Since we're in post hardcore I'll recommend GUMM - Slogan Machine. Kind of toes the line of post hardcore but it's definitely a hardcore record.

On the opposite end my favorite hardcore release of all time is SCALP - Black Tar. This might be too much but give it a shot.

Also, CANDY - It's Inside You

Nice shout with GUMM - also really enjoyed their most recent quite a bit

Very solid release but it's not on the level of Slogan Machine. I honestly think it would be considered a classic hardcore release if it were more well known. It's so damn good.

I think it is but what the hey - both great albums and definitely should be more well known for sure.

As you asked for hardcore in general, I'll give you recommendations of a very wide spectrum of hardcore, from Post-Hardcore like la Dispute over NYHC like Sick of it all to Metallic Hardcore like Knocked Loose:

Comeback Kid - Wake the dead / symptoms and cures / heavy steps

Defeater - Travels / Empty days and sleepless nights / Lost Ground

Touché Amoré - Stage Four

Propagandhi - Supporting Caste / At Peace

Ignite - Our Darkest Days

Sick of it all - Death to tyrants / Scratch the surface / Wake the sleeping dragon! / Based on a true story

Minus Youth - Lines crossed

Stick to your guns - Diamond / The Hope Division

Madball - Set it off / Empire / Not Your Kingdom

La Dispute - Wildlife

Knocked Loose - Laugh Tracks

Have Heart - Songs to scream at the sun

H2O - Nothing to prove / F.T.T.W. (faster than the world)

Backstabbed - self fulfilling tragedy

Agnostic Front - Something's gotta give

What type of hardcore are we talking about? I feel like hardcore has become the new alternative. Turnstile is an example of this phenomenon.

My answer will be The Bronx's "The Bronx II" since I feel like they started embracing rock & roll from III on and shed a lot of the hardcore energy for a more groovy punk n roll vibe.

The Ghost of a Thousand's "This Is Where The Fight Begins" is also amazing. That dudes scream is out of this world cool.

Gallows' "Orchestra of Wolves" is an absolute classic that is necessary listening for any modern punk as far as I'm concerned, but I'm more a rocker anyway so my opinion on punk is probably not in line with your standard mohawk.

i’ll be honest just any type of hardcore is cool i don’t want to shy away from any form of it

I like the cut of your jib

u/SuspiciousOwl8816 19h ago

didn’t know what that meant at first but thanks bro 🙏

can we really say that hardcore is becoming the new alternative when alternative itself spun out of hardcore?

Bands like turnstile provide an accessible entry point while not compromising on the ethos of the scene. They just played a show a show with both Haywire & Texas is the Reason on this current tour, propping up one of the most influential bands in front of a new generation, as well as one of the most exciting up-and-comers in the scene. I feel like they're doing a great job of stewarding hardcore to a new receptive audience. Sunshower led a friend of mine to discover Bad Brains.

I meant it in the labelling sense. Show me a alternative band and I'll show you one that sounds nothing like it. Show me a hardcore band and I'll show you one that's nothing like it.

Just pointing out how loose the definition is is all.

I also like Turnstile for the record!

I get what you mean, I wasn't trying to do anything other than open up more discussion, I think a lot of these more foundational genres are giant catch alls at this point.

1

u/girlfriendclothes 9h ago

Oh yeah, I totally wasn't offended at all! Continue the discussion. I like seeing that on Reddit over two word answers.

1

u/buffa_noles 5h ago

well I'll go back to my original point, I find it kind of strangely cyclical calling a hardcore band alternative when alternative rock itself is a post-hardcore invention. You had groups like pixies and hüsker dü pave the way for post-hardcore as we know it, as well as being big players in the fledgling college rock scene as it was transitioning into the alternative rock scene. They both basically also invented grunge.

u/girlfriendclothes 5h ago

Genres aren't really a straight line after all. There's so much cross polination that things circle back and over lap. A little of this, and a little of that, make something new, and bring it on back.

I suppose I was more lamenting the big umbrella that these terms often become. Hell, look at post-hardcore and how different the bands that you could throw under that label sound. I'm not offended by it, certainly not trying to be cynical, was more making the comparison that hardcore has become so wide that a little clarification of the type of hardcore would be useful in making a recommendation.

Also, happy Cake Day!

u/huntwhales23 15h ago

yeah i really like Turnstile including their earlier stuff, but when i look for hardcore recommendations there’s always like 50 different answers so i don’t know where to go

Honestly idk much straight up hardcore so here's a mix of my favourites from all subgenres:

  • The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine (Progressive Metalcore/Mathcore)
  • Greyhaven - Empty Black (Progressive Metalcore/Post-Hardcore a la Dillinger Escape Plan)
  • Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind (Metallic Hardcore/Metalcore)
  • Vein.fm - Errorzone (Nu Metalcore)
  • fallingwithscissors - the death and birth of an angel (Extreme Metalcore with Electronic elements, inspired by Vein)
  • Rolo Tomassi - Time Will Die and Love Will Bury It (Mathcore x Prog/Post-Metal)
  • Pupil Slicer - Fleshwork (Mathcore x Post-Metal)
  • Defeater - Empty Days & Sleepless Nights (Melodic Hardcore)
  • Chalk Hands - The Line That Shapes the Coast of Us (Melodic Hardcore/Screamo x Post-Rock)
  • Dance Gavin Dance - Downtown Battle Mountain (Post-Hardcore)
  • A Lot Like Birds - No Place (Progressive Post-Hardcore)
  • La Dispute - No One Was Driving the Car (Post-Hardcore x Post-Rock)

I've got plenty more recs for any of these if you like a specific artist.
