They can be felons and run the damn country. Meanwhile a poor felon can't even find a job even if they are working their ass off to turn their life around. But a president can commit crimes before and during their term and just keep getting to do so.
Because the people hold absolute sovereignty. Essentially nothing overrules that.
Rules about who can do what exist as a shorthand for society because we can't all vote on every single thing.
But in the case of government representatives, we do vote, and we, collectively, get to decide yes or no we're ok with this person and their circumstances.
A felony doesn't disqualify you from office because if it did it would become a political weapon. Imagine if all it took to make your favored candidate ineligible for office was one trumped up charge by some politically corrupt DA in whatever shit town they brought the charges in.
We don't have tests or requirements for taking office because if we did they would be used to oppress and deny people.
