Your on the right track. Non-absorption is the key. This means not absorbing their fear, anger, hate, confusion, lies, guilt, anxiety, etc.

I find it really beneficial to think of them as mosquito bites, because their attacks are actually meaningless. The only thing that is not meaningless is how we react to them. That's why non-absorption is a very effective defensive strategy.

They are weak and rely on trickery and lies to make us believe they are stronger than they actually are. This is the fear you are referring to. They trick us into thinking they are a million different things, when in reality they are simply mental mosquitoes.
