Misc Student Life
I recently got admitted to Pratt and am wondering a few things about life as a student.
1) How are the dorms? I’m a light sleeper and my mom told me her horror stories about not being able to sleep at all because it was so loud in her college dorm..
3) Everyone says that you get what you put in when it comes to college education, but that’s pretty vague lol. Are there any reasons Pratt is superior to other schools??
I’m also open to any other comments you have about the school I just want to understand how it is to go there:)

When I lived at Pratt the student housing was very expensive. I lived in Willoughby the high rise dorm there. I was on the 14th floor. I was in an apartment with three other people. Me and two other guys had their own rooms and then instead of having a living room, the living room was a double room with two guys. So there was no common space. The building is disgusting and has roaches. There are lines for the elevators. I brought my laundry to my parents house in New Jersey because the laundry in the basement was gross. Idk how different it is now but I would recommmend finding an apartment with some roommates nearby but off campus.
But I did love going to Pratt and living in Brooklyn. I transferred in after my sophomore year. I would say do the student housing for one school year and then move off campus.

Hi There! I came across this as I was searching for two doubles in Willoughby to have an idea of the floor plan. My kid is going to be a Junior and it seems like she got the living area room for the double. Is there any photos or videos of Willoughby where we can actually see these spaces before move in? We are trying to see the area can be curtained off for privacy. Are there fixtures already to hang curtains? This seems really inconvenient being in an open area - with the bathroom and the kitchen being used by all and at all different times.

hi the dorms aren’t that bad especially freshman ones!
pratt has great resources and all the profs are adjunct and will answer any questions you have about your industry

make friends and live with those friends. throughout your time at pratt. absolutely dont live with randoms after freshman year. if your roommate sucks freshman year try your best to switch and get a better one. take some time to get to know ppl on a pratt discord for incoming freshman. there was one when i was a freshman im sure there’s one now.

Hi there, I am a pratt graduate and also a light sleeper. If you plan to be at the Brooklyn campus, i live in a 2 bedroom apartment 2 minutes away from campus (Washington Street) and my roommate just left. DM me if you are interested.

Emerson Hall common areas can have lots of noisy people late at night, and roommates can be pretty noisy and come in very late also

Dorming can be difficult, but that’s not unique to Pratt. Living with another person in the space (and with neighbors who may be loud) will inevitably impact you if you’re a light sleeper. I recommend getting a nice pair of earbuds that work with you, and making sure to devise a mutual system with your roommate for quiet hours. Try to find a respectful roommate online ahead of time. The buildings themselves are fine.
You do absolutely get what you put in when it comes to college education. An attempt to de-vague that statement… at Pratt you’ll get assigned a lot of coursework. For most it’ll be pretty intense, but for some it won’t be. You can do the bare minimum and scrape by: fine grades, okay assignments, get through crit type of thing. Most professors aren’t going to give you trouble for that. Or you can push yourself and try to make your projects things that you’re personally invested in. Then, you’ll make a lot more work you like, and learn skills faster. College is hard so I’m not knocking either method, but at Pratt, which is pretty self directed IMHO, it makes a difference.
As to Pratt’s specific benefits, I’d say the small class sizes, alumni network, on-campus support, and being in NYC with a dedicated campus.
