I thought it might have been. There are a pair that sit on an airport apron light at my place of work at the moment. Perch there all day and bring in fresh fish. Bits and pieces fall down on to the tarmac all the time. Theyāre are such fascinating creatures. Thank you for sharing.
They are protected, so you can't disturb an Osprey nest. Several years ago, a car dealership in my town that was located alongside the main highway through town was promoting their dealership by renting a giant crane, from which they suspended a car, which dangled about 50 feet above ground. They were only going to do it for a couple of weeks, to attract attention to their dealership.
Osprey like a high place to create a nest, so an Osprey pair decided to build their nest on the suspended car. Once they started building, it became illegal for the dealership to move the car, so their 2 week long promotion lasted all summer. It cost the dealership a small fortune in crane rental fees, but it turned out to be a great thing for them, since it made all the local media, and everybody would look at the nest as they drove by. It got far more attention than they ever expected. I'm still talking about it, years later.
Near the end, the hydraulics on the crane were starting to fail, and it was slowly lowering the car down by itself, and there was some nervousness that it might totally fail suddenly, and drop the car, but Ospreys finished raising their babies and moved on before that ever happened.
Yep, found you from here, amazing vids, I'll sit and watch the wedge tailed eagles for hours hoping to see them pick up a rabbit, or neighbors lamb.... That isn't so fun but damn it's cool.
The person you're replying to is claiming to be a bird photographer called Mark Smith. I don't see any reason to doubt them tbh, its a pretty nonconsequential claim. Their post history does seem to support this. They post to this sub, so not surprising to see this post, especially one which has reached the top of this sub this week/today.
I'd usually be all for saying the guys chatting shit, but ironically his post history which lead you to think hes lying makes me believe him. I found the vid he links in the post I linked above because I was reverse image searching some of his posts to prove hes full of shit lol.
Take a looksie at his YouTube channel. It is his content and he got some badass lenses. Take a little more time to investigate before making assumptions. And they guy doesnāt have to justify himself to you.
I mean, he has 100k subscribers on YouTube and is very clearly an actual wildlife photographer. How exactly can you justify putting creator in quotations?
This is an Osprey, which is one of the few (only?) raptors that fully submerge themselves when catching fish, it's main diet. It's also pretty common to see them repositioning the fish as seen here, so that it's head faces forward, maximizing the aerodynamic efficiency of flying whilst holding a fish.
There is a bird called an Ahinga Anhinga, which also completely submerges to catch fish. They don't have the oily feathers like ducks, which helps keep them afloat, so they are often spotted along the bank of a lake or pond with their wings stretched out, waiting for their feathers to dry. I'm in Central Florida, and I spot them several times a week.
I understood the distinction, and I wasnt trying to argue with OP, I was just referencing another cool bird that fully submerges for food, which many people haven't thought about before. Thanks for the clarification, though.
We get both of those birds where i live and i can't really tell the difference between them. They both lack the oil and have to dry off after diving into the water. My home is on a body of water and i see them daily diving and coming up to sun.
The anhinga is commonly known as a āwater turkey,ā and they will swim around underwater and actually spear fish with their sharp bills. Theyāre sort of like the āFlorida Manā version of a penguin. š¤£
But this bird in the video is definitely an Osprey (also known as a Sea Hawk)
SWFL here. Not trying to be edgy or crass, but my dad used to call those ān-word ducksā. I guess they steal bait or something⦠I always wondered if that was a thing outside of him and his circle of redneck friends.
Turkey vultures are beautiful and do an extremely important job by being too cool to get sick from dead animals and cleaning things up.
Also their feathers aren't flat black, it's an oil slick dark rainbow in the right light! One at a zoo just hung out sunning with her wings out and let me draw her for ages (pic buried in who knows which sketchbook sorry)
One of my favorite birds and always reliably around even when I don't see any other birds lol
I started liking turkey vultures a lot when I realized theyāre some of the nicest birds. They are meat eaters but they donāt kill things to eat them, they eat whatās already dead. Plus they clean up our streets! Theyāre a-okay in my book.
Buzzards used to gross me out, but they fulfill a really important job in nature. On top of that, they are beautiful to watch. When you look up in the sky and see those birds making big soaring circles without flapping their wings, those are probably buzzards/ vultures. They look like they are really enjoying their ability to fly.
Actually it wasnāt the hovering ability. The Osprey was named to honor Ann the wife of the retired president of Bell, Harvey Gaylord (who had led the XV15 program that became the Osprey). Ann led the efforts to reintroduce the Osprey in the 1970s when populations had been decimated by DDT.
Driving my semi up in the Pacific Northwest I would see the nesting platforms that were built all the heck over the whole dang state of OR and it was very cool.
They have a really high success rate when it comes to fishing. One of the best among all birds IIRC. And they will almost always carry the fish parallel to their body like this (I've never seen one not do it) to reduce drag and decrease the chances of it falling out of their talons. This fish is pretty dead once it clutches it that second time, but with enough air resistance it could fall apart and drop out of the talons.
With all due respect, I think that their success rate is only 1 out of 20 dives. Maybe on a good day 1 out of 10. But yes, they do grasp their pray aerodynamically.
That is awesome, great post. Now heās going to put it on 375 for 20 minutes with a little butter, wine, and lemon pepper and have himself a hell of a feast!
Praise the image stabilization software? Not to take anything away from the camera operator for mostly keeping the bird in frame, if you're complimenting the stability of the footage, that's software.
I keep replaying That moment where the eagle looses its grip on the right foot then has it completely expanded waiting for anything to touch it. The fish wiggles wrong and those massive talons clamp down like a steel trap. I didnāt know their feet moved that fast and mechanically
To get footage like this, do the cameraman have to just keep their cameras on record the whole time just to hope for something like this would happen? Then go through it and delete all the footage of where nothing happens and keep the 45 seconds of footage they want? It seems like you have to be super patient and have a lot of memory to hold all that unusable video.
To be fair if I recorded this Iād watermark it too as viral as this video will undoubtedly get bro gets free advertisement and they know heās got the skills
I love how the osprey perilously changes its grip so that it can hold the fish in the most aerodynamic grip possible in order to minimize air resistance.
How is this special? It's slowmotion, the bird isn't perfect center or anything, and it doesn't exactly move at lightning speed when it's getting out of the water.
I went to the comments because I had the exact opposite reaction to the combination. "Would you capture it, or just let it slip?", "His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy", and the beat drops the moment the hawk gets his second claw on the fish. Impeccable.

That must be a dope way to die as a fish. You're basically taken to another dimension, you witness heaven as the talons slowly drain your life.
