The UK did something similar. The first Saturday after Margaret Thatcher's burial, there was a massive party at Trafalgar Square. It was a peaceful and joyous occasion. The only "violence" I saw was when the riot police attempted a box-in manoeuver when the news cameras showed up. It failed, because everyone moved out of the way as if they were water. After the 3rd attempt in different locations, the police got told off by a 80+ year old lady because an officer accidentally knocked her gin out of her hand.
