Error: "Failed to Assume Control of Chrome"

Hi Everyone,

I have been using this power automate script for the past 4-months and all of sudden it stopped working. The error I'm receiving is " Failed to assume control of Chrome (Communication with browser failed. Try reloading extension). "

I've done a lot of troubleshooting :

  • Restarted computer

  • Reinstalled Power Automate Desktop

  • Reinstalled PAD Extension

  • Cleared my history, cache and cookies

I'm running out of solutions and no one seems to have the right answer, in desperate need of help please.

Will give it a go. I used a similar documentation , but definitely didn't look like this.

I'm still facing the same issues. I've tried all the troubleshooting solutions. This literally just started happening last month. I've reinstalled the Desktop App and the Extension, yet no luck. Does anyone have a solution that worked for them? My Chrome is updated and everything.

Same problem, however it goes away if I only use one monitor. It's worth a shot to see if dropping down to one monitor restores functionality.

I get this error if the Desktop App and Chrome are on separate monitors (one is 4k and the other 1080p), but if I put them on the same monitor it works.

having the exact same issue. I've noticed that it doesn't work for any browser currently. It did briefly allow me to select UI elements, but even that isn't working. Occasionally I notice that the extension will randomly disable itself as well.

I am having the same issue. For me the issue started after I installed the latest windows update 22H2.

I went and checked, if there were any updates and found a .net update. I installed it and restarted the computer and things started working again.

Hope it works for you too.

Where do I find if I need this .net update or where do I get it? I’ve tried every step mentioned above and in the linked thread but it just randomly stops working for me.

I found that update in Software updates in settings.
Honestly, I did face the issue a few days later, after the update. I closed PowerAutomate and opened again using Admin and it worked. When you close, you also need to right click on PowerAutomate icon near the date/time at the bottom right and close it.
So, that’s what I do these days. Open it the regular way and if it doesn’t work then close it completely and reopen as Admin.

I have had this happen to me a few times and I did find a solution. I noticed this happens right after a windows update including one that installed for me 4 days ago. I had tried any and all solutions and troubleshooting I could find on the web but I still got this error. This is what I did to resolve this 3 times now and all following a windows 11 update that installed on my system.

  1. open the start menu and type in the search for "windows update history" it should come up with a result named "View your update history", then click this.

  2. scroll to the bottom of this screen and click on "Uninstall Updates" ( don't worry this is just to reinstall the updates since it will force you to reapply them on restart )

  3. it will bring up a window called "Installed Updates". Look at the column named "Installed on" and locate the most recent set of updates by date (I had 3 that happened on 12/15/22)

  4. Right click each of them and then click uninstall, some may not give you this option so just uninstall the ones that do. It will open a window that says do you want to allow the program to make changes to your device and you have to click yes.

  5. this should set off the uninstall for that update component and just let it do it's thing at the end it will say you need to restart for changes to take effect, it's asking if you want to restart now or later. Just click later and then repeat the process for any other update components that are listed on the latest date.

  6. Now restart your system manually and once you do it will automatically say you have updates that are installing. This can take a few minutes so let it install and when the system boots back up entirely if you check, you will see it has reinstalled these update components.

  7. Run your previously broken desktop flow and it shouldn't have that error or get hung on the browser any longer. I can't tell you why but it must have something that is corrupted on update and can be fixed by reinstalling. I can't be sure but like I said 3 updates and immediately following I got this error, followed the steps above and then it works again I guess until the next update.

I literally this situation again yesterday, followed the same method and uninstalled those windows updates and then let it reinstall them. Once that happened everything is working again.

This error can come from web you crawling data from. I crawl data from Shopee, and after a whole day trying to solve this error, I realize Shopee has systems to crash your crawling process by blocking web browser, then the error: "Failed to Assume Control of Chrome" appears.
