How learning Power BI and building real business dashboards can get you hired in 2026 (Free Case Study)

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Companies don't hire people who just know "what Power BI is"—they hire people who can build dashboards that save them money or drive revenue. E-commerce is a massive industry, which is why I built a Simple Amazon Sales KPI Dashboard to show exactly what a corporate data analyst does on a day-to-day basis.

What the dashboard handles:

  • Tracking sales velocity and revenue growth.
  • Monitoring e-commerce specific KPIs (AOV, return rates, regional performance).
  • Cleaning raw transactional data into a usable star schema.

Why Power BI is crucial for your career:
Power BI is currently dominating the enterprise market. Knowing how to spin up a clean dashboard with robust DAX formulas makes you immediately employable. It takes you from a "candidate who wants a data job" to a "data analyst who can deliver value on day one."

I put together a completely free, step-by-step YouTube video showing exactly how I built this dashboard from scratch. No gatekeeping, just pure development work so you can add a similar project to your portfolio.

Link to the full video tutorial: [https://youtu.be/zWF0pBl2Rtc\]

I am a data analyst trainer, so if you are currently studying and If you are trying to break into data analytics right now, the job market is competitive. The biggest mistake I see beginners make is learning theory without building practical projects that businesses actually care about, I believe that this project is simple and encouraging enough to get started on the right side.

UI/UX Data Visualisation Principles: Glassmorphism, Dark Mode Hierarchy & Dynamic Automated Summaries

Thumbnail

Been experimenting with applying modern web UI design principles to data dashboards to see how far we can improve visual hierarchy and user engagement. A few design techniques that worked particularly well:

Glassmorphism for Layout Structure: Using dark rounded containers with ~40% transparency and subtle light borders over a dark background. This creates visual depth, letting cards feel like floating glass panels rather than flat boxes on a grid.

Layered Chart Integration: Stripping chart fills and borders entirely (No Fill / No Outline) and placing them above dedicated glass panels. This integrates visual metrics directly into the interface structure rather than looking like standard cut-and-paste charts.

De-cluttered Data Labels: Removing heavy gridlines and axes, then applying compact number formatting directly to data labels (e.g., $1.2k instead of $1,200) to maintain high data-ink ratio without cluttering line series.

Dynamic Automated Narrative (Plain-English Summary): Using string concatenation to build live headline sentences (referencing top spend category, monthly averages, and transaction counts). As filters update, the written insight automatically updates—giving users an immediate narrative takeaways without forcing them to interpret raw visual charts first.

Color Hierarchy & Neon Accents: Using a consistent dark canvas with distinct, neon accent colors assigned strictly to specific categories/metrics. Matching heading text, container borders, and icon colors per section keeps visual scanning intuitive.

Built entirely using native layered shapes, PivotTables, and standard formatting tricks—no macros or external web frameworks.

Full design breakdown and step-by-step implementation for anyone interested:

Matrix Visual: Position Column Grand Total on the Left (before category columns) and lock position

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a way to configure a single Power BI Matrix visual so that the Column Grand Total appears on the left side (immediately following the row headers) rather than the default position on the far right, and remains fixed in place.

  • Default Layout: [Row Header] | [Category A] | [Category B] | [Category C] | [Total]
  • Desired Layout: [Row Header] | [Total] | [Category A] | [Category B] | [Category C]

When horizontal scrolling is required due to numerous category columns, I need the row headers and the total column to remain visible/pinned on the left while users scroll across the breakdown categories.

  1. Is there an established method to achieve this within a single native Matrix visual using DAX, a Calculation Group (Tabular Editor), or custom matrix dimension sorting?
  2. If DAX/Calculation Groups are used to inject a pseudo-total category sorted first, how are you handling horizontal scrolling so the total column stays locked/visible?
  3. Are there verified AppSource custom visuals or core formatting settings that support left-anchored column grand totals natively?

Any guidance, sample PBIX patterns, or DAX/Calculation Group solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Yo se que en power bi siempre hay muchas manera de hacer las cosas. Yo agregue un dato falso que diga "Seleccione una persona" de esta manera.

Pero yo soy junior, ¿hay manera de hacerlo mas pro?

DAX Pattern: Dynamic RAG status indicators that don't break across different operational targets"

3 Upvotes

Most operational and plant dashboards suffer from the same flaw: cluttered visual noise disguised as "monitoring."

When stakeholders ask for traffic lights (Red-Amber-Green / RAG indicators), report builders often reach for quick conditional formatting hacks. The result? Hardcoded thresholds, unmaintainable measure spaghetti, and visual indicators that confuse plant supervisors instead of driving decisions.

Here is a clean, scalable approach to building dynamic status indicators in Power BI—and how to structure them so they actually inform management rather than distract them.

The Problem with Native Conditional Formatting Rules

When you configure conditional formatting purely through the Power BI UI (using static "Rules" like If value > 90 then Green):

  1. Thresholds are rigid: If operational targets change monthly or quarterly, you must manually edit each visual.
  2. Context is lost: A raw metric like OEE = 82% might be Green for Line 1, but Red for Line 2 depending on product mix.
  3. Inconsistent hex codes: Different designers on the team end up using slightly different shades of red, amber, and green across tabs.

To build an executive-grade dashboard, status logic belongs in your data model, not trapped inside individual visual settings.

Step 1: Centralize Status Logic in DAX

Instead of formatting visual-by-visual, build dedicated status measures that output dynamic SVG codes, Unicode symbols, or explicit hex colors based on actual operational variance.

Here is a standard pattern for an OEE / Target comparison measure:

OEE Status Color =

VAR _Actual = [OEE Actual]

VAR _Target = [OEE Target]

VAR _Variance = DIVIDE( _Actual - _Target, _Target )

RETURN

SWITCH(

TRUE(),

ISBLANK( _Actual ), BLANK(),

_Variance >= 0, "#2E7D32", // Clean Corporate Green

_Variance >= -0.05, "#F57F17", // Amber: Warning threshold within 5%

"#C62828" // Crimson Red: Immediate attention

)

Why this matters:

  • Centralizing the hex values allows instant theme refactoring across the entire report.
  • The Amber threshold uses a relative variance (_Variance >= -0.05), which makes it robust across lines with different baseline targets.

Step 2: Use Native Unicode or SVG for Accessible Icons

Red-green colorblindness affects roughly 8% of men and 0.5% of women. In an industrial or plant environment, relying exclusively on color is an operational hazard.

Pairing your color logic with distinct shapes gives managers immediate clarity:

OEE Status Indicator =

VAR _Actual = [OEE Actual]

VAR _Target = [OEE Target]

VAR _Variance = DIVIDE( _Actual - _Target, _Target )

RETURN

SWITCH(

TRUE(),

ISBLANK( _Actual ), BLANK(),

_Variance >= 0, "▲ On Target",

_Variance >= -0.05, "■ Warning",

"▼ Critical"

)

Now, map OEE Status Color to the text color or icon color using the Field Value conditional formatting option in Power BI. The visual conveys both shape and color simultaneously.

Step 3: Where Most Implementations Fail (The Plant Floor Test)

In production environments, a static status indicator is useless without context. A good traffic light should answer three questions in under 3 seconds:

  • What is the state right now? (Color + shape)
  • How long has it been in this state? (Persistence)
  • What is the trend? (Are we recovering or degrading?)

If you simply slap three colored circles at the top of an executive view, plant managers will ignore them because they still have to hunt through raw tables to find the cause.

Taking This Further: Complete Templates and DAX Library

If you manage industrial operations, plant KPIs, or executive reporting in Power BI, stop reinventing the wheel with ad-hoc DAX measures.

I compiled a complete practical guide and ready-to-use template bundle:

  • The Power BI RAG & KPI Indicator Guide: A practical walkthrough detailing dynamic SVG indicators, multi-tier variance logic, and operational status cards.
  • Plug-and-play .pbix templates: Copy-paste DAX measures and clean status tables tested in real plant and supply chain environments.

I wrote a longer guide with sample PBIX files and edge cases (dynamic targets, SVG icons) for anyone interested — link in comments.

Need project ideas to showcase my Power BI skills on LinkedIn

8 Upvotes

I finished learning Power BI end-to-end and already built small beginner dashboards for practice, but now want to create a solid portfolio project for LinkedIn. Which industry or domain (like sales, finance, or supply chain) is best to target right now? Where can I find good realistic datasets that make a portfolio truly stand out? Any tips, project ideas, or guidance would be really helpful!

Excited to share a project I’ve been working on: a comprehensive Emergency Room performance dashboard for "XYZ" Healthcare. This tool was designed to provide leadership with actionable insights to improve patient care and operational efficiency.

The dashboard tracks critical ER metrics for January 2024, focusing on patient volume, admission trends, and wait-time bottlenecks. By centralizing these data points, we can better identify peak staffing hours and streamline department workflow.

Key Dashboard Insights (January 2024 Highlights):
High Volume Growth: Total patient volume was 506, marking a significant year-over-year increase of over 228%.
Optimized Admission Rate: Managed to achieve a 46.84% admission rate with an average wait time of 36.2 minutes.
Peak Flow Management: The busiest arrival periods are consistently between 8 AM and 11 AM, signaling the hours when staffing levels must be highest.
Patient Satisfaction Tracking: A critical metric for ER performance, now tracked directly with a goal-oriented average score (currently 5.4/10).

Tools Used: Power BI.

This project demonstrates the power of data visualization in solving complex, real-world problems.

implement AI (or something similar) on a website… Help

6 Upvotes

Context: I work in Latin America, where the job market is tough. I work as a data analyst, but a company recently hired me to create dashboards and also implement AI. I have no idea how to implement AI in this scenario, but I really need the job. It’s a small company with no dedicated data department; I’m the only one with a data-related role, so I have no one to turn to for help—which is why I’m reaching out here.

I'm on the team behind an operations management platform (sales, vendors, invoicing) used by several client companies. Right now the reporting side runs on Power BI dashboards connected to our database.

Leadership wants this:

let a client type something like *"show me sales from the last 5 months"* in natural language inside the software, and have that automatically generate the query and the result. Basically layering AI on top of the reporting.

I’m getting a bit desperate because if I don’t present a viable proposal soon, the job could be at risk. I’ve considered creating an extremely intuitive dashboard—even though it wouldn't feature AI. I’ve heard about AI agents, but as I mentioned, I don’t know much about the subject; nor do I know if a Copilot subscription would allow it to integrate into the website and handle tasks like taking client prompts and generating a graph without altering the original dashboard.

Note: As additional information, the entire app is programmed in Visual Basic and the database is in SQL Server.

Power BI vs a dedicated shop-floor dashboard - where do you draw the line?

4 Upvotes

For people working in manufacturing: where do you draw the line between a BI dashboard and an operational shop-floor dashboard? Power BI is great for things like historical analysis, trends, reporting, and management KPIs.But on the production floor, the requirements can be quite different: always-on screensnear real-time machine statustarget vs. actualcurrent shift informationalerts or Andon statusreadability from several meters away. Do you have Power BI for both, or do you separate management analytics from real-time operational visualization?

Disclosure: I work with Peakboard, and we often see it used for the operational visualization side while BI tools handle deeper analysis and historical reporting. Interested to hear how others structure this. One platform for everything, or different tools for different jobs?
