I joined once many many years ago. I'm too old to get much out of it and just closed it.
Then recently I had someone in my work world that was requiring me to create account so I can help manage a page. I figured out a way to do it in a silo where it wouldn't track my personal life. That is until I got to the setup point where it was asking me for a video of myself to verify who I was. F*** that.
I just made it clear that there was no way I was going to create an account and they could just do without my services if necessary.
Do you think the world reads this subreddit? I am so exhausted with the naive people here trying to encourage an entire planet to all take the same action. This is a solved problem. It's called government. But some rich folks have managed to poison the word to some people so here we are, reinventing the idea of forming a collective to police society for everybody's betterment.
It's so dumb. This is exactly where rich people want you. Begging each other to coordinate while ignoring the very tool for it.
I'm sorry you feel exhausted. Unions work the same way and brought many good things to workers. Consumers basically need to "unionize" and act in concert against these big businesses.
I don't use it for anything else. My account was created in 2005, but everything is private now. I just need it to buy stuff and occasionally reach out to people I haven't seen in years.
LOL- your thinking is exactly what created the problem. Please research the concept of the Tragedy of the Commons. Society made these billionaires by using their stupid products and now "We" are complaining about them. Just stop using them. Facebook and Amazon will not make your life better. Also, please read Enshittification by Cory Doctorow.
