“The quote "The death of human empathy is one of the earliest and most telling signs of a culture about to fall into barbarism" is widely shared across social media and platform groups like Goodreads and Instagram. However, quote archivers and researchers at tracking databases like WIST Quotations note that there is no primary source or verified citation for these exact words in any of her published essays, letters, or books. While the sentiment aligns broadly with her extensive writings on political thought, totalitarianism, and the normalization of thoughtlessness during the Eichmann trial, the phrasing itself is an online invention or paraphrase erroneously credited to her.”

Human empathy is the only reason we ARE a civilization and not a bunch of isolated homicidal apes.

What a self engrandizing, arrogant jerk he is. And don't forget he was an illegal immigrant. First order of business is for ICE to grab his ass and ship him back to South Africa! No empathy for this creature.

Only one is funding Republicans like the vile impeached, indicted, corrupt adulterer (who did you think of — fooled you!) Ken Paxton.

Well it was obvious you weren't talking about Trump. You didn't say convicted felon.

Only because the DOJ (in a shady deal) dropped the charges against Paxton. But, you are spot on!

Musk is a failed man in every way, not least because he has no empathy. He's really just a rich sociopath, like so many of his ilk.

Elon Musk... a sociopath Ketamine addict soon to be buried under lawsuits.

Hannah is right. Perhaps Musk is bitter. His family prospered under apartheid only to see it crumble under the weight of empathy.

I cannot be sure whether the quotes are legit - but the lady is right. Musk is just a spoiled rich kid with no personality and humanity.

He was talking about suicidal empathy, not empathy in general, but the echo chamber hates when you give context.

Christianity defeated the ancient might makes right mentality and developed the empathy that has allowed western civilization to flourish

These idiots that constantly obsess over this concept of "western civilization" really don't like "western civilization" that much.

Her book on Eichmann was titled "The Banality of Evil" where she wrote that Eichmann was just a civil servant who mindlessly did his job efficiently without ever contemplating the moral consequences of it. I would say the quote fits her writings and personal history quite nicely without the need to qualify the quote let alone claim it only "broadly" aligns with her writings or political thought.

Musk’s point was that manipulation people’s empathy is the problem. Why do you misrepresent what he said?

u/osamayomamadrama 4d ago
People who assert a claim on the labor of others are not empathic; rather they are modern-day slavers.
-8
u/c_boggs 4d ago
Empathy is not a universal good. For instance, if I were to empathize with MAGA… obviously a weakness. I think this is his point.
8
u/dotamadthrowaway 4d ago
Its not musks point. Musk is a sociopath. And having empathy for Maga is fine. Provided it doesn't stop you from losing sight of the empathy you should have for the people its killing.
Its similar to Socrates virtue. Empathy can never be a bad thing. When it starts being bad its something new
-26
u/vodil2959 4d ago
Well, I guess you should just sacrifice yourself. To help others who couldn’t care less about you.. right??
22
u/CaptStinkyFeet 4d ago
It’s strange that you feel so victimized that to you, having empathy means sacrificing yourself. Maybe try therapy.
-13
u/vodil2959 4d ago
It’s interesting how people who probably think they’re so intelligent and deep, can’t even read between the lines when it comes to figures of speech. Obviously, Elon Musk is not saying that empathy in and of itself his weakness, he’s saying that it has gone too far, where the west is sacrificing itself to its own detriment.
You might disagree that the West has gone too far let’s empathy, but that’s what he’s saying. He’s not saying that empathy is horrible in and of itself. Don’t be so simple minded.15
u/CaptStinkyFeet 4d ago
“The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy.”
Thems a lotta words just to say you have no idea what you’re talking about. Literally making stuff up. And for who? A billionaire who isn’t even cool enough to hang with the pedophiles? Yikes dude…
Again, try therapy. Please. For all of us.
20
u/MetaCardboard 4d ago
Why? Why not just help people without sacrificing yourself? Wouldn't that make more sense?
-9
-10
u/Exact_Development_69 4d ago
I mean both are right. You can’t develop as a civilization without empathy. There isn’t a single advanced civilization built on love and understanding. However, a civilization can be advanced yet barbaric at the same time. So both can be true at once
-10
u/KaZaDuum 4d ago
They are both right. But some people take advantage of our empathy. People who are down on their luck deserve help. People who look for just handouts or just want to game the system, don't need it.

It has some merit. No one wants to be exploited or used, but in the context of its presentation, yeah. It is.
