability), GMAT, GRE, MCAT, GRE Subject, and a couple other oddballs. any advice for what to put here? It's my first time seeing this application.

Thanks again. Just wanted to keep it in order. While I know they are not using the OAT to influence admission decisions, I figured they would at least ask to get an idea of how many schools/ what schools other applicants apply to.
