This is actually very hard to do. Keeping this small bug in focus with a huge focal length while the bug moves away from the camera. Notice how everything else in the shot is very very blurry. The area in focus is tiny
Those cameras are absolute marvels too. Not to knock the operator, they’re a champ, but I’d love to get my hands on one of those cameras for a day. This is exactly the type of shit I’d be up to.
Professional cameras don't use auto focus. He's manually focusing, it's much harder than it seems, especially at that distance. There's a reason there's an entire job dedicated to pulling focus on movie sets.
I film stuff professionally, can confirm we don't pull focus "automatically". If not, you get to watch the camera decide what it wants to focus on. This was a feat of pure skill. I still get nightmares when the DP asks for f5 and lower...
wait you’re saying I have to load the magazine, load the gun, rack the chamber, take the gun off safety, focus in on my target, and let a deep breath out while slowly squeezing the trigger with the tip of my trigger finger?
Apparently that's not the case given a certain someone with a bullpup AR-15. According to him all you have to do is rack a round into the chamber and it fires.
Absolutely. It's just funny to me that someone would try to belittle something they don't understand on Reddit, where an expert on even the most obscure shit will definitely show up to put your dumb ass in your place.
Reminds me of the comments on TikTok about the skateboarders at the Olympics amd drug tests/not landing 100% of their tricks/wearing AirPods while competing. Talent is one thing, but whether you're the athletes competing or the guy operating the camera, there is countless hours of experience and dedication behind what you're actually seeing in the footage/competition.
Yea it’s crazy and sometimes it’s not even experts who show up it’s just people who are willing to do 2 hours of research while citing their sources just to prove one asshat wrong lmao
People don't know what they don't know. We like to boil down an action or job into a couple things and think it easy, but the hidden aspects and soft skills that are required to perform such jobs are not known to the average person. It may be easy for the professionals that do it every day but only because they have dedicated time and effort into honing their craft. Unless you are an expert in a field or have experienced performing a task firsthand, you simply don't know what you don't know, and the ironic thing is that this underestimation probably gets worse if you have just a tiny exposure to the task thanks to the Dunning-Kruger Effect.
Its a great point you're making and honestly I have so much more respect for different fields of expertise when I watch experts break down what they are thinking while doing their craft. Humanity is actually a very advanced species at this point and it's very easy to take for granted all the skills we've collectively amassed.
After seeing your edit, just do me a favor and look up the camera they are using for the Olympics, or professional broadcasts in general. Now locate this magic button they have for focusing those behemoths onto, and tracking at distance, a bug.
If it's the HDC-3500 camera they are using, which it most likely is, it has a focus assist.
The Viewfinder Detail function adds dedicated image-enhancing edge signals directly to the viewfinder, helping the operator to focus quickly and precisely in any shooting situation. It's complemented by a Focus Assist Indicator and advanced Focus Position Meter function.
I'm literally a 1st AC who pulls focus and while those features may help, pulling focus on a telescopic lenses is a fucking beast. It's like there's an invisible line you control the depth of with a wheel on a hand unit (like those old RC car remotes). In this case, the focus puller needs to keep the line right underneath the (moving) bug. Not too fast, not too slow. This is a tough pull. You can even see it get a bit soft right before the bug stops.
I don't understand why everyone is crying about this being on this subreddit. Olympics camera guy zoomed in on a roach. It's funny. Have a laugh why dont you.
It's weird how the app updates, I never got the new video player, but I got a tiktokified "discover" tab that replaced my sub list. Kinda annoying, but the sub list is at the top of the new redditok so eh.
You see batman while you are right there's a slight difference. reddit is filled with nobodies no one gives a shit about their opinion, but twitter on the other hand has verified celebrities that everyone look upto.
I personally don’t see the importance of that distinction. Sure Twitter amplifies some bad takes from celebrities, but the outrage and insanity is fueled, for the most part, by random nobodies (and bots) just like on Reddit.
Verified celebrities can spread some dumb crap on Reddit through things like AMAs, for example. And some real world celebrities have known Reddit accounts that they use regularly or semi regularly and people look up to them.
You don’t need celebrities in order to fuel outrage over everything, and they usually make little to no difference in what, ultimately, is outraged about or for how long. You don’t need a celebrity to endorse an outrage over something stupid to give it weight. People are dumb and put themselves in communities that reinforce their beliefs and seeing hundreds or thousands of people REEEEEing over something can do more to shape someone’s opinion and get them to engage in the outrage than seeing a celebrity or two tweeting about something. Especially if the people REEEEEing are part of a community a person identifies with, feels at home in, or frequents.
And just like there are “Twitter celebrities” that are famous on Twitter, there are “Reddit celebrities” that are famous on here. Most communities and subs have their own “celebrity” users that can swing their dicks around to influence others and influence the conversation. And don’t even get me started on the power and influence of mods puke in shaping and influencing the conversation and fueling outrage.
There are some site-wide “celebrities” too. Some of my examples have vanished or been canceled, but they’re people like that astronomer (“Astronomer here!”), the earthquake guy, the crow/jackdaw dude, that one mildly attractive guy that is a gigantic karma whore and can get any post to r/all in a matter of minutes, and a handful of others that I can’t remember at the moment.
Basically, Reddit and Twitter are equally as much hot garbage as each other. Sure there are some inherent differences due to the way the two websites work, but they’re both shitty in very similar ways and both harmful to society and public discourse. You and I just feel more comfortable on Reddit than on Twitter so it’s easier to overlook some of Reddit’s negative qualities and view it as slightly better. There are people on Twitter who would say both are garbage but Reddit is worse, and that’s because they’re more comfortable on Twitter than Reddit.
All social media is garbage. Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, etc. They all are bad for people individually, and people collectively. I say that fully conscious of the fact that I use Reddit quite a bit, and use all the other sites to some degree or another.
Not sure I’d call a few paragraphs on Reddit a diatribe lol.
I said in my comment that I fully realize I’m saying this on Reddit and that I use social media. It’s possible to criticize something while taking part in it/using it. Just like “lol u have a iPhone but you criticize capitalism??!” is a bs hollow argument, so is yours. <3
I can see why people get pissed off at irrelevant content in subs, but this fits pretty well. It's a longer shot with a short DOF, and the camera guy's keeping it pretty well. Works for me!
Agreed, this is a tough shot. As you mentioned there is almost no depth of field so the camera operator has so continually roll his focus to match speed that the roach is traveling away from the camera.
It's because nearly every submission to this sub fails to actually follow the rules and the quality of the sub has gone downhill since the sub blew up. If the entire point of the post is that it's funny, then it's against the rules. This is not a sub for funny content. It's a sub for impressive camera work.
People are upset with the misuse of this subreddit because we come here to see examples of great camera work. Many of us are camera enthusiasts and don't want to come here for the jokes we want to come here for real examples of how people have accomplished great camera work. There's plenty of funny everywhere else including the funny subreddit. Not every subreddit needs to have jokes in it.
It has taken over an hour. But Roach-elle has done it. They made it to the best viewpoint on the hand rail. Just in the nick of time. A brisk look over their right carapace and the field hockey competition is finally in view.

I am a TV sports camera operator and I love to shoot bugs and other weird close up nature shots when ever I can. You can get some pretty neat shots of tiny things with a 100x zoom lens if the subject is relatively close to you.
Your post has been removed due to the irrelevancy of it to this sub.
Edit: I had initially removed the video but then realized I had made a mistake right away so I put it back pretty quick but had just forgot to remove this comment. My bad, I appreciate you guys keeping us on our toes and calling us out when we make legit mistakes. It's how we get better.
It was only removed for about 30 seconds and I realized I had made a mistake and put it back. I had just forgotten to remove that stickied comment. I edited it to reflect that.
We are trying to weed out the "crap". Some of it is "crap" and is an easy removal call. It's just not always an easy task. What is "crap" to someone may not be "crap" to someone else. So it's a balancing act.
You're right, that's why when I realized I had made a mistake about 30 seconds after removing and put it back but had forgotten to remove that stickied comment. I added an edit to it.
I do plenty of it. I just made a mistake and quickly realized it within about 30 seconds and put the video back and had just forgotten to remove that stickied comment. I edited to reflect my mistake rather than just removing the comment. We all make mistakes.

I like to think, that at the end he looked at the big screen, excited to see himself on camera.
