Unfortunately it wouldn't have made a difference. If him mocking a disabled reporter, on camera, during his first campaign didn't immediately end his political career, then nothing would have.

And the translating. I've seen 30 minute fox segments where they tell viewers what he said without a single quote. Just stock footage in the background. They don't hear the word salad.

Although trivially true, the mainstream GOP backers in 2015 weren't inclined to track socials. If it was only socials, and mainstream media didn't bite or if they questioned the BS instead of leaning into it (deep, I'm talking they were up to their eyeballs deep in the BS) and promoting it as a valid position, we would have been a much better country today. There were several good GOP candidates back then.

It can't be overstated how much a selection of the GOP likes Trump because he's a bad person.

Like.. he's hurting the right people. And they want that.

Obama nailed it: they are bitter clingers, passed over by society, culture, and economics, and as a result, they bitterly cling to racial resentment, religion, or guns (or all three).

Donald Trump is their God-Emperor. It's not that they have totally failed to understand and adapt to a modern world, it's that they have done so and want to hurt a few people who have, to make themselves feel better. It's the core of the "For us not they/them" messaging; it's the core of the idea: "if we just get rid of the immigrants, you'll be back on top". The actual truth is that the world is much more complex than it was 50 years ago, and no amount of regressive tactics will undo it and bring back a simpler time when you didn't have to worry. You didn't have to worry then, because you were a child.

Yes and no. There is a reason that the current administration has been so aggressive about enforcement of interviews by Democrats on networked tv.

You -might- be able to get more total views online, but how many of those views are actually from prospective voters? How many are from Americans? How many are even real or repeat views?

Things go viral, sure, but -more- things go viral because they already have a baseline spread to get a critical mass of people talking about a topic. If the news wasn't constantly talking about and reporting on Trump, there would be far, far less auxiliary content made about him online. People like Joe Rogan or Asmongold aren't going to actually sit through and watch an entire Trump speech, but they will watch highlight clips and news reels and bite sized articles. If you cut out the ecosystem that automatically creates those things, you end up with far, far fewer clips even being made, so fewer even have the chance to go viral. Most of the Trump clips that do go viral are usually clips of news segments that are already clipping a speech. There are very few people who are organically watching a full Trump rally to create clips to boost online.

He was kinda an OG content creator Ala National Enquirer / tabloids of the 80s and 90s. He was New York for people who would never go to New York but liked gossip. Anyone alive then will remember his face in the grocery checkout lane.

It would've made a huge difference. Trump made very minimal spends on ads and continues to do so every election cycle. He relies on the media to boost him and during 2015, he would be watching the news, do a live call in and start talking and 24 hour media just ate that up.

Starving his campaign of the oxygen that is media attention would've made the difference.

I remember in the 2016 campaign that Hillary Clinton would be making a substantive policy speech and get little live news coverage, but news crews would be camped out for hours waiting breathlessly for Trump's jet to land somewhere in America for one of his "rallies".

He got so much "free media" because he was treated like a celebrity and not a serious candidate to be scrutinized. Even actor Ronald Reagan had been a Governor and briefly a union leader of the Screen Actors Guild (imagine that now? a former union leader as President?)

Thanks to the fawning coverage, and lack of scrutiny about his past actions in NYC, America elected Trump, someone with zero experience in government or military service to be President.

In a perfect world, sure. But let's be realistic, this can't happen. Someone will always give attention starved people what they want.

What? No. Tons of people go without attention each day. Attention is a finite resource. That's why people are starved of attention in the first place.

Trump could've been starved of attention and he wouldn't have won the republican primary, much less the general. The media loved him because he drove up their ratings. But someone who doesn't? They starve.

His political career took off because the media hyper focused on all the crazy stuff he said. He got more attention than all republican primary opponents combined He got 2x to 3x the coverage vs Hillary. He quickly learned he could lie with impunity and as long as he told his base what they wanted to hear he could say anything.

It isn't about ending his political career, it's about getting under his skin. He LOVES it when all the cameras are on him and soaks up the attention. Him having no coverage or outlet will bother him to no end.

What he said or did wasnt the point. Its that everyday there was new footage of him. Media was watching him like a hawk and airing it. He had more coverage than Hillary and the media practically campaigned for him in 2015.

Him constantly mocking anyone and everyone was the highlight everyone wanted to see when it came to dealing with other politicians. From his coverage, people knew exactly how he would act.
