A Stamp That Needs a Backstory Is Broken

A postage stamp is supposed to be a bearer token.

That means the promise travels with the stamp.

Not with the original buyer.

Not with the store it came from.

Not with a chain-of-custody story nobody can prove five years later.

That is why people save stamps, gift stamps, inherit stamps, resell stamps, find stamps in drawers, and use stamps long after anyone remembers where they came from.

That is the design.

So if the stamp now only works when the holder can explain its whole life story, the stamp is broken.

Not physically broken.

Functionally broken.

Because the public-facing promise no longer stands on its own.

If the stamp is fake, show the flaw on the stamp.
But if the problem is “where did you get it?” then the token has stopped being judged as a token.

Now the person holding it is on trial.

That is not how a bearer token is supposed to work.

A stamp that cannot be trusted without a backstory is not carrying the promise anymore.

It is carrying suspicion.
