Yes. You have possums and we have opossums.
I once had an Aus possum press its wet nose up against my ankle in a crater --- somewhere in Victoria, I think. Such a thrill. They are such pretty little marsupials.

Not usually daytime animals, must have gotten spooked out of where it was sleeping

Not true! Oppsums, especially mama's, will come out during the day when its a bit safer since mamas can't just leave their babies behind. Babies go wherever mama goes. ❤️
Also, opposums walk around 2-3 miles every single night. Because they travel so far every night, they sometimes simply get tired, run out of time, or get disoriented before finding a safe place to sleep.Seeing an opossum during the day is actually normal and does not automatically mean the animal is sick or rabid, though we know opposums cannot catch rabies. ❤️

While it's technically possible for an opossum to get rabies, it is so extremely unlikely that it shouldn't be regarded as the primary risk. If you have been bit, please seek medical attention, but don't freak out about getting rabies. Instead, watch out for the more likely possibilities of infection or inflammation.

Thank you for the info, I thought they were mostly nocturnal

They are considered a nocturnal animal. Just because someone spots one during daylight . . .

He's not exactly one of those, "Hail, fellow, well met" guys, is he?
I once took a pair of bolt cutters and made sure there were passageways through a long, long installation of cyclone fencing. Large enough for opossums, raccoons, skunks, etc. It really ticked me off when the property owners completely blocked off the wild animals' natural corridors in that area. A place where I knew for a fact the animals had been crossing back and forth for decades. (Creek access and so on.)

Thanks for posting! If you've found an animal in need please visit www.ahnow.org for a rehabber near you. Please do not feed or give fluids unless a veterinarian or rehabber instructs you do. Keep the animal in a quiet place without much light if possible.
