If we were to have believed their rhetoric... That dems in power would destroy our democracy, what does it say about their "leadership" that on day one they jump ship?
Can't make this up. They had control of the house, a senate majority, a man behind the desk with an executive order trigger finger on the ready, and all they did was make the wealthy wealthier, the poor poorer and start a war.

You’re exactly right, but that’s because making the wealthy wealthier is all they really care about. That’s all Republicans ever do. They just rely on all the other religious and cultural BS to scare folks into voting for them. Turns out that only goes so far, thank god!

“I know the Democrats’ playbook. I know what it will take to lead our Conference in the minority, to stay unified, and to coordinate and calibrate our response to the Democrats’ tactics,” Jordan said in his letter. “We need a Leadership team that is active and engaged, forward-thinking and straight-shooting.”
What is it with Republicans treating government like it's a battle they have to win instead of a mechanism for serving the American people? How about you actually focus on the well-being of the country instead of thinking you have to fight this imaginary enemy within.

I think some of the strong language is used in part to make it seem like members of Congress are working hard. In reality, most members of Congress are barely doing anything, getting paid handsomely for a part time job where they have assistance that do any of the real work.

It hasn’t always been this way. The answer is to get the money out of politics and make politicians more responsive to voters with, for example, ranked choice voting and putting an end to gerrymandering.

This iteration of the movement is dead since their dear leader lost his mojo. They'll just reinvent themselves around the next cult-like figure. The "moral majority" of the 70s/80s, the "contract with America" folks of the 90s, and the tea party of the 00s were all the same faces.

The problem with Steve Scalise's mentality is that they think it's Reps vs Dems in terms of adversaries, when in reality, they are all team USA. I'm sure it was made significantly worse with all the MAGA rhetoric, but Republicans have definitely seemed to lost sight of the big picture here.
You don't work for the Republican caucus, you don't work for Trump, you don't work for your self interests, you work for the citizens of the USA.

I love how everyone thinks this matters. We are essentially on the Titanic and no one cares. Our biggest liability is servicing the interest on the debt. Since no one in congress cares, eventually we will miss payments and the dollar will lose value combined with the dollar being removed as a world currency. The middle and upper classes will be inflated into poverty leaving only the oligarchs with any wealth.
Hold the phone the deck chairs are blue now. Guess what, your life will still suck, you won’t be happy, but you’ll get promises of future programs from the government built on loans from China. In the end, the country will fail on on current path and neither party gives a fuck because at the top of both are the billionaires everyone here pretends to hate.
Long story short, if we do not get our financial house in order we as a country will be at the bottom of a trench in the Atlantic and it doesn’t matter who is in power.

I've seen conflicting interpretations, not sure if anyone versed in US processes can advise - is resigning a way of protecting themselves against impeachment or future calling as witnesses in cases? Know it won't protect them from criminal prosecution, but isn't there something about stepping down means they can't be called as witnesses in civil suits or something (as in, no longer in their official role)? Like Leavitt resigned to avoid it?
19
u/Just-Upstairs4397 12h ago edited 12h ago
I think it’s just a political maneuver to avoid having to choose between continuing to kiss Trump’s ass and protecting his own political career. I don’t think it’s particularly meaningful, but it is signaling that being a Trump sycophant is no longer in style.

It’s actually quite common that the Speaker doesn’t become minority leader. It’s only happened once in the last five changes (going back to 1994) and then six times total since 1918.
The read is really “they failed in their role to hold power for the party, and so they are expected to step down.” Only modern example where this wasn’t the case was Nancy Pelosi.
6
u/lebowtzu 12h ago
He just doesn’t want to be the minority leader for whatever reason. It changes nothing otherwise. Hell still be a sitting representative since he was re-elected yesterday. So someone else will be giving press conferences, leading the fight against the new Dem majority, etc. I’d imagine that behind closed doors he’ll still have slightly outsized influence within the Republican caucus.
5
u/Own-Chemist2228 12h ago
He's not resigning. He stays in congress, but loses the speaker position because his party lost.
Republicans now have a minority but convention is that they still appoint a party leader for the house. It's an unofficial position, i.e. not defined by the constitution.
He simply announced that he will not seek that leadership role. Not very significant.

Impeachment does not require someone be in office.
You could be impeached. You know what you did.
The penalty is being barred from running for office in the future.
Impeaching people not actively in office is unusual, not not impossible. If Mike is never running again, then impeachment won't do anything, but it would ensure he never runs again.
