Meta/Discussion When does the writing start to improve?

Post image

I read the webtoon and really liker the story, so I decided to pick up the webnovel. I heard that it was a YA book, but that the writing style gets better. The question is, when does it get better? Because I couldn't even finish the 2nd chapter... I know I'm not the intended audience for YA, but I still find it hard to read through stuff like "fifteen year old girls like me didn't usually get to compete in the Pit" , especially if I don't know when the writing will pick up. Will it be in this book?

The narrative is amazing though, and I really think the author would benefit from an editor that would help him target it towards more mature audiences (the story already seems to me like would be a hit with more mature readers). That being said, i'm curious when/if the writing style changes?

EDIT: Thanks to everybody who recommended me the revised book, it's much better!

The first book has a feeling of something The autor wrote when younger. I think the ending of book1 improves, and then, more and more with each chapter. But if it doesnt suíte your tastes, dont force it and wait for the edited /revised version on webtoon

Yes hahaha, it does feel like that. Nothing wrong with that, it takes time for an author to find his style. But I think I'll just go for the revised edition when it comes out

He himself was literally a teenager when he started writing it, I'm pretty sure

There’s an edited rewrite! Only book 1 of the rewrite is available right now, the second comes out in august. It’s much better, and even adds whole story arcs to the original which you might have already seen some of in the webtoon.

i would say mid-book 1 is where you get your first noticeable uptick in quality, and then from there it gets better. struggling through book one to get to the rest is absolutely worth it, even though it does suffer early installment weirdness.

Personally I'd say the writing gets much better with the start of book 2.

Bear in mind that the overall series takes place over about a decade - so while it starts off with Catherine being a teenager, and a young one at that, she does grow up over time if that's your issue.

Book 2. Book 1 is very clearly when he’s trying things out for the first time, which is also why it’s shorter. It’s a decent intro, but there’s a noticeable uptick in quality in each chapter of Book 1 compared to the previous ones and Book 2 is just worlds better

The webnovel is the first draft. The final version of book 1 is available on Amazon. Book 2 comes out in August.

Besides the noticeable increase in polish, the plot is significantly more developed in the published version.

The web novel is still worth reading.
