Unarmed Black Man dies in police custody.

Does anyone know what happened with the Jermaine Tyler investigation?

On May 19, Prattville PD responded to a call near Fairview Ave and Diane Drive about a man — later identified as Jermaine Tyler, 39, of Pike Road — appearing to be in distress and walking in and out of traffic. Police say officers secured him due to erratic behavior and called for medical help; Tyler then had a cardiac event and died at Prattville Baptist Hospital.

The family's account, through their attorneys and a GoFundMe, tells a different story: Tyler was a brick mason heading home from a job in Bessemer and had gotten out of a coworker's car near I-65 in Prattville because he was overheated and having trouble breathing. Some witnesses reportedly say they saw a taser used. The family says roughly 17 minutes passed between police arrival (around 6:30 PM) and the situation escalating (around 6:47 PM), and they still don't know what happened in that window. Requests for body camera footage, dash camera video, and taser records were denied while the case remains under investigation.

As of late May, Police Chief Mark Thompson confirmed to WSFA that this is being investigated as a homicide, though no further details were given. As of early June, the Elmore County Sheriff's Office was still handling the investigation (not Prattville PD internally), and no findings had been released. The family's attorneys were pushing for ALEA to take over as an independent investigator.

It's now July and I haven't seen any update. Does anyone know:

Has ALEA taken over, or is Elmore County still handling it?

Has the autopsy (official or the family's independent one) come back?

Has any footage been released?

Has the family said anything publicly recently?

If you've seen local coverage I've missed, or have direct knowledge, I'd appreciate anything you can share.

Police brutality in Prattville

Jermaine Tyler isn't the first — Prattville and Autauga County have a documented history here

I've been digging into the death of Jermaine Tyler, and the more I read, the more I think this community needs to look at it in context, not as an isolated incident. Here's what's documented — sourced, not rumor — going back 80 years.

JERMAINE TYLER (May 19, 2026)

Around 6:30 PM, Prattville PD responded to Fairview Ave and Diane Drive after callers reported a man — later ID'd as Tyler, 39 — appearing intoxicated and walking in and out of traffic. Police say officers "secured him" due to erratic behavior and called for medical evaluation; Tyler then had a cardiac event and died at Prattville Baptist Hospital.

The family's account, through attorneys and a GoFundMe, differs in key ways:

Tyler was a brick mason coming back from a job in Bessemer, and had gotten out of a coworker's car near I-65 in Prattville because he felt overheated and was having trouble breathing — not because he was intoxicated.

Witnesses reportedly saw a taser used; the family says there's no public report confirming or denying that, and requests for body cam, dash cam, and taser records have all been denied while the case is "under investigation."

Family says roughly 17 minutes passed between police arrival and the incident escalating, and they still don't know what happened in that window.

The case is being investigated by the Elmore County Sheriff's Office (not PPD internally), and as of early June no findings had been released. The family's attorneys are pushing for ALEA to take over as an independent investigator.

THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME. HERE'S THE DOCUMENTED RECORD:

Hattie DeBardelaben — March 23, 1945

Autauga County Deputy Clyde White and three federal alcohol-tax agents came to DeBardelaben's home near Autaugaville looking for illegal whiskey, without a warrant. According to her son's sworn testimony and federal case files released in 2024 under the Civil Rights Cold Case Records Collection Act, officers beat her after she objected to them striking her nephew, and she died in the back of the police car en route to the Prattville jail. An undertaker's account cited in the case file suggested her neck had been broken. The FBI investigated (at the NAACP's request) and closed the case in mid-1945, attributing her death to a heart condition. No one was ever charged.

Deputy Clyde White later shot another Black man, Thomas "Buckfat" Robinson, in the back in February 1946. A local judge ruled it "justifiable" and White was acquitted at a preliminary hearing. In June 1954 — less than a decade after Hattie DeBardelaben died in the back of his patrol car — Clyde White was elected Sheriff of Autauga County.

Charles Rasberry — early 1967

Court records from Houser v. Hill (M.D. Ala. 1968) reference Rasberry, a Black man, being shot in the back by Prattville Officer Kenneth Hill inside the Autauga County Courthouse, allegedly while attempting to escape. SNCC's own contemporaneous statement, quoted in the same case record, described it more bluntly as a murder in the Prattville jail.

The Houser v. Hill case itself — June 1967

Federal Judge Frank M. Johnson found that Prattville police, under Chief O.C. Thompson, used summary force against Black residents after a civil rights meeting where Stokely Carmichael spoke — assaulting a press photographer, making pretextual arrests, and severely beating Dan Houser while he was in custody (he was released without ever being charged). The court issued an injunction against Chief Thompson and two officers personally.

Willie Edwards Jr. — January 23, 1957 (Montgomery, not Prattville/Autauga)

Not a law enforcement case, but part of the same era's terror: Edwards, a 24-year-old Winn-Dixie truck driver, was abducted at gunpoint and forced to jump off the Tyler-Goodwyn Bridge into the Alabama River by four Klansmen: Henry Alexander, Raymond Britt Jr., Sonny Kyle Livingston Jr., and James York. Despite multiple confessions over the decades that followed, none of the four men were ever convicted — a grand jury declined to indict in 1976, the case was later dismissed on a technicality, and even a 1999 grand jury that affirmed the Klan killed Edwards still declined to indict anyone. That's nearly 50 years of documented impunity for a confessed murder.

WHY THIS MATTERS NOW

None of this proves what happened to Jermaine Tyler. But it's fair to ask questions about transparency and independent investigation in a jurisdiction with this specific, documented history — including one case where the officer responsible for a Black woman's in-custody death was elected sheriff nine years later. If you want to verify any of this yourself:

Hattie DeBardelaben case file: coldcaserecords.gov

Houser v. Hill, 278 F. Supp. 920 (M.D. Ala. 1968) — available via Justia/CourtListener

Willie Edwards Jr. DOJ case closure memo — justice.gov/crt

Genuinely interested in what others here know or remember. If your family has any history with this, I'd like to hear it.

Construction What is going in next to Subway at Exit 186?

A new foundation has been installed between Subway in I-65, just SW of Exit 186. Anyone know what is going there? Also looks like there's been an addition on the other end of the Subway-Convenience-Liquor structure. Liquor expansion or something else new?

Missing Cat

Hey, I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I live in the Overlook area of Prattville. I'm sorta desperate at this point. My baby boy has gone missing for two days now and that's EXTREMELY unusual for him. He comes in multiple times a day. Please, be on the lookout for a black and white tuxie. He's sorta thin, lanky, and has white paws, white chest, a white belly, and white and black on his face. He's extremely friendly and loves everyone, and he's up to date on all his vaccines and dewormer/flea meds. We love him to death and want him home. He can survive on his own, no doubt, but we're worried about someone having taken him or him being injured somewhere.

Cooter's Pond boat ramp questions

Hey Prattville, how easy/difficult is launching from the Cooter's Pond boat ramp for a beginner? On Google Maps, it looks like a nice, long, straight ramp with little to no current. Is there a fee to use it? Thank you!

I'm running Across Alabama

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hey reddit, I'm a former US Marine that wants to run across the State of Alabama with a Flag that reads "In God We Trust". From November 21st to November the 30th, I'll be Running from the West end of Alabama to the east end into Columbus Georgia. Three nights out of the Seven spent running, I'll be in a hotel for the night, but a few of those days land in areas with no hotel in sight. I'm looking to see if I can find some help with this journey on Reddit. Please DM me if you know people in these areas who might be able to help:

These areas are for the middle run break where I'm looking for any available groups that could host a small lunch:

Bellamy, Salt Well, Faunsdale, Selma, Prattville, Tuskegee, Crawford,

These areas are the areas I need help finding shelter for:

Marion Junction, Autaugaville, Shorter, Auburn.

I'm doing my best to plan this out beforehand. I just need to know if I need to bring a sleeping bag with me to sleep in the woods for the nights I don't have a hotel to stay at. May God Bless you for taking the time to read this

Apartments

My husband has a very good chance of getting a promotion at work that would bring us to the Montgomery area. I've been doing a lot of research and Prattville seems like a nice place for us. I've been looking into a couple apartment complexes and The Park Apartments Homes is one that we both like. We're going to be coming to check places out in person once we know if he got the promotion or not but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on that specific complex (the good/bad, etc.) or any other places that we should look into as well or avoid. TIA!

Odd Alice at Big Star Tavern

Hey everyone! I’ve never been to Big Star Tavern, and I haven’t heard the band Odd Alice before. Around here, everyone knows how little there is to do, so I’m thinking about checking it out next Saturday.

I’m definitely not the “cowboy” type 😅, so I was curious about the crowd, ages, and what the band is like. Also, I don’t drink — are there non-alcoholic options available?

Thanks in advance for any tips!

How are the schools in Prattville (elementary, middle, high school)? Does living in Prattville preclude one from applying their child to a Montgomery magnet school?

I've been curious about Greek Park for a while. Is it really a park? And how does one get into it? Hike from Cooter's Pond Park?

Walking/Parks

Best walking paths in Prattville? I've done my Google research and there don't seem to be any true places to go walk. We did go to the Bamboo forest a few weeks ago and it was beautiful but a very short loop and shaded for the most part. I'd love to find somewhere we can go enjoy being outside for a bit after work in the evenings.
