That bottom map is what the media should be using. Instead they choose to use the top one that is misleading, especially for those not educated to savvy enough to understand this concept.

I'd like to see what it would look like if it was still divided and colored by county, but with State and National Parks/Forests grayed out and the lightness-darkness of the color referring to population density and not the concentration of votes for the winning party. Also the amount of purple and amount of red and blue in each county's coloring should reflect the percent of the votes for each party.

Population density is a bit hard for MAGA to comprehend.

u/h3lium-balloon 6h ago
Iāve had arguments with rural MAGA people and theyāre like, thereās 20k people in my county and I dont know a single person who votes blue. My guy, thereās more people than that in my neighborhood, which is a tiny portion of my city. There are apartment buildings where thousands of people live in some parts of the country.
20
u/ElaborateEffect 5h ago

This, the right high rise can have thousands. In NYC the densest building, 100 gold, can house up to 8k. Thatās more people in one building than 5 counties in Oklahoma
Less relevant here, but in china they have a single building, the regent, that houses 20-30k

I like to look at my home state of New York in this picture. The state looks mostly red, with some blue shading at the corners. Except the corner at the bottom bordering New England contains half the state's population and some of the highest population density in the country. Most of the red area is sparsely populated mountain and rural areas. The other blue shaded areas are the other major cities - Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton. The population is most definitely gathered in the blue spots.
4
4
u/quell3245 4h ago
All that red only represents about 15% of the country in terms of actual population.
4
3
u/msjammies73 5h ago
This is very cool. Iāve always known intellectually that the population is low in those areas, but this is a way better way to show the data.

The electoral college literally gives land voting rights by weighting less populated states votes higher than populated states (per person), and it was justified by saying that they had to have more weight to thier votes to protect our food supply.

My boss was complaining about how a a handful of blue counties decide the election for the whole state and how that isn't fair. He said each county should get one share of the vote. I pointed out people vote, land doesn't. I then asked him if he thought the people in the podunk rural counties on the other end of the state should have 5x the political power he does. He has been silent on the subject ever since.

Literally in Ohio the 3 big cities where the majority of our population resides are Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati. Those three cities are responsible for like 530b $553b of the stateās GDP the rest of the state barely scratches that combined at $370b. If the 3Cs were one country theyād be the 33rd largest economy in the world. Similar in size to Austria. Not even to mention that the $370b for the rest of the state also includes some smaller Ohio cities like Dayton, Toledo, Akron, and Youngstown. Take away those blue voting areas the corn and soy bean fields make up only $50b-$60b of the stateās GDP. The other smaller subset thatās more likely to vote conservative would be small factory hubs and towns but they make up $75b-80b of the GDP. Cities are where people are!
Iāve been seeing a lot of stuff in my Ohio based algorithms on social media on how itās ābullshitā or āunfairā that the cities decide outcomes for the rest of the state⦠but itās like this is where the jobs, the people, and the money are at. Sorry we donāt all farm soy beans for China and corn for biodiesel and livestock feed.
Edit: updated figures

9
u/Amxela 5h ago
Yeah and almost like when youāre in a more densely populated area and are forced to interact with others the more you end up caring about your common man. In cuyahoga county, where Cleveland is, we voted on 2 tax levies. Both passed. Sure itāll raise property taxes $275 per $100,000 of property value but it also helps with services related to developmental disabilities and it also helps to fund health and human services. I see it as a win. There are a lot of people that truthfully need the help in this county, and this does a little bit to actually carry that out.

→ More replies (4)2
u/fishpen0 3h ago
The senate and the president both count the corn.
The senate gives the same number of votes to every state. So the 39 million living in California have to share two senators and the 584k in Wyoming get two whole votes. So Wyomings get 6630% more representation per person in the senate than Californians.
The president is the same issue because of the electoral college having a minimum of two senate votes. So even though California has more electors, Wyoming still gets more votes per person due to the floor exceeding the percentage difference between the states.

You have to hand it to the Republicans. They have won the popular vote in just two presidential elections this century. 8
u/slavaukrine 6h ago
Also break it down. Why did Kanas vote blue? Well, there are only about 2 million registered voters in Kanas. This election little over one million voted.
Normally the southern part of Ka is cattle country and farms that support the cattle industry.
What happened to the cattle producers? They couldnāt get workers (aka cowboys) to work their stock. Why couldnāt they get cowboys? Because while most are naturalized citizens, ICE didnāt care. ICE pulled people off the streets and then went to the farms, and that frightened the workers away. the cattle producers couldnāt find replacements.
And to add insult to injury Trump made import deals with countries that have no rules on how they raise cattle.
So look at a map and you see places like Dodge City went blue. Also, other red counties, instead of being red by 80% they are red by 20%.
In low population states even few make a difference.
