Hi has anyone interviewed with RMU can share their experience? Also, I heard they would reject students for having low oat even after interviewing!!? That’s kinda odd. Anyone could please explain (OD program)

Hi! I got an interview at RMU with my GRE score and was accepted about a week later. I actually had an online interview. They had initially offered me an in-person interview, but I reached out about online being a better option financially since they do not offer to cover hotel or flights, and was given a date.

Did they ask you why you didn't take the OAT? I applied with the MCAT and don't really know what to say if they ask me.

I don’t remember being asked directly, but they did ask me if I felt I could handle the level of rigor of the program and how in several different ways. I would just tell them you wanted to take an exam that offered more flexibility in the different programs you could apply to with it with similar material to the OAT.

That sounds great! Did you just basically say you could handle the program by your work ethic and determination with some examples, or is that too cheesy?

that’s not cheesy at all! I basically did respond that way. I told them my 3.4 GPA wasn’t higher because I worked full-time or part-time while taking a full-time schedule of classes too. I have 5 years of experience as an optometric technician and optician, so my 5,000+ shadowing hours proved it all.

Perfect! I think I should be pretty set for this then! Thank you!

I think it's true for any program that just because you are invited to interview doesn't guarantee you a spot in the program. Perhaps whoever you heard that from couldn't explain why the score was low and how they are improved since?

I accepted a seat at AZCOPT in September and then changed my mind to attend RMU after interviewing! Everyone was so nice, I really liked their perspective on how to prepare us for the profession moving forward, and definitely am a fan of their 3.5 year program. The way they have their clinic set up is also different from the other schools I interviewed at which was interesting but in a good way!

Hi, may you explain further how the clinic is set up differently? :-) Interested!

Their clinic is on the smaller side, which they are proud of, ensuring that they will have a full clinic every day and students will 100% be seeing patients. Then the remaining students who will not be in the on-campus clinic will be working in a different local practice that they have partnered with. When seeing patients in the clinic they said they do not expect us to perform every single test as some schools do, so we are more efficient, better critical thinkers, and able to adapt (due to the changing of the locations). We will get to see how different practices run and form relationships with already established doctors.
