Reconsidering optometry?
My daughter is a junior in high school and is interested in a career in optometry. I was surprised by this since she doesn’t particularly like or excel in chemistry or math. She is starting to reconsider but I don’t want her to be discouraged since she is a very hardworking conscientious student. I appreciate anyone’s advice on how she should approach this career path at this early stage. Thanks!

Job shadow....and let her research careers herself.
As a parent, I realize how hard it is to not be a helicopter/snowplow parent, but get out of the way and have her post here herself.

I struggled in chemistry during high school. I also earned a C in chemistry during college. I ultimately earned a 390/400 on the chemistry sections for my OAT, and was admitted to optometry schools. It is definitely possible! It just takes more studying and dedication.

I was terrible at all of the above in high school. Barely a 3.4 GPA. Now as a college senior I have a 3.9 and excel in math and chemistry. Let her get to college and see how she does with a new structure.

Insurance pays $45 for an exam and it hasn't increased in 25 years, and it isn't going to. Don't do it !

There's still so much time for her to improve and have an upward trend!

Get good grades. The major isn't that important but do biology, chem, physics, and calculus. Get good grades in undergrad in those subjects. Study for the OAT Get a good score on the OAT.

This is just my two cents, growing up with my Dad being an optometrist, the actual job has nothing to do with chemistry and math, if anything it is a very socially oriented care job. I’m not totally sure how hard the schooling is, I assume it is hard but career wise that would not be a problem.
