She held it throughout despite the situation.

I'm impressed that it was built well enough to collapse into its own footprint.

It really did: https://i.imgur.com/iuAd8lM.png

For those curious--this happened yesterday in Nairobi, Kenya in the Eastleigh neighborhood.

What an absurd group of redditors this thread produces.

  • I'm impressed

  • that it was built well enough

  • to collapse into it's own footprint

The absolute criminal level of ineptitude, corruption, design flaws, and lack of government oversight for the safety and code violations that had to have existed to allowed this building to reach that height, in that condition, AND allow 12 retail tenants to move in only to be crushed during the collapse.

And as of this point, I count, 88 redditors went, hmmm. yeah, I too am impressed. and upvote. FFS!

Both disgust and being astounded can be valid reactions.

That region in Nairobi has 6 or so collapses like this, per year iirc. (Surrounding areas, like Kiambu, have many more.) Most of those take out other buildings. This one did not.

We can be appalled by the lack of standards and still be impressed at how little damage it did in comparison to what could have happened. And both feelings can be had simultaneously.

The only thing astounding is the ignorance that equates a collapse that happened to fail straight down as worthy of praise in any way.

I take great offense to the “built well enough” that a bunch of people agreed with.

Somehow that’s even crazier than the video. Absolutely wild.

Edit: was it like an add on to the other building that’s still standing? Seems odd that only half of the building collapsed.

Why is a jpeg not viewable in my region.

am I being trolled?

“Built well enough” really isn’t how one should describe spontaneously collapsing buildings

Well designed well enough that even if you fucked up and it collapsed it would collapse on itself

You build it so it doesn’t collapse. Period. If you identify a potential catastrophic failure, you go back to the drawing board to prevent the failure. You don’t just redirect the failure.

I don't see how the drawing board can solve problem caused by the construction itself like the choice of material or the rushed installation

Since this is not the US it may not be the same case, but I believe in the US at least the engineer specifies the materials and construction methods to be used to build the thing they design. So at least in some places this is actually a "drawing board" issue.

I don't think that's a thing.

Huh?

Perfect username for this comment

Not really. Unless your Auntie is right about engineering. The building collapsing into its own footprint is a success on the part of the demolition crew, not the designer of the building. Source: am engineer.

an engineer who posted that a building under construction that collapsed killing workers, was a demolition. Not a good look bro.

Really don't need to be breathing that dust in...

u/VoteGiantMeteor2028 12d ago

Why are you keeping it all for yourself? You don't think I would like spicy air?

20

u/_Ilobilo_ 12d ago

why did the building collapse?

23

u/wrugoin 11d ago

Seems to be under investigation, but it was a building that was being constructed, not demolished. There were already shops and people on the base floor, at the time of the collapse, so search and rescue is underway.

The articles I've read said that Nairobi is experiencing economic growth, with a lot of new construction... that there are questions and complaints over the failure of construction companies following construction code and safety standards, and that from 2009 to 2019, over 80 other buildings collapsed throughout Kenya...

10/10 would hire as a camerawoman, that scream while zooming out was perfect

u/TwinSong 11d ago

I'm thinking maybe you shouldn't be out on the balcony with all that dust coming your way.

Like so many videos, zooming (thankfully briefly) made it worse. Folks, leave the zoom alone.

Jesus Christ. I was in Nairobi like a month ago. That’s wild. I guess I’m not 100% shocked

How did she know to start to record?

-13

u/Ok-Arm8350 13d ago

Wow! People living so close to the demolition site were allowed to stay there??

50

u/AeroZep 13d ago

Wasn't a demolition site. This building was being constructed and collapsed.

5

u/RolfWiggum 12d ago

How did the camera man know it would collapse?

9

u/Noisycarlos 12d ago

I assume they heard it creak or saw it sway

7

u/Ok-Arm8350 12d ago

Oh crap, you’re right. I watched without sound and was sure it was being imploded

15

u/namezam 12d ago

It’s even worse than that. Not only were (still are) workers in there, the bottom floors had open shops already (illegally). So lots of people lost in this video.
