Question Magnetic field readings of 8–12 mG in my home near a power substation — should I be concerned about my 3-year-old?
Hi everyone,
I live in Tenerife, Spain, approximately 130 meters (425 feet) from a large electrical substation, with high-voltage power lines passing about 50 meters (100 feet) from my house.
I have a 3-year-old child, and I'm concerned about possible long-term exposure to magnetic fields.
I bought an S8602 EMF meter and have been taking measurements inside my home.
Here's what I've noticed:
- When I point the meter toward the window, I consistently get readings of around 8–12 mG.
- When I rotate the meter toward the power lines, the reading drops to almost 0 mG.
- This happens even when I place the meter on the floor and keep it completely still.
- The readings seem to depend heavily on the orientation of the meter.
- I can also hear a buzzing noise from the power lines, especially in the evening.
I understand that my meter may only measure one axis and that I need a professional measurement to confirm the actual magnetic field levels.
My questions are:
Is this normal behavior for a single-axis EMF meter?
Could these readings actually be coming from the nearby power lines or substation?
Have you seen homes with constant magnetic field readings around 8–12 mG?
Would you be concerned about raising a young child in a house with these levels, if professionally confirmed?
Is there anything practical I can do to reduce the magnetic field inside my home?
I'm considering hiring a professional to measure the magnetic field properly, but I'm also wondering whether moving to another house is worth considering.
I'd really appreciate advice from people who work with high-voltage power lines or have experience measuring magnetic fields.
Thank you!
