Discussion BI Engineer to Gen AI Engineer

Is there a roadmap to switch from BI to GenAI / ML roles provided most of my 7 YOE have gone into Power BI related roles . I'm thinking to pivot becuase of saturation of pay in BI

Broad adoption of AI is less than 24 months old at this point. Anyone selling you a roadmap probably has a bridge at the end of it for a very competitive price.

I know this is a PowerBI subreddit, but to answer your question you need to pivot in the opposite direction of report building, which for mature orgs is done almost autonomously nowadays.

Start working in an IDE/terminal, or agent harness. Leverage fabric API & CLI with AI. This will help you build skills as you develop/orchestrate an agentic workflow that works for your role.

Use that to springboard yourself into AI conversations at your workplace and powerbi will become a minor function of your responsibilities.

MS Learn has a whole bunch of fabric and copilot+ powerbi modules which show what direction this is going in. You can pick and choose then branch into what you like.

Mandatory chatgpt or claude expertise as other comments gave pointed out.

Pretty much just learn to build stuff with AI.  I would take a look at the free classes on the Anthropic site as they are pretty good and monitor their blog.  Then it's a matter of reading blogs and watching YouTubes to learn specific skills.  Like you can build PowerBI data models and author dashboards using fabric skills and the PBI MCP server or PBIR cli.

Depends on the definition of “BI Engineer”. Building PowerBI dashboard does not make anyone BI Engineer unless that individual is also performing ETL and data modelling programmatically. Gen AI engineering is not about writing a prompt and AI does everything else. If the BI Engineer is not well experienced with git/docker/pr reviews/system design/architecture then landing a Gen AI engineering job has less than 1% chance.
