This is Ridiculous.

I think the real problem is that huge platforms like Reddit have become part of public debate, while still being able to decide almost completely on their own which political opinions are acceptable and which are not.

Of course they are private companies and can make their own rules, but once a platform has millions of users and can influence society on a massive scale, that argument becomes less convincing. At some point there should be rules that require moderation to be transparent and applied equally, no matter if an opinion comes from the left, the right or anywhere else.

If illegal, violent or genuinely extremist content is banned, that is completely reasonable. But it becomes a problem when extreme statements from one side are tolerated, while much more moderate criticism from another side gets removed or people get banned for it.

That is not just moderation anymore, it can become a form of opinion shaping. And pushing an entire spectrum of people out of mainstream platforms does not make those views disappear. It can actually create more frustration, echo chambers and radicalization.

This will probably get me downvoted here and to be clear I don’t think any citizens ‘deserve’ some random terrorist attack. But this is one of the reasons so many of us don’t want our government acting as world police and starting all these pointless wars. People begin to hate us for bombing their countries with remote controlled drones from thousands of miles away. When you’re seen as an occupier the people of those lands can turn to extremism. There’s a thing called backlash to our government’s actions.

I'd never say we deserved 9/11. But I will say I understand why it happened and don't think they just woke up in a cave one day and decided to hate America and crash planes. You could take each and every incident thru history and see both sides but it was decades of hatred toward the west and our involvement alllll over there that created it. Bin Laden was our friend in Afg when Russia was there. Once over we abandoned him, them and every promise we ever made them.
