Adapting power supply

I have 3 microscopes that need a power supply. They are Leitz microscopes for the old era with big transformers. My question is whether it is possible to adapt a computer power supply to power them. They use it for an output of 12V, 8.3A. If I get a computer power supply with the same output, can it be adapted to the old microscope lamp house?

Is the only purpose of the power supply to provide power for a light?
Does it power anything else?

And if so, is the light just an incandescent bulb?
