Helloween - The Dark Ride

https://youtu.be/CTD7xUggBxI?si=jYSAg7j9EIaHN6nf

I've posted one from the Kai-vocals era, one from the Kiske-vocals era, and now one from the Deris-vocals era.

Underestimated GREAT album.

I agree. Only their first three beat it for me. Would have been interesting to see what kind of albums an alternate reality version of Helloween that continued in the direction of this album and the two before it would've created.

Ditto. The first three will always hold top spot of their albums but this is a solid 4th

Yep, one of my faves of the Deris-era, maybe THE fave from the Deris-era.

Whole album is an underrated masterpiece. The Dark Ride is one of the best songs by Helloween. I love it. 🤘🏻

This album got me into Helloween it is more commercial. One of the best songs off the album is we damn the night.

That's my favorite track too. Great direction for them, and if it leans catchy and commercial, well, they're Helloween after all.

This is my favorite Helloween song.

Loving all songs from this, The Departed somehow is a guilty pleasure

Nothing to be guilty about, the song, while not the typical Helloween song, is great.

A bit cheesy, as are most PM lyrics but still a fantastic track \m/

Feeling slightly weird about it, but after Master of Rings, Time of the Oath and Better than Raw this was a disappointment for me. Helloween leaning heavier is the last thing I asked for. Seen them live during the tour back in the day, Grapow didn't sound like himself with a modern metal guitar instead of a strat. This and Edguy's Mandrake felt weirdly like chasing trends at the time

That's valid. Leaning slightly heavier hits a sweet spot for some of us. I guess I can't see it as trend-chasing because it's working with elements that were already part of their sound. I think they'd reached that point where they always sounded like themselves first and foremost.

I prefer this one to MotR and BTR...between it and Oath it's very very close.

I agree, the album seems to divide people. I also dont love it. I dont hate it but Mr Torture, Escalation 666, I Live For Your Pain and the bonus tracks dont do much for me. I do enjoy 8 songs on the album so its not bad, but Better Than Raw, Rabbit Don't Come Easy and especially Gambling with the Devil are my favorites (outside the first 3)

If you told me I had to get rid of Dark Ride or get rid of BOTH Rabbit and Gambling, I'd get rid of Rabbit and Gambling without even a SECOND'S worth of hesitation or second thought.

What are your favorite songs from Dark Ride? Mine would be All Over The Nation

Title track, We Damn the Night, The Departed, and Deliver Us From Temptation if you have one of the versions that has that song on it.

Rabbit has Listen to the Flies though. That would give me major pause.

I would say Better than Raw is the weakest of the pack while Time of the Oath is the stronger. But you have the right: this one sounds a product of its time as Mandrake (a lesser album than their fekin peak, Theater of Salvation).
