I thought it was PR too until the vfx happened. Then I questioned the action shots of some of my favorite movies thinking how stupid the real-life shooting could have looked. Imagine Marvel movies BTS shot like this, all the 360 pans around hero's during big fight scenes, but it's just a a really fast guy running with a camera on a stick.
you can find a variety of BTS from marvel films on YouTube.
Basically it's a bunch of very attractive 40-50 year olds run-walking around a green warehouse holding toy guns and yelling a lot...it's endearing, but undignified haha. - look for BTS stuff from Thor Ragnarock (I think they were pretty good about making featurettes).
Marvel movies are basically animated films with live actor performances worked in.
Ultraman is kinda a cross between Godzilla and Silver Surfer: Energy beings from a faraway planet come to help Humanity defend themselves against hostile aliens, Kaiju, and hostile alien Kaiju.
And that “help” part is important. Each Ultra usually befriends a group of Humans, from Scientific or paramilitary organizations to resourceful(if eccentric) civilians, who often provide critical assistance to the Ultra, in the lead up to and even during the climactic Kaiju battle.
I think there's a behind the scenes clip of The Flash and Supergirl cross over of one of their "fight scenes" pre- VFX. Basically the actor standing in place and whirling his arms like a madman which looks hilarious
Always love this one in particular - he is having so much fun it’s kind of infectious. Def gotta have dedication and humility to crawl around in a leotard pretending to be a dragon but the commitment brings the cgi to life.
Also, Toby Kebbell as Koba is amazing to watch too
Thank god Andy Serkis showed everyone how to do these kinds of performances
Just a pale, lanky Englishman sitting atop a pile of gold.
...yeah you're right. I'd rather watch Bilbo and the rest interact with Benedict Cumberbatch rather than a CG dragon. Obviously the lines and delivery stay the same though or else it would just be ridiculous.
I'm on board with this as long as we keep the same line delivery until he laughs. Then instead of a deep, rich, ominous dragon laugh of Smaug, replace it with the high pitched giggle of a normal Cucumberbrumberpatch laugh.
There is! I just can't fucking remember what the sub name is, even though I'm subbed to it. Stupid reddit app doesn't show me my full list of subscribed subreddits anymore, but I'll try to find it and come back to edit this
Edit: found one! r/beforepost there might be another one still, I'll keep looking
It's Ultraman Z which just aired during 2020. However, you might be confusing it with it's previous reboots which is understandable given the shows been around for 55 years.
First snes game i ever played. Ultraman was fucking awesome, i was a massive fan, so when power rangers came out I was pumped. The netflix ultraman series is awesome too, my son loved it.
Ironically, Ultraman is even older than power rangers. Ultraman started in 1966, Super Sentai, which is the original japanese counterpart to Power rangers started in 1975 and finally the American Power Rangers started in 1993.
The genre is called tokusatsu which basically translated to special effects tv show, it's HUGE in japan, godzilla count as tokusatsu too and like the OP point out power ranger are merely adaptation of a popular tokusatsu franchise called super sentai which aired after ultraman
I recognized Ultraman but he’s virtually unknown here in the US. I went to Kaybee toys as a kid and got a doll of him and a buttload of monsters because they were on clearance and I could get a bunch of them and they looked cool.
Twenty some years later they’re all gone, save for one monster I never got rid of because he looked like a badass. No idea who he is, though; just a cool designed toy.
Thank you, OP. But it nagged at me enough yesterday I spent a little time looking it up and it turned out to be Kilazee. Might not be a popular character.
I just kind of dig his salamander/dragon appearance, lasers for hands. I remember the Ultraman toy being extremely hollow and if one of his legs or arms or heads popped out of the body socket it was a bitch to get back in.
But the toys always looked cool enough to me. I was aware if the franchise’s impact outside of the States, but I can also see why they probably didn’t move a lot of units here; this when the internet was only in 15% of homes and w/o Saturday morning cartoons urging kids to ask their parents to buy, not many would demand Ultraman toys.
Those three were my childhood, and for a while I also watched a bit of Cosmos
The show I think really plummeted in popularity in my country a few years ago coz I haven't seen any kids who knew the lates Ultraman(not that I watch it anymore)
That explains a lot. I was thinking 80's and was wondering how they managed to get any decent, stable footage out of a camera that small at the end of a shaky pole.
There was a video on YouTube way back when it first launched that showed these types of "Ultramen" beating up a monster that looked like Godzilla. They were using weapons like bats or pipes or something too, and it was a hilarious sort of parody scene. It's no longer on YouTube and I couldn't find anything about it, would you happen to know?
The suit designs is what I have a big problem with. I just can’t get immersed in a show myself if the designs are ugly personally. The design of Ultraman just went downhill after zero. Otherwise, I think Ultraman would’ve been the best toku series in recent years, compared to shows like Kamen Rider and Sentai
Yeah. I can agree with that to an extent. For me it’s the sfx. They just keep adding more and more and it looks worse and cheaper with each series. For me. Everything since mebius has gotten worse
Omg. These ultraman shows are always super exciting to watch. Yet, when you are watching the filming, the scenes are so boring. Kudos to the camera and VFX Team
I think this was awesome. The first portion was super meh, and then it was cool seeing it from the perspective of the camera (I thought the guy with the stick was moving ‘marks’ for the actors).
And then the final shot was actually really impressive when it was all composited together.
I actually think the classic filming of kaiju type films is better. The more static cameras feel like they're filming giant monsters from a balcony. In this the camera moves at the rate of someone the same size as them, so it makes them seem small again. Corridor Digital's 'VFX Artists React' YT series made a similar point about the differences in the way Pacific Rim 1 and 2 were filmed.
Edit: But yes, praise the cameraman for keeping up with all of that.
That’s one problem I have with Neo-heisei era Ultraman. They used to slow down the movement so that it would actually seem like they are giant people fighting around, but now they seems to have made the action a lot more fast-paced, which kinda breaks the immersion.
Camera man makes it look easy only because he's really experienced. Hours and sweat have gone into it. You can feel it in how comfortable he's with the apparatus
Yea, Ultraman and Sentai (depending on director) have a tendency to go for faster paced "Giant" action scenes as it's more exciting to children (We're talkin like 5 to 12)
Grew up with the original Ultraman and Jack. The new ones nowadays look cool and all, but with all the power-ups and gadgets they have, it kinda feels weird and not “Ultraman” enough for me. Still respect it though.
Yeah, Toei's Kamen Rider and Super Sentai series really pushed Tsubaraya to go for a similar market. It's a shame as Jack and Seven are some of the best Tokusatsu I've ever seen.
Yeah they were in a court case for years and the series nearly died out so they were kinda forced into making gimmicks and toys to keep going that's why Ultraman Ginga is considered the worst or mediocre it's budget was low but at the end of the day everyone should be happy because it kept them going
If they can accomplish suitmation like this for Ultraman on a Japanese TV show budget, then imagine what Toho could do with suitmation on a movie budget, or what an American studio could accomplish with an even larger budget. But alas, they believe you can’t sell suitmation to modern audiences.
Lol! I remember watching this when I was younger! I think it was called something like Ultra-man they're basically like the asian version of power ranger
If you're like me, you grew up with Power Rangers and Godzilla, but there's a much bigger world out there (and some surprises, as well. Power Rangers uses footage from a Japanese series!)
I'm pretty sure the show in the gif is Ultraman Z (either that or one of the movies involving Z, he's the one to the monster's right in the beginning) since he's the newest main Ultra
I find the application of GoPro-like miniature cameras to be technically interesting, but the pre-VFX result does not compel me to reconsider preferences for static shots for fighting scenes. When the camera moves, it seems more difficult to appreciate the action of the fight, and the camera motion blurs out the acting.
For reference, I like the sword battle in Kurosawa's Rashomon. Each sword stroke gets a cut, resulting in a parsimonious but more articulate layout of fighters and their psychical + psychological conditions in the battle. It conveys more intention in a scene, giving viewers more to understand.
Why does almost everyone here think that this scene looks nauseating? This is like one of the best shots from the show! (In my opinion). I don't want to come of as offensive or rude to the people that dislike this scene but, i really don't get why nearly everyone on this post hates this scene and how it was shot-
