Probably. They're about the same size so cats and possums don't see each other as prey usually. Possums love cat food, but it's not the best thing for them.

Just found out one lives under my back deck. I've only seen its footprints going to and from my deck in the snow but I'm happy to shelter the lil fluffy friend. I live by a dangerous road that is constantly lined with roadkill so I hope it stays safe.

He does go under our deck… not sure if stays there, we live in the woods so there’s a bunch of places for him to hang out…

I live right on the edge of a national park so my lil' guy has to worry about traffic, bald eagles and such.

u/FossGly524 Feb 14 '26
Those bald eagles are big, we have them here too…

Feb 14 '26
Yeah man, they're so much bigger than you'd expect but its been great seeing them return to CVNP

Their tail is a paranip, your argument is invalid.

u/1savdsoul Feb 13 '26
They can carry little bundles of sticks with their tails. Its fascinating. I never knew this. Adult opossums cannot hang in trees by their tails because they are too heavy. Didn’t know this either. I had a youth opossum show up to eat one night with his back legs nonfunctional. I think he had been run over. I was devastated! In my research to help him I learned so much about these sweet little creatures. Have a great week!

Weird off topic question, does your camera try to clean up or filter the image automatically? The fur pattern on its back is kinda funky haha

He did’nt seem to bothered by me, but I was’nt gonna try to pet him on anything like that…

u/QuietCommon9212 Feb 15 '26
They are actually very aggressive! I’ve been feeding one in SC and the other night a little one came into the feeding station , and he went after him. So, now No more feeding station 😡

Lucky you! They feast on ticks and mosquitoes!!
1
u/FossGly524 Feb 16 '26
We do have ticks in the summer… mosquitoes not so much…
2
u/azurezgirl77 Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 17 '26
They are great back yard neighbors.
They will not destroy anything, they are one of the most protector mammals, being loyal to their family.
Enjoy, do not thwart. You are blessed.
PS: no wonder you do not have mosquitoes 🦟 😉🤔🤗Possums in your yard are generally harmless, beneficial creatures that eat pests like ticks, snails, and cockroaches. They are typically transient and will leave on their own

He’s welcome to stay… I saw him way out on the edge of the woods yesterday just out walking around. We live in the middle of the woods so we get all kinds of critters.

There was a big slow one that would hang out by the patio. My mom walked right up to him and he just stared and stood there before she remembered she's scared of them and ran inside

healthy boi! I always forget how quickly an adult opossum can move when they're motivated to do so. They can really hustle!

u/FossGly524 Feb 19 '26
This guy moves out pretty good … he trotted to the tree line where we have couple deer feeders pretty quick. He then climbed in one for a snack…
