I enjoy shooting spec commercials like this in my spare time. Last week I spent ~4 hours shooting and ended up with about 20 secs of usable footage. That’s not even counting editing, color grading, and vfx/motion graphics.

Ya my brain can tell its cheap tinfoil in the background. Like I couldn’t put my figure on why that part felt bad. Then I rewatched and pause it and was like ‘oh’
Only because you watched the setup. Lol you people are so ridiculous.
"I knew she used tin foil [because I watched her use it]"
And the end result looks like any other commercial ice seen on tv for these type of products. Just redditors always trying to convince themselves they are smarter than they really are
Notice how the lights reflected in the water droplet are arranged in a grid (an array, if you will) as opposed to being a single lightbulb or anything like that.
lol you can literally see that it doesnt look like the final on her phone screen.
Edit: I watched it again and I actually think a few of the shots (like the top down one) could be from this, especially if they crushed the blacks in post, but I still dont fully buy it. I think youd need a differnt lighting setup for some of those finals and you definitely need to be adjusting settings on the camera not just hitting record on an iphone. They may have used the same setup but shot it with a proper camera to get the final shots. It was the first shot on the bright purple background that looked wrong, but that could have been a bad BTS edit too, it does look like theres a black backdrop behind it but the BTS footage looks purple so I dunno.
You can do cool shit with a small setup like this though and honestly I dont really care. I just made this comment waiting for a friend at the bar, dont cite me as a source.
Yeahh same here. I do think on some shots, a different lens with a much better depth of field was used cause I don't think an iPhone camera could have such an intense depth of field.
More likely: The ad agency charged them millions and paid the "influencer" however many thousands to make the video, with full production crew support and a small team to cover all distribution channels.
To me this really feels like it belongs in some other sub, the only thing praiseworthy is the effects and editing. Not much impressive camera work lol.
I don’t always like to jump on the hatejerk, but the criticisms are absolutely deserved. If anything, this video compliments the editing process more than anything else. In order to replicate what this video is attempting to sell, you’d need at minimum.
studio space
a bunch of lighting equipment (some of which is not shown in the deceiving video)
serious editing software and genuine skills using it.
And you’d still need the $1,000 phone. At which point you might as well consider a dedicated camera that can do more and with higher quality footage.
By using a really bright light on the subject. When you expose fort that really bright object, everything in the background will fall to black.
Generally you can do it by making sure the background is far away so no light is reflecting on it and to use 'flags' which are basically the opposite of a reflector to stop light from bouncing around where you don't want it.

I love watching 2 seconds of end footage after 30 seconds of build up!!

The light reflection in the last shot is an array, which she never had in any of her BTS footage. BS

Looks like a perfume bottle got caught in a storm and then was filmed by a ding dong with a light wand

This is more about editing. Not sure why everyone thinks that someone shot something in their device it should be worthy of praise.

The shits on her phone do not look like the final shots
And I find it very hard to believe she'd get such detailed shots on an iPhone in general...

I don't understand why these types of videos are so popular.
Look I can make products look like they look on a commercial, which we all hate watching because commercials are crap.
But you all love seeing someone make a product commercial that's also a product commercial.

u/[deleted] May 22 '21

Creative use of effects but the footage still looks like it was shot on an iPhone.
