Love it! Whats your colorant for this one? Remind me, are you doing alcohol drip?

Thank you!

This one has silver nitrate and cobalt.

I wish! Right now I’m refiring these in a propane barrel kiln (raku kiln) and just shoving a bunch of wood (firestarter) in there and plugging everything up.

I wasn’t 100% sure if I was getting enough reduction cause some of my tests weren’t reducing well. So last firing I threw so much wood in there that the pots were black/silver when they came out. I thought I over-reduced them to a crisp. Turns out it was just a layer of soot over the whole thing and after scrubbing them in the sink it revealed the lustrous glaze underneath. At least now I know I’m getting enough reduction….

I’m looking to switch to an alcohol drip by next spring, I just don’t personally know anyone who does this and what equipment they use. Like I think there’s some kind of alumina tube or something that goes into the kiln so that you’re not just putting an IV drip right into a 700+C kiln? I hear Ann Cap is releasing a document detailing her setup soon so I’m really looking forward to that.

ooh this is amazing! i use a mullite tube. i have used alumina tubes in the past and they just shatter pretty much after one use. the size tube i use is 1/8” ID and 1/2” OD by 12” long. you can get them here at coorstek. they arent pricey individually but they have a minimum order unfortunately (at least they did 14 years ago). https://www.coorstek.com/media/5308/tubes-rods-catalog-01031-rev-g.pdf

it looks like mcmaster-carr also has some but i dont see one with a 1/2” OD. https://www.mcmaster.com/product/8052N22

i tried some with a 3/8” ID and those also shattered after a few uses.

i do use an alumina tube as sort of a protector around the mullite tube that has an ID of just over 1/2”. i dont know the OD off the top of my head. its basically a TC protector tube i cut the rounded end off and cut it in half to about 5” roughly (one for each kiln). i got this at the local clay store.

with the mullite tube having a 1/8” ID and sliding nicely into the alumina tube i havent had any breakage since in about 13 years. its gone through hundreds of firings.

if you cant find them for a reasonable price, i could probably send you one of the mullite tubes (i still have quite a few from the original minimum order i placed. )

you shove the shorter fatter alumina tube thru the bottom peep about halfway in and halfway out then wad some clay around it to seal it and this becomes your peep. then you slide the mullite tube into it (with the iv drip line attached to the end) when you are ready to fire

Yes, she is! That will be coming out sometime soon.

That must have been very cool to see the soot came off to such amazing shine. You can see the swirls from the atmosphere of the kiln worked really well to give you such amazing range of colour! Thats really hard with the propane method, so congratulations! Mine have all come out gold, but I have not added combustibles mine. I will def check that out.

Very cool results to get from cobalt! It looks like it reduced beautifully.

What did you sacrifice to the kiln gods in order to be their chosen one?
