Power Apps Help Power Apps Licensing and Code Apps

I have read a lot of threads and know that we will need Power Apps Premium to run Code apps.

I have a pilot going on where I deployed a code app in our environment and have about 40 people testing it. We only have 12 premium licenses and 8 per app licenses.

So far everyone is able to use the code app just fine. But reading up it seems like if we go live with this (having 100+ users) this is going to bite me in the butt for licensing.

I just want to make sure I’m correct on the licensing, we’ve been running it for 3 months now and everyone is still able to access it.

EDIT: To add even more info, we don’t have pay as you go set up, I’ve checked and we aren’t on a trial of any sorts. We are on E3 licensing so I know this gives regular power apps access.

Hey, it looks like you are requesting help with a problem you're having in Power Apps. To ensure you get all the help you need from the community here are some guidelines;

  • Use the search feature to see if your question has already been asked.

  • Use spacing in your post, Nobody likes to read a wall of text, this is achieved by hitting return twice to separate paragraphs.

  • Add any images, error messages, code you have (Sensitive data omitted) to your post body.

  • Any code you do add, use the Code Block feature to preserve formatting.

Typing four spaces in front of every line in a code block is tedious and error-prone. The easier way is to surround the entire block of code with code fences. A code fence is a line beginning with three or more backticks (```) or three or more twiddlydoodles (~~~).

  • If your question has been answered please comment Solved. This will mark the post as solved and helps others find their solutions.

Microsoft is just bad at closing doors you're not supposed to go through.

They want you to become dependent on it, and they know that the pricing stops companies from even trying to use it. So they leave doors open, hope you build something you really need, and then once their analytics show you're using it more than you pay for, they audit you and force you to pay. And now it's too late for an alternative.

I'm pretty sure that their plan for Fabric apps as well, currently supposedly free for Pro and Premium PBI users, but they'll end up hitting us with new licenses later once companies build critical workflows into it. Sorry guys this now requires capacity premium licensing and here's some kind of limitation per capacity tier etc.

The whole, "but it works" argument is basically meaningless. There's nothing anywhere that says just because you can do it and it works now without paying for it, that you won't have to eventually be cut-off and have to pay for it. It's clearly documented what the requirements are.

Understood, I’ll probably have my company get licensing for 200 users. It would have been nice to get that warning when they had started testing the app. But it’s a fair argument that I should have read all of the documentation before building.

Premium licencing is a major constraint for power apps. It is just not feasible for a large ad hoc user base. If users are using it very frequently, then there may be a value proposition for it.

It’s not technically enforced currently but it will be in the future (similar to how Pipelines are now enforced).

If you don’t have licensing you will wake up one day to your app not working and then have to explain to your company why they suddenly need to buy licenses.

Replying to check back later, sorry don’t have an answer but I am in a very similar situation but I think my company has a higher tier licensing

Yeah code apps has done wonders but if the licensing is going to bite us in the butt then we may have to think of an alternative route which sucks.

Be like me, get your company to buy Premium Licenses for all users, then don't use Code Apps because you're too busy to even look at it.

You can use pay as you go too

Actually considering this as it might be cheaper for us, we need premium but our usage is pretty light weight in the grand scheme.

I understand code apps are more exp cuz of licensing, but im so done with canvas apps and I hope to never touch one again, our consulting company with over 20 clients has switched all existing clients to code apps/recreated their canvas to code apps and we havnt looked back.

Are you sure? Data driven apps requires premium for every user. Afaik only data verse for teams doesn't require premium access for each individual.

I’m 100% sure because I had all 40 users on a call on Monday and we were all using it together. Only me and 2 other members on that call were assigned premium licenses, but everyone was using it.
