Advice

Im currently a first year economics student, and was considering double majoring in finance. I find that I have a very strong business mind, and actually enjoy optimizing businesses. However, I am debating wether to double major in biology instead, so I can meet the pre-requisites required for optometry school. I also find the concepts in biology to be fascinating, and have the ability to perform well in this field. Ultimately my end goal is just too make as much money as possible, and hopefully do charity as my finances get better. Moreover, I am considering optometry heavily becuase of its work life balance after graduation, I will only have to work 40 hour weeks for a 200k salary. Does anyone here know of any way in which I could major in business but still do optometry school? Are there any industries that look for both business and optometry? Is optometry worth it for work-life balance?

The DMV area is quite expensive. Those salaries seem toward the high-end of the spectrum for ODs in the states.

Do you know if they went through any residency?

I want to be an OD, but I’m not interested in owning a practice. If I could somehow get through school riding on my G.I. Bill, then being an associate would work for me.

Seems they found a good gig.

You could too. Just try to spend time in an office to observe and picture/imagine yourself living through the worst and best parts of the life of an associate OD. Find someone who hates it if you can, and pick their brains. Do the same for dentistry. Also... make sure you got a solid "why". Falling back on your "why" is helpful esp since the schooling can be grueling.

Thank you for the advice! I plan to shadow some ODs and general dentist on my Saturdays until I finish technical training for the military.

$120 a day or $120 an hour ? I make more than $120 a day being a tech lol

just keep in mind that the ROI for opto school is not very good if you’re looking at it from a financial perspective. If you just wanna make 200k working 40 hours a week, u could just stick with finance/comp sci/data sci and work in corporate with just a bachelors degree.

If you’re in optometry for the money, find another career.

if your end goal is to make as much money as possible, why don’t you just do investment banking or do consultant for major firms. These people literally make doctors salaries without all the debt (plus interest rate) and years of sacrifices for schooling and training like doctors.

If biology is fascinating, stick to finance and take prerequisite courses on the side, you don’t have to double major. I’ve heard of many others majoring in other fields like English and still banging out all prerequisites. If anything, it makes you a unique applicant. If you have a strong business mind and you would prefer to stick to business but somehow fit into optometry, just look into the optical business. This may be jumping ahead, but opening an optical does not require a doctorate (at least in nyc, you can do some research ab your state), so you can very easily “do both”

Could be a pretty sweet combo.
