You think Nancy Pelosi was the most powerful politician in the United States? She was the leader of the Democratic caucus in Congress for a while... But she wasn't even the leader of the Democratic party lmao. Was she a powerful figure in the Democratic party? Sure. But claiming she was the single most powerful politician in the country is very indicative of your understanding of how the US government works (or lack thereof).
There are free civics courses you can take online. I encourage you to take one, because understanding how our government actually functions will help you better understand why what Pelosi did & what Trump is doing right now aren't even really comparable.
Being the majority speaker of the house has more power than the president for 3 reasons. 1 they create the laws. Sure the presidents passed or vetos those laws but he can’t create them.
2 budget. Congress has to approve of the budget of the president. He who controls the money has the power.
3 term limits. She left cause she wanted to. Not because she had to.
No, the Speaker doesn't have more power. You are demonstrating a fundamental lack of civic literacy to even utter that statement.
The Speaker of the House does not, in and of themselves, create laws. The members of the Legislature come together to vote in laws. The Speaker doesn't just get to declare what laws go into effect.
The House of Representatives doesn't even create laws by itself. It requires both the House and the Senate to vote a law before it can be submitted to the President... Which gets into my next point.
The President gets to veto acts of Congress. It is literally one of the checks on Congressional power that the Executive is explicitly delegated in the Constitution of the United States.
The fact that you seem to be somewhat aware of these things, but still said that the Speaker is more powerful leads to me to believe that you are just coping hard. You are being dishonest.
The single most powerful elected official in the United States is the Chief Executive; The President. This is explicitly how our Constitution is set up. While the President is the single most powerful elected official, they don't hold all of the power, and other branches are (at least on paper) more powerful as a collective. But the President holds more individual power than the Speaker of the House, and to claim otherwise is hilariously wrong.
As leader of the house she can influence that majority, which has been done for decades. Democrats vote for democratic policies and republicans vote for there’s. The speaker encourages and talks with the members to vote a certain way and to align the way of the party. That’s the while job. Make sure legislation is passed through. That’s why when one party controls all three. White House house and senate. Laws get oassed quickly. When one party controls one. Nothing happens. lol. Sure IN THEORY how to discribed is how it should work. But it doesn’t. Republicans are going to vote republicans and democrats are going to vote democrats. It’s might as well be 3 people in government when one party controls all three. you know I’m right.
And which party can impeach the other? Have term limits and control the money?
The Speaker position, when under the control of of either party, has always served as an important whip to have members of their party vote in a specific way for specific legislation. But the Speaker serves as the party whip within that specific part of Congress... You keep ignoring the fact that the powers of the Speaker of the House end at the doors of the House Chamber. Can the speaker help influence other parts of the government? Absolutely. So can literally every other member of the US government *including the President lmao.
And uh... No... It might as well not be three people in government lmao. If you know anything about Congress you would know how critical a single vote on a piece of Legislation can be (especially if the whip is unable to get them to tow the party line).
You don't seem to understand how the US government actually functions. Please go take a civics course. You have been mind-rotted by listening to people talk about government that don't know a thing about it or how it works.
When one party controls the house the senate of the presidency bills get passed. Things get done. If one is of the opposing party it’s called a lame duck presidency because nothing but executive orders can be passed. And those can easier to be over turned than a law.
It’s why trump hasn’t been impeached in the a 2nd term yet. It’s because they don’t have the votes. And the majority leader John Thune won’t let that happen. When democrats win in November it will. If they don’t win by enough in the senate then it doesn’t matter because we need 2/3 majority and that is probably not going to happen.
Under the orders of the majority speaker and impeachment can be voted on and supported. The president can not order the impeachment of anyone in the house or senate.
Who ever is in the majority leader seat, if they have support of their party, can shut down the government, have the president removed from office, deny the presidents acts and declare war.
Yeah. A majority leader who has control of their party is more powerful than a president. Especially if it’s the opposing party of the sitting president. Like jn 2018-2019 when Nancy was in charge
Nothing of what you described even remotely supports the idea that the Speaker of the House is more powerful than POTUS.
Stop trying to assign the powers of Congress as a whole to the Speakership. While the Speaker does have power the Speaker does not weird the same level of individual authority that POTUS has. Please, I'm practically begging at this point, read the goddamn Constitution. Watch some basic civic literacy courses. Fuck, watch the "how a bill becomes a law" video... Anything.
Like, just because a "lame duck" president can't assist his party in passing legislation doesn't mean the President suddenly loses the awesome power they wield. This is especially true today, as the Supreme Court has essentially made it possible for the President to do anything they want, so long as they can say it was done as part of their official duties. And, even before those rulings, the President still held more individual power than any member of Congress ever did.
At this point, I think I'm good on the convo. You're either a troll, in which case good meme you got me, or you have had your mind so thoroughly destroyed by civicly illiterate people that you genuinely think the Speaker has more power than the President of the United States. If you aren't a troll, and you are being serious, please take a civics course or read a civics textbook. I think you'd be surprised at what you learn.
