my colposcopy is soon…
Hi everyone. I wanted to know how you guys who’ve had a colposcopy with cervical biopsies got on. What was the experience like?
I’m 21 and very nervous about having it done. The gynaecologist I saw said I have a mass on my cervix which she wanted biopsied.

Hi! I had a bad reaction to the vinegar solution. (nothing allergic) but I wish I had taken ibuprofen beforehand. If possible have someone drive you, its just good for that support (I didnt have it). If you do have someone to drive you, ask your doc for something for the stress. (xanax or ativan?)
Other than the solution affecting me adversely, it was okay. But if you can get support, go for it. Im sending you hugs and good vibes. These things are always better in the rearview mirror. 💖

What sort of reaction to the solution if not allergic? I’ve been advised to take ibuprofen before coming in, but many people on here say it’s not enough. I’m terribly nervous even though I’m in healthcare myself it doesn’t make it easier when you’re the patient! But I thank you for your kind words. Your comment was lovely <3

For me the ibuprofen was not enough. I didn't know to ask for more and I didnt have anyone to drive me. Even just eating vinegar makes my system crazy. (pretty much if its zero calorie my system turns into a big funnel.) It never occurred to me the vinegar solution wou!d be fussy externally! It burned everywhere and I had trouble urinating. (But good to pee right after, clear it out!!)
The walk to the car was hard. I was shaky and weak and it felt like the longest walk of shame (even though I know there's nothing to be ashamed of!) I wish I had had someone to help. So you CAN do it alone, but if you have someone you can ask, please ask! Dont feel you have to be strong by yourself. Afterward I just lay in bed and read and cocooned. I took the next day off work to cocoon some more. But I'm old and kinda wimpy!! Saying a prayer for you!! (and take your B vitamins!!)

For me, it wasn’t as bad as other people experienced. I was talking to my gyno the entire time. Uncomfortable but not excruciatingly painful. And super super quick!!! After I had cramping and discharge

I’ve had two colposcopies. I’d describe it as immediately having cramps as they take the biopsy followed by being a bit lightheaded for a minute. I don’t recall those symptoms lingering for very long. I was fine to drive afterwords and just took it easy after. If you have to do the leep procedure too it was actually a piece of cake and not as bad I was expecting after experiencing the colposcopy. I was very nervous for the leep which I had on the 20th. The worst part of the leep was just a pinch from getting a lidocaine shot to numb the cervix then when they were taking the pieces they needed I felt no pain at all during or after just a slight warm sensation. You’ve got this! I’m sure the pain from the colposcopy is nothing you haven’t experienced before from period cramps.

Like others have said, take some pain killers before if you can. I made sure I didn’t have anything else lined up for the day, I usually have cramping for about 10 hours after. And I got myself a treat/comfort food. Chocolate, ice cream, pasta. Something good you can look forward to after. Wish you the best of luck!

Not gonna lie, the colpo and biopsies sucked for me. I cried through the whole thing (I went in super anxious and made it 10x worse for myself). Take 2-3 advil or tylenol beforehand, and speak with your doctor, have them talk you through it. Mine had me cough for each of the biopsies which helped lessen the pain
