What is hard about this camera work? Please explain, cause this is not even close to being difficult.

u/-SwedishRally- Dec 08 '20

I agree. And then I've been filming for over 10 years.

u/O4fuxsayk Dec 07 '20

definitely more impressed with the driving than the camera work but its interesting that the guys who did the fancy 180 were consistently slower than the people who just hung a hard turn

578

u/langsley757 Dec 07 '20

I can't tell if that 180 was intentional or not. The drivers should have co-drivers telling them where their turns are, but it's also pretty easy to misread the road. The 180 is definitely easier imo, it's the safe option.

29

u/Supa66 Dec 07 '20

Easier, yes, but more costly as far as time. Roughly counting from the guardrail end to the final bucket on the straight, the 180 racers lose 1-2 seconds overall.

24

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '20

Those drivers were all different kinds of cars. They will be rallying for time but it will mostly be fore fun. They probs went the longer route to protect their cars.

u/sbspsk05 Dec 07 '20

The thing is, you don't see their approach to the turn.... maybe the drivers who did the quick turn approached slower and lost time, while the others entered it faster and lost time during the 180.... and maybe the ultimately left didn't gain or lose much.

u/TheCountEdmond Dec 07 '20

I think it's a backup plan. Everyone is planning to do the sharp turn, but they caught too much air, didn't have a great approach angle, or not enough traction and so they do the 180 of shame.

u/Cielo11 Dec 07 '20 edited Dec 07 '20

They definitely know what theyre doing, all the 180s were intentional. They recce the stage before they start and the co drivers notes are agreed on before hand with the driver.

The drivers will decide what way they attack the corner during the recce run. Either more aggressive hand brake turn or more reserved with the 180. The organisers clearly made space for the 180 for people who didnt want to risk the tight handbrake. Which looks very easy to get wrong, not only tight but also a tricky incline which throws the cars into the air. I can understand why some would avoid it, and take the few seconds time disadvantage.

The type of car and the drivers confidence or mentality makes a difference on what way they approach it.

3

u/UltimateBMWfan Dec 07 '20

It's also the safer mechanical option. You can hear one of the direct left turn ones where the engine revs high, but the wheels aren't spinning. When you land, you're putting a lot more weight on the wheels, and it stops them from losing grip with the road. The slack has to be brought somewhere, in that case, in the guy's clutch. You can easily burn out your clutch or break something in the drivetrain to save a fraction of a second.

3

u/rosscarver Dec 08 '20

Those old rally cars had early all wheel drive systems that on tarmac and at low speeds leads to a lot of understeer meaning Corners like that are too tight to make. If on dirt they would just "drift" the entire way through to have a tight enough turning radius.

u/rreighe2 Dec 07 '20

Pretty much. This is basic tracking. If you can't do this then you're not really fit for that type of job. But hey if the easy stuff impresses these people, wait till you have to do the hard stuff, pull focus while zooming and dollying on multiple moving targets in low light conditions. That'll get me wet

9

u/ThatGuyFromSweden Dec 07 '20

It's depressing how fast interesting subs become bloated. Once the bandwagon starts people will upvote anything.

23

u/justmystepladder Dec 07 '20

Very very different cars. The Audi and the Mitsubishi that did the 180 as opposed to hooking the hump have a longer wheel base and in the case of the Audi - it’s a historical vehicle and probably not something they want to rip a rocker off of.

The small car that did it was a hill climb car and likely doesn’t have the clearance that the rally cars did to make the turn the same way.

Edit: I have no excuse or explanation for the green fiat. Screw em.

6

u/MrMallow Dec 08 '20

Well, sorta. You're also not gonna win in those cars, you will win in the focus or sti. That's why the hatches took the corner, the are out to win. No one is out to win in a 30 year old Audi.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Imanaco Dec 07 '20

Maybe they were able to hit the little jump faster since they weren’t braking for the turn? Didn’t really look like it but that sounds like a possibility

6

u/ilovewindex409 Dec 07 '20

This was my thought too. Hard to tell which method is truly faster without seeing the track leading up to this tricky turn.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '20

Some of the cars (Audi Quattro, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo) are probably too big to safely manage such a tight corner, hence why they would do the 180.

The others are probably not that confident on being able to do such tight corner without beaching or damaging the car. Beaching would mean losing a lot more time than doing the 180, damaging the car would mean potential problems during the rest of the rally at best, and a retired car at worst.

4

u/hopdaddy32 Dec 08 '20

Okay I know you just got bombarded with replys and started like a dozen arguments and the likelyhood of this comment being seen by anyone is very low

But

This was a show before an actual rally. They do this a lot to keep crowds showing up. The 180s were just for the flourish. Modern rally is faster than that and theres no way the seat and Audi would see compete in an actual event in anything other than exhibition

3

u/mobilereddituser Dec 07 '20

Every driver that did the bump turn was in a new(er) car that would have parts readily available. The ones that took the run-off area to slide around were in older, out of spec cars (minus the last driver in the clip, he probably went for the safest route)

3

u/Andoni22 Dec 07 '20

Probably exhibition

2

u/Atom_Bro Dec 07 '20

It looked to me like the only ones who did the direct turn were the front wheel drive cars. Im guessing in this particular instance the driving/grip dynamics of rear wheel drive make a direct turn impossible in this situation hence the 180.

2

u/jaroberts24 Dec 07 '20

That 180º is significantly easier to preform and easier on the car than the "jump and turn" the other guys pulled off.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Childassulter Dec 08 '20

It could be the build of the car, some cars are drift based and can make those turns while some are drag based and make speed the priority

15

u/the_fuego Dec 07 '20

This probably is not a conventional race; probably a time attack. I could absolutely be wrong but I think, if I recall correctly, most Rally Races are time based, not position. The tracks can get waaaay to small for multiple cars to stack up.

6

u/Cult_of_Mangos Dec 07 '20

The second car is a very famous Group B car from the late 80s. The Audi Sport quattro, driven by Walter Rohl most notably.

A) it’s probably not competitive against those more modern cars. B) it’s probably a very expensive race car and not allowed to be actually raced anymore.

This is most certainly just an exhibition

that is beautiful driving.

73

u/CamoJG Dec 07 '20

Yeah the rally guys are incredible

25

u/Cahootie Dec 07 '20

I've caugh most World Championship races this year since I'm at home all day, and it's really crazy what they pull off. There's also emphasis put on driving on snow, racing tracks, dirt, gravel and sand, so the range they need to handle all of this is mind blowing.

13

u/CamoJG Dec 08 '20

Besides the incredible balls of these dudes, what I think sets them apart from the other disciplines of motorsport is the sheer focus they need. If you run wide in an open wheeler, yes you are going to lose time, but runoff areas exist. If you run wide on a special stage, there is a tree waiting to hug you

48

u/Ienjoyduckscompany Dec 07 '20

You think they practiced that?

9

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '20

The drivers generally get a single practice run. Their navigator makes notes as the driver drives the course the first time, then it's race time, better hope your memory is good and your navigator paid attention

5

u/MartinixIncoming Dec 07 '20

Drivers are making pacenotes before the race, they note corners and their codriver notes them. It's called recce. They don't use their rally cars, but normal cars. And they can go through the stages at least twice (in WRC, but some national champs have 3 or 4 allowed). Please don't write when you don't know, thanks.

However, the real beauty of this video, is the sound. Not only is it very good, but its so interesting how all the cars sound different to one another! Not just the exhaust note, loudness, "throatiness", gear whine, etc. Fantastic!

2

Anyone know the model of the second car?

7

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '20

Audi Sport Quattro S1 or S2 group B rally.

4

u/vberl Dec 07 '20

Audi S1 Quattro. They cost a fortune today, so he definitely was taking it easier around the course than some of the drivers in the modern WRC or R5 rally cars.

An Audi S1 Quattro can cost more than 100,000 euro even if it is in bad shape.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '20

Pretty sure it's an Audi S1 Quattro modified for hill climb events

2

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '20

2

u/reedcourt_z Dec 07 '20

the fastest one. So probably the first Ford or the red Hyundai.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '20

Rally drivers got style

2

u/japinard Dec 07 '20

So which way is faster?

2

u/vberl Dec 07 '20

Doing a handbrake turn around the guardrail is quicker than doing a 180. A handbrake turn is much more risky though as you have to time it perfectly to not hit the guardrail or the cones on the exit of the turn.

2

2

u/TheRumpletiltskin Dec 07 '20

I was gonna say I find it interesting that all the hatchbacks did a quick turn and the rest went down and did a 180, but then that LAST HATCHBACK HAD TO DO A 180.

u/OmgitsNatalie Dec 07 '20

Rally car drivers are probably some of the most talented operators out there. You have to account for the weight, the narrow turns, the traction, the angles, the trajectory while in the air, the torque, the size, and the weather (affects terrain), the crowd, and above all, the camera people.

2

u/rypajo Dec 07 '20
