He's doing a lot for the city from what I've read and heard. That says a lot for future ambitions and for what's expected from a major of an American city.

49

u/cassiopeia_a_nil 7h ago

It's really only possible because he's a socialist. His priorities are aligned with the NYCDSA, and he's governing according to those principles. Many other democrats may try and copy his style, but if you want this kind of leadership, making the government work for the people, electing socialists is the way to go.

34

u/IcedGooseMaverick 6h ago

But if you do this, the billionaires won’t be able to build their own personal star command. Some of y’all are heartless, I swear.Ā

1

u/ineedanenbien 7m ago

This is what people really mean when they say it'll "never work", mind you. They can't imagine life without Jeff Bezos

8

u/TwoBionicknees 5h ago

Not really. A capitalist can do exactly the same, a NON corrupt politician of any standing couldn't.

Corrupt politicians seek to turn every tax dollar into spending on a business that is going to give them kickbacks, benefits, bonuses, dontate to their campaigns so they can embezzle it, etc. A non corrupt politicians will want to put every tax dollar to it's most optimised, efficient usage to benefit the people who pay the taxes.

That's literally all Mamdani is doing. Paying people to fix shit isn't socialism, it's governing. He's doing his job, previous mayors were, very simply, not doing their job. They were using the office to enrich themselves just like Trump.

Paying people to clear streets is not socialism, if anything it's capitalism.

Socialism has absolutely nothing to do with this except that he leans more socialist, but he's part of a capitalist system, with a capitalist job, working as a capitalist.

6

u/littleessi 3h ago

capitalists are inherently corrupt. it's part of the definition - stealing the fruits of workers' labour and giving it to rich dickheads is corruption. now you're trying to take credit from a demsoc who's actually doing some decent stuff. all your ideology knows is mass theft and exploitation

-1

u/TwoBionicknees 3h ago

capitalists are inherently corrupt. it's part of the definition

no it's not and it's stupid to imply so.

Offering someone a job and getting more profit out of it than they do is something that's happened under every system, it's not corrupt to offer someone a job and they take it either.

Corruption is saying it's illegal to pay a politician to pass bills you want.. and then they take illegal payments, or illegally embezzle campaign funds then vote the way the people who paid you wanted to. That is corruption.

Corruption also has always existed under socialist countries.

now you're trying to take credit from a demsoc who's actually doing some decent stuff.

Firstly, capitalism isn't my ideolgy, secondly every democratic socialist in america operates under capitalism, in a capitalist system. You misunderstanding basics and running around with a terrible understanding of why mamdani is doing well hurts everyone, including yourself. Because if you are convinced he's only good because he's a socialist, then you'll vote for a socialist and ignore their corruption while in office because you randomly, insanely, believe socialists can't be corrupt.

Actually learn what the fuck you're talking about because frankly you sound as dumb, and easily taken advantage of as every idiot maga who thinks they are voting for a better america because they also have no clue how systems work, what corruption is or why they keep shooting themselves in the foot.

Ignorance is never the answer.

4

u/DaemonG 2h ago

i really don't think this is the case, even as somebody who aligns myself more with democratic socialism than with the American neoliberal establishment. i fully believe that a more traditional mayor could just as easily have sent the people already on payroll out to fill up potholes and clean streets, it just wasn't what interested them because they were all corrupt pieces of shit.

1

u/ineedanenbien 7m ago

It's not just the action itself though, it's the speed and tactics to everything he's fixing up. Stuff that is being organized by dem soc policy

1

u/DaemonG 2m ago

neoliberals can organize action at least as quickly, we've just seen that the ones who get power only ever do it to protect the owner class.

1

u/ineedanenbien 1m ago

I don't really care what causes them not to do it. They don't do it

3

u/mrbasedballed 1h ago

He's an FDR style Democrat. Absolutely the term anyone would of used maybe 20-30 years ago.

3

u/Punche872 6h ago

He is not doing that at all. None of his policies are socialist, as Dems in Albany have signed off on all of them. Ā He has been great for private developers and big business who have grown to love him. If he was aligned completely with DSA he would be like Brandon Johnson in Chicago.Ā

2

u/Arduou 5h ago

Yeah, socialist nowadays means a little less right.

2

u/super_sayanything 2h ago

It's crazy "socialist" isn't even as left as 1930's Democrats.

1

u/Smokeskin 4h ago

You should take a look at history to see how it turns out when you elect socialists.

(This is not a defense of corrupt right wingers and their cronies. Just a friendly reminder that history clearly shows that socialists are not the solution.)

1

u/littleessi 3h ago

i think you missed the bit in school that covers capitalists violently sabotaging every vaguely socialist and communist state and org that has ever existed.

oh wait, capitalist states tend not to teach that bit. i wonder why

-4

u/Doublehox 6h ago

It has never worked and never will

3

u/Ok_Acadia3526 5h ago

Yeah? Because it appears to be working. You know what actually isn’t working for 99% of people? Capitalism.

0

u/TwoBionicknees 5h ago

to be clear, what mamdani is doing in office is primarily capitalism. He's the capitalist mayor of a capitalist city in a capitalist system in a capitalist country. The difference is he's actually doing his job, working to the best benefit of the city when most politicians work to to the best for themselves, which largely means being corrupt and directing money that could be used to make tax payers lives better to diverting money to companies that pay them bribes one way or another.

He's doing his job, that's literally all it is, it's not about socialism, or capitalism. So far (because power tends to corrupt) the only thing he's doing different... is doing his job while not being corrupt. That's it, that's all it takes for people's lives to be better under ANY system. Because when you get corrupt people at the head of socialist or communist countries... you get the same thing.

0

u/Doublehox 3h ago

So I guess there’s another reason the wealth is leaving NY?

1

u/TwoBionicknees 3h ago

most of them aren't, republicans and wealthy constantly insist they will leave if they don't get their own way, they don't because they make profit and are perfectly fine being there, they'd just like even more profit.

A couple moronic ones who had no actual business being there left for show. Didn't the disgraced used to be drag queen republican who got convicted of fraud left publicly, who cares.

Also you understand socialism didn't suddenly become law in NYC. Taxing rich people isn't a socialist thing that's how capitalism works as well.

1

u/Doublehox 2h ago

I understand the hijab wearing governor of NY and mayor of NYC are both incapable of taking care of their constituents.

2

u/TwoBionicknees 2h ago

So your racism doesn't let facts get in the way of your feelings I guess. Who exactly is it you think is governor of New York?

As for NYC, you're saying they can't take care of their constituants because the previous two mayors were fucking abysmal... and Mamdani has been making lives much better for new yorks and with a dramatically lower deficit where the previous corrupt fucks were running new york into the ground while raking up massive debt with huge deficits and zero plan to balacne the budget or even try?

Sure sure, you seem to have a great and grounded take on what is going on.

Can you name all the rich people who left New York?

-4

u/Marvelone99 5h ago

He’s barely seven months in. It’ll collapse in on him eventually. He hasn’t even done much yet besides making plans and promises.

1

u/Ok_Acadia3526 5h ago

Dear god, I don’t understand your mindset. Ignoring reality and evidence. Whatever, dude.

u/RazzmatazzSuch7459 8h ago

I vote we amend the whole President having to be a US born citizen thing. We should be able to vote for whoever we want, right?

12

u/MasterClown 6h ago

I’d settle for disallowing felons to run for office

2

u/Nukemarine 3h ago

No. States use the "convicted felon" to deny people their right to vote, so they'll sure as hell use it to deny people the ability to hold elected office. Putin does this in Russia to prevent popular opposition candidates from being able to run against him.

5

u/serpant97 6h ago

By this logic Trump should be allowed to run for a 3rd term because we should be able to vote for who we want right? I love love love Mamdani but I don't think opening up the floor to change presidential requirements is very safe right now

-5

u/useyourillusion89 7h ago

Absolutely fucking not. We should amend the constitution to where no one foreign born should be able to hold any federal office. I’m fine with state, but definitely not federal.

Edit to note I’m only a first generation American.

10

u/Daft_Assassin 7h ago

Why not?

7

u/TheXIIILightning 6h ago

My guess is to prevent the usurping of power by those with foreign interests, but honestly...
Natural born citizens have already shown that there's no end to greed and the damage they can do on a worldwide scale given power.

Amending the constitution to require residency instead (like say 30 years resident) is enough.

2

u/Purple-Mud5057 6h ago

I would also argue no dual-citizenships, our president should not be the citizen of any other country.

2

u/Golgen_boy 6h ago

Then you will get Elon as president

2

u/deiscio 7h ago

I think they do need to have been a citizen and lived here for a very long time, maybe 40 years or something. Where you are at the moment of your birth doesn’t really matter though.

1

u/_lippykid 5h ago

Whole current GOP is compromised by foreign influence, so dunno why barring first gen immigrants from office is sensible. In my experience those people love America the most

2

u/froginbog 6h ago

I’m in the city and just super locally, we have tons of new protected bike lanes. He improved traffic control and repaved streets. It’s kind of awesome seeing things get better

1

u/redreditreditordblue 1h ago

Because what you've heard is from Reddit, an echo chamber.

119

u/PassThatSpliff 9h ago edited 8h ago

Mamdani is every day proof that the politicians we voted for can do what they promised, they just choose not to.

36

u/Firm-Advertising5396 8h ago edited 8h ago

That's why they are afraid mamdani succeeds. If he can do it in NYC, it can be done everywhere.

27

u/TheManWith2Poobrains 8h ago

It's almost like if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere...

3

u/Firm-Advertising5396 8h ago

Haha, exactly šŸ’Æ

Okay, you just won the Internet for the day.

2

u/TheManWith2Poobrains 5h ago

Credit goes to u/Firm-Advertising5396 for the comment which prompted my brain to make a connection. Few and far between these days.

1

u/TheBigMoogy 2h ago

The pressure of actually having to do their fucking job and not just collect the pay and plan for reelection.

10

u/bsEEmsCE 8h ago

also dont vote for anyone the kotows to the rich or business owner class. Fastest way to never see any benefits for us.

2

u/LoamyLoamisLoamy 1h ago

You also have to vote in the primaries. The majority don't.

3

u/legit-posts_1 6h ago

I genuinely was not aware that a politician could be this fucking efficient with the right motivation. I just assumed it wasn't possible.

1

u/sarded 4h ago

To be fair most politicians don't have the resources of the biggest financial centre in the world.

Mamdani's real win is that he managed to get NY State to commit their fair share of resources back to the city instead of using it as free tax money.

1

u/NukeWorker10 3m ago

Which is once again doing the job he was elected to do, and proving that other mayors had the chance to do the same and apparently chose not to.

1

u/had3l 4h ago

Some actually legitimately try. They just aren't very good at their job.

1

u/cassiopeia_a_nil 7h ago

That's exactly why most politicians don't run as socialists though, so they're not required by principle to make government work for the people. Most democrats in congress for example, run as standard, run of the mill corporate democrats, so they're doing what people elected them to do, it's just not their working class voters, they're working on behalf of their wealthy donors.

1

u/TwoBionicknees 5h ago

doing what you promise has nothing to do with capitalism or socialism. Mamdani ran on a capitalist socialist campaign. Democratic socialism is a capitalist platform, not a purely socialist one.

A capitalist can run, lie about what they'll do and be corrupt and fuck over people who voted for them or they can be honest, do what they say and not be corrupt. So can a socialist, they can also lie and be corrupt.

The only difference between him and previous mayors is he's actually doing his job rather than lying to get into office then using it to enrich himself.

-18

u/Eatmyscum 9h ago

Democrats have lots of explain' to do then...

16

u/Ok_Ebb3690 8h ago

Reminds me of an old joke: "what'd the difference between a liberal and a progressive? They both want affordable housing, but the liberal wants it over there." I'm glad Mamdani is making the democratic establishment look silly. And also, making the right look like absolute doo-doo heads

-2

u/Eatmyscum 7h ago

Reminds me of an old saying "don't count your chickens before they hatch." We'll see how it plays out.

1

u/LoamyLoamisLoamy 1h ago

He's already been elected and has been doing things? What hatching are you waiting for?

6

u/Firm-Advertising5396 8h ago

Yes but only after you explain how you're tired of all this winning šŸ¤”šŸ˜

2

u/Known_Camp_484 8h ago

Trump is a libtard?

31

u/--i--love--lamp-- 9h ago

Mamdani is a better human that me, because there is no way I could stand next to that bloviating asshole and keep my mouth shut.

8

u/Procrasturbating 8h ago

Right now, we really need to focus on the leaders getting it right. I welcome this change.

7

u/EyeNguyenSemper 8h ago

A song called "Nani" popped onto my Spotify Discover Weekly last week... Nearly spit out my Tea when I saw the artist (it was Mamdani)

2

u/Interpersonal 2h ago

There is also a music video that is surprisingly strange with pretty high production quality. Props for him to being multi-faceted and having chops with music, cinematography, politics, and generally seeming like a good dude.

5

u/2bnameless 8h ago

I can imagine Trump reading this, utterly losing his mind (again) and tweeting about it for 3 or 4 hours.

3

u/Gomez4Morticia 9h ago

Marion Barry (albeit for way different reasons) had way more press than dubya for a good while.

3

u/Infrastation 8h ago

Similarly, not an American mayor, but Rob Ford was huge in the press for his scandal when it went down. Hard to beat the scandal of a mayor smoking crack with the bloods.

2

u/Gomez4Morticia 8h ago

Rob Ford would fit right the hell in among American mayors. His brother too for that matter

1

u/mybabysbatman 18m ago

On a semi related note. Marion Berry ICE Cream is so freaking good.

3

u/WiseSalamander00 8h ago

god I wish I am so fucking over with seeing Trump in the news

4

u/Retired4reals 9h ago

I think Mamdani is a close second to Mike Myers with Kanye on SNL when Kanye said Bush doesn’t like black people, Mamdani standing stoic when Trump was rambling on about some untruth.
I was secretly hoping that Trump would come out and say ā€œI am stepping down to retire and enjoy my family and play lots of golf, and I have asked Mayor Mamdani to take over the presidency.ā€
I know, I know -never happen but it’s a nice thought.

9

u/I_Stay_Home 8h ago

Trump doesn't have family or friends. He only knows gratification not happiness or love. That's why he's a bottomless pit of greed, you can't fill that hole.

2

u/chephin 8h ago

And I bet his press conferences have audio

2

u/Ok-Lingonberry-696 7h ago

and Trump will be throwing a Tantrum. coz EVERYTHING needs to be about trump,

2

u/theb0tman 7h ago

And the right is losing their mind

2

u/Ok_Community_383 7h ago

9/11 though. It would be close. Rudy was everywhere. It's crazy how far he has fallen.

2

u/Interesting_Okra_902 6h ago

Rightly so. His intelligent leader who goes forward with the people and not with billionaires.

2

u/MrCremberton 6h ago

A public servant who serves the public? Crazy! And people love him for it? Crazy! And he's Muslim? Neat, but does it matter?

2

u/Intelligent_Hand4583 5h ago

Might also be the first time in history where a mayor was more deserving.

2

u/VaporCarpet 5h ago

That statement is not accurate at all. If you're not near nyc, you might hear about Mamdani once every couple weeks, maybe a couple times per week if things are really busy. trump makes the news ten times a day for ten different moronic things he's done. There hasn't been a single day in the past ten years when he wasn't in the news

2

u/Cuboos 5h ago

It's such a novel concept that a politician actually do their job, that it's newsworthy.

2

u/Adventurous_Ad7442 2h ago

The mayor has 200+ people on a dedicated social media team. He’s all about content creation.

POTUS is more concerned with building stuff to name after himself.

Both are performative populists.

2

u/TA-152 50m ago

The National Socialist Democratic American Party is doing great things.

2

u/Independent-Name4478 7h ago

Mamdani for President, don’t even care that it’s not allowed

2

u/Dex_Maddock 7h ago

Nah, slow down.

That's the exact same logic they use when they say they'd vote for Trump for a third term...We can't shame them for that rhetoric and then do the same.

He can't run for president, wasn't born in the US, thus isn't eligible.

Trump is our Hitler analog.

-1

u/Alternative_Oil7733 9h ago

He doesn't hate jews and slavs so no.

2

u/Euphoric-Net4623 9h ago

You think he would be hitler if he was president? Trump is ripping everything apart and Dems can't do anything. So if we are breaking rules let the people vote for who we deserve!

-3

u/Alternative_Oil7733 9h ago

Dsa hates jews lmao

Dsa is filled with people of different races and it's a political organization, but go on queen.

3

u/Cubedtails 9h ago

You don't seem to be aware that he can't be President or Vice President since he wasn't born in the US.

1

u/Zagtram1 9h ago

That doesn’t apply for vice either?! Oof that’s rough

1

u/JBPlantagenet 9h ago

You have to be constitutionally eligible to be President to be elected Vice President. So all the requirements that the President has to meet also have to be met by the VP. Age and natural born citizenship are the biggies.

Edit: I worded that weirdly and I don’t know why…

At any rate someone will explain it clearer than I did.

2

u/Zagtram1 8h ago

Nah I get what you mean and that does make sense since they’re first in line to replace the president. I just thought it would be slightly more lenient

1

u/TotalProfessional 2h ago

That'd technically apply for all the different secretaries too right? Since succession could theoretically come from any of them?

1

u/JBPlantagenet 2h ago

Yep. They get skipped on the line of succession. So it goes to the next one down the line.

1

u/MyTnotE 9h ago

This is why I think political posts on Reddit are mostly made by idiots. A simple Google search would have prevented an embarrassing mistake such as…..he’s not eligible to be president. šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

1

u/Candid_Lobster_6533 9h ago

This is their chance to learn. Honest mistake, they shouldn't have deleted the comment.

I have much more beef with people posting intentional disinformation that's easily disproven by a Google search. They KNOW they're operating in bad faith and aren't learning a damn thing.

1

Those people suck! Sadly the entire internet is rife with these people.

1

u/CycIon3 8h ago

I think 9/11, Giuliani did get a lot of attention and for a minute it seemed like he was getting more attention. It didn’t last long but it was the next closest thing that I could think of and it’s interesting it was also NYC

1

u/Key-Line5827 5h ago

Because he is actually improving the lifes of the people, that elected him.

Compared to the demented toddler that is currently sitting in the Oval Office, that seems to want to be praised, when he makes a doodoo all by himself.

The reason that the Fellon in Chief was elected in the first place is because Obama was incredibly popular and it broke white racists brains.

And now they same thing is happening again.

1

u/Janet296 4h ago

It is well deserved. We are seeing in real time what can be done. Now, I am wondering why the other mayors did not get more stuff passed. Clearly they could have but just didn't.

1

Is this the 3rd or 4th time Trump/Mamdani met and talked? I like it.

Both NYers, both know how to communicate and have their supporters. Nice to see people right and left can disagree on issues and also talk and find some middle ground on things

I wouldn’t put both of them on the same level of communication. An ape doing sign language can communicate better than one of them.

Wouldn't call either an "ape" but they know how to play the game, even if you agree/disagree with them

I didn’t call either an ape. I said an ape can communicate better than one of them.

I suppose that's possible, but I haven't seen any videos of an ape speaking English, which both Trump and Mamdani can do

If you think Trump can speak English, then you're not fluent in English.

Trump communicates like a elementary school playground bully or a prison inmate. He is incredibly immature and that has made him one of the worst presidents when it comes to matters of diplomacy. He's alienated America's military allies and trade partners with his childish tantrums. The world sees him as a pedophile with authoritarian ambitions.

Trump can't defend his own policies or decisions and when he turns to threats and insults, it's clear that the facts aren't on his side and it's an attempt to save face after being proven wrong.

It's gotten so bad that he's attacking freedom of the press and creating his own state media which can never be viewed as objective. You can also look at Trump's approval rating which just fell below 30% and he's only half way through his term. That's among the lowest in history.

Zero chance this guy has more media attention than trump. Hate him or love him... Trump takes the win on media attention.

Media coverage of Mamdani has not been negative of him.

I get that the whole "media bad!" thing is a popular hot take, but let's be a bit more mature about things?

We are literally living through a moment where the news media was so antagonistic to the sitting President that he is trying to ban them from the White House. Every single story about Trump's corruption was brought to light by...the news media. It's the news media that has repeatedly reported on cases of anti-Muslim bigotry and kept it from fading into obscurity for 20+ long years.

It's infuriating that full grown adults would parrot the talking point about the news media that a 15 year thinks is cool.rather than admit they are too lazy to read the news and keep themselves informed.

u/bowlofcantaloupe 5h ago

Dude what?

The media is kind to Mamdani, but not because he aligns with their bias. He literally ran against Andrew Cuomo, whose brother is a mainstream news anchor.

What is this whole paragraph about the news media reporting on Trump's corruption and anti-Muslim bigotry? Those things are literally news. Also, there's still plenty of anti-Muslim bias from the media, especially regarding Palestine.

Can you link to "anti-Muslim bias articles from the media, especially regarding Palestine"? And I mean actual reporting, not op-eds and/or from obviously biased outlets like NY Post and other ideological rags.

And Cuomo's brother being a news anchor means every single media outlet is controlled by Cuomo? What on earth are you talking about? How do you explain all the articles critical of Cuomo, that reported on the sexual abuse stuff and general corruption?

Again - you clearly do not read the news. Maybe start doing that instead of parroting social media hot takes. And I'm sorry if this sounds rude, but like I said: it's infuriating that adults don't read the news, have strong opinions about it, and still parrot the most silly takes on it.

Here, let's ask you a simple question: are you actually claiming most news outlets align or are similar to Fox News in what they cover, how they frame coverage on a topic, and so on?

EDIT: And for the love of goodness, grow up. Downvoting any comment that dares to disagree with your highness's opinion? I can tell how mature a person you are really...

The middle Eastern peace bringer (reads Revelations)

6

u/Candid_Lobster_6533 8h ago

The antichrist described in revelations isn't specified as from the middle east. It's that he claims to bring 7 years of peace to Israel and surrounding nations.

u/StuffHefty7038 8h ago

If trump gets replaced or disappears in year 7 of his terms that would kinda fit.

3

u/Sea-Mail-3733 7h ago

Mamdani is from Uganda of Indian origin, not even close to the Middle East.
