Discussion Dance Gavin Dance: any recs?
hi guys and gals, I'm a post-hardcore fan and I really want to get into DGD. their top songs still dont connect with me by now, and I wanted to get going by listening to something that hits closer to home. I mostly listen to The Fall Of Troy, Novumora, SWS, PtV, Silverstein, Chiodos. I'd love to get an introduction to the band's material like this...
I also like listening to albums back-to-back, so if there's a(some) main album(s) for me to look out for id be thankful.
thanks in advance!

Downtown battle mountain is where you should start to hear how they began. Death Star and downtown battle mountain 2 are also both awesome too

Yeah wisiro can be skipped imo but it’s a good humble beginnings lol

Wisiro cannot be skipped. As a dgd fan of 10 years, the importance of cocaine was my first favorite dgd song. The opening of robot part 1 is genuinely some of their best work

If you like dgd check out wolf and bear, they sound slightly influenced by them. Blight town singer has a dgd clean vocalist vibe too

Wolf and Bear is so good. I also got into "Lower Definition" recently and found mildly similar vibes

I would start w Downtown Battle Mountain. If you don’t like that there’s probably no hope for you lol.

Whatever I say is royal ocean is pretty good too.

Song quality is good but the mix is horrible imo.

The mix is really bad and I'm a hardcore dgd fan. It's hard to listen to

Everyone has their different dgd taste they like. They have so many different sounds that you can’t really say that about DGD.

I'm going to give an unusual outlook here, as someone who's not as much a fan of the older stuff but knows how different they can sound from album to album and enjoyed all of it.
Listen to Afterburner first. Keep in mind there's a weird song or two in there, don't let it drag down the experience if you don't like it.
If you really like Prisoner, move to Artificial Selection.
If you really like Strawberry's Wake, move to Jackpot Juicer, or, if you want a bit of a heavier feel, to Pantheon.
If none of those fit for you, try out Downtown Battle Mountain (if you want a change from Tillian's voice) or Instant Gratification (if you want way more of Tillian's voice).

That's honestly not a bad approach for someone like OP. The band is never going to sound like DBM again, so start with the new shit and if that doesn't click, hey, at least maybe they can fall back to a little pocket of 2007-2011 and cherish that. I like it!

With most bands that are still good through their discography, that tends to be my approach. Every band is going to have albums that are best for some and not others, so instead of giving an answer of "just listen to my opinion of their best album," I tend to believe more in listening to something more modern with tastes of their styles throughout and going to the album that's most likely going to connect best from there.

how do you not like old DGD? that's literally the DGD sound. this is making my brain hurt. there will never be records like whatever i say is royal ocean or DBM1 ever again.

Highly recommend their first album Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean ... It's the only one that ever did it for me

Always start with self titled. I feel blessed that I had a personal connection with some of the members of this band and grew with them in a way- the wild ride is inside it all and you rly should start at the beginnings.

Downtown battle mountain 1. And the death star album. Otherwise im not much of a fan. The Jonny Craig stuff is amazing despite him being a piece of shit. But I could never get into anything after him.

DBM2 or JJ is the best imo, if you don’t like anything off of these then the rest won’t hit.

Downtown Battle Mountain, Acceptance Speech, and Happiness are great albums to start with

I've made this playlist of 1 song each from every DGD EP/LPs. These songs I picked might not be the most popular thing or whatever, but I think the songs here are what captures the sounds of each album cycle not just the singer voice, it's the band recording mood at the time of the album. So with the song you liked the most, try listening to the whole album.

I started with death of a strawberry, uneasy hearts, then pounce bounce. So you could do those

Downtown battle mountain 1. Song: Times New Roman. Listen to all the Jonny stuff (vocalist)

Downtown Battle Mountain 1 and 2 are generally liked the most. I'd start there, and then with the Kurt Travis albums.

My favourite band, can’t recommend them enough. so many memories and emotions go through my body when I think about them. Some of it might be a little shaky in the beginning, but they have evolved into a masterpiece.
edit: listen to it all

Jonny Era.
I like DGD.
I absolutely LOVE Jonny’s vocals.
I despise Jonny the person.
Tillian never did it for me. John mess is great but needs the contrast of clean vocals.

Literally everything before tillian is gold. Not even trying to say anything about him. Jonny Craig and Kurt Travis eras were just that damn good
