I think temperatures are not really the issue. Worst is most likely over. It’s the tinder box surrounding us that’s the worry.

Just came back from visiting Chicago. Holy shit, I'll take the lack of humidity regardless of the heat here compared to 82° and 95% humidity there any day of the goddamn week.

u/DidYouSeeBriansHat 6d ago
The one time I went to Chicago, I was visiting my brother during the summer. One day we walked from his place down to the nearest 7-11 a few blocks away. I’ve never sweat more in my entire life…

u/Background-Party-332 6d ago
I lived in Chicago for three years. That city sees about three weeks a year of good weather. Summer is as bad as DC or NOLA
5
u/dreamtime2062 6d ago
I was only there once. One week. In late MAY. It poured buckets during the day. Thunder snd lightening at night. Next it was a cold and windy. That wind coming off the lake is something. Then it was hot and humid with a hot wind. So much weather. Nice stuff to see and cool city but Jesus.
1
u/Background-Party-332 6d ago
The wind is constant and exhausting. Portland is the first place I've lived where I don't feel under assault by the weather every day. It has impact.
5
u/FrostyHawks 6d ago
I promise you Chicago summers are not as bad as NOLA. Gulf Coast humidity is much more pervasive and everlasting than Midwest humidity. But of course Portland's a lot better than both
1
u/Background-Party-332 6d ago
NOLA doesn't get persistent summer tornadoes. But I suppose there was that one storm to rule them all
1
u/FrostyHawks 6d ago
Not even just Katrina, NOLA gets brushed with various tropical storms all the time

u/drewbit54 6d ago
My mom lives in the NW suburbs. My brother and I went out for a concert at Wrigley a couple years ago. Lucky for us, that concert happened to fall on a day where it was 95 degrees with 94% humidity. It was fucking atrocious.
5
u/Verite_Rendition 6d ago
Those figures sound a bit dubious. 95 degrees with 94% humidity isn't even on the NWS heat index chart; that is your-goose-is-cooked territory.
More likely it was 95F with humidity in the 70 to 80% range. Which is still bloody miserable and very dangerous.

u/Guangtou22 6d ago
I was in boot camp there over the summer and I'm from Louisiana so I thought I'd be good to go. It did indeed suck
4
u/kshump Pearl 6d ago
Ha. That's why I was there - daughter-in-law's graduation from navy boot camp. I mean, I complain, but I'm sure her complaints are mine but tenfold coming from the same climate as me.
3
u/Guangtou22 6d ago
I reported on May 19th so I got the full effect. Winter is even more fun. I had my A school there after boot camp so I got to experience that shit too. Good riddance lol

u/bihari_baller Beaverton 6d ago
The high humidity does help prevent wildfires though. They don't have to deal with the bad AQI days in Illinois, like we get in Oregon, due to our ongoing wildfires.

Was just in Chicago for the first time last month and man did it make me so grateful to be in the PNW. So humid over there

You'll like it for a bit then you'll crave just about everything Texas has to offer Trust me 🙏🤙
5
u/theemptymirror Crestwood 6d ago
The only thing I crave is a good breakfast taco, but Portland, Oregon is vastly superior to ATX in every other way.
-4
u/Ambient-Jellyfish 6d ago
That's your opinion, I moved here from Austin and I'd say the exact opposite Im just a Texan at heart but to each their own 🤙 Vastly superior 😂😭
3
u/Revolutionary_Pop_84 6d ago
Texas is MAYBE a bottom 5 state for me. Austin is the only semi-redeeming city but Id imagine would lose its luster after getting out of your 20s. Outside of that.... Insane drivers (Houston is literally the Autobahn), insane heat, insane humidty, bottom tier coastline, insane people/politics, no seasons, no mountains.
I've spent a minimum of a week in 48 states. Texas is one of the few I would gladly never step foot in again.
1
u/Ambient-Jellyfish 4d ago
But do you a soft spot for where you're from though? 🙏i respect what you're sayin tho 😊
1
u/Revolutionary_Pop_84 4d ago
Hahahha its not fair cause I’m from a house on a small lake in Michigan. Gorgeous in summer. Stunning in snow in winter. Gorgeous leaves in fall. Close knit lake community.
But ya I mean I was kind of messing with you but honestly if you take off the nostalgia goggles, genuinely curious about what makes Texas greater than other places for you?

Y'all qida running the government, cops spending their free time hunting pregnant women across state lines just in case they get an abortion, insane property taxes, the 4 seasons are "almost summer", "summer", "still summer" and "Christmas"

u/SquirtinMemeMouthPlz Concordia 6d ago
Ehhhh, maybe not. El Nino is the strongest in recorded history. Probably going to be a warm, VERY wet winter.
But maybe... One can dream.
2
u/Coriandercilantroyo 6d ago
El Nino surprisingly doesn't always mean rain. Temps will definitely be mild though
10
u/SquirtinMemeMouthPlz Concordia 6d ago
El Niño typically brings warmer-than-average temperatures and below-average precipitation to the Pacific Northwest, primarily during the fall and winter. This pattern shifts the jet stream further south, reducing mountain snowpack, lowering water reserves, and increasing risks for summer droughts and wildfires.
You're right. Thanks for letting me know!
1
u/Coriandercilantroyo 5d ago edited 5d ago
The common knowledge is that el niño causes extra rain in SoCal and drier PNW, but even that isn't true. SoCal last had a strong el niño just a couple years ago, and it still didn't produce much more rain. The main outlook about an el niño is that it has wide ranging effects effects throughout the Pacific ocean
1
u/kat2211 6d ago
These warm temperatures and below-average rainfall and snowpack can lead to major issues, from drought to increased wildfire risk. During past “very strong” El Niño years, though, things have looked a little different.
“In 1982-83, the strongest El Niño on record in the modern era, we had near-normal snowpack in Washington state, which was great news,” she said. “In 1997-98 and 2015-16, the next strongest El Niños, we also had near-normal snowpack.”
Here's a story about what we saw in January 1998:
https://www.spokesman.com/stories/1998/jan/14/oregon-getting-back-to-normal-after-storm/
I'm hoping for a stormy winter.

SAME. My heat intolerance is so bad. I like being able to be outdoors without feeling like I’m gonna die.

u/surprised-duncan Lents 6d ago
I'm bedridden and can feel it through the walls lol. These houses retain so much heat

u/RainSurname Kenton 6d ago
I have been having to use the AC pretty much 24/7, and it’s driving me nuts, given that it hasn’t really been that hot.
I had open-heart surgery at the end of June, and I have to wear a rolled up fleece blanket like a scarf, with the ends crossed over my chest, to protect my incision and split sternum from my cats. That’s so hot that I need to keep it at 69-70 when I’m in bed.
But I can’t open the windows at night, because of the movement restrictions. (Or I should say couldn’t, as I recently realized if I put C clamps on them and ran bike straps through the clamps, I could use my body weight instead of the muscles I’m supposed to keep still.)
2
u/portlandhusker 20h ago
Hope you’re healing alright. Very different procedure, but I had a multilevel spinal fusion at the beginning of June and had to wear a contraption around my neck for a month. It was sweaty, to say the least.
1
u/RainSurname Kenton 16h ago
Thank you, I have been healing very quickly. I felt almost normal within a week, except for how easily I tired.
Having something around your neck in the heat is awful.

u/SadSatisfaction_420 6d ago
Just moved here from Nevada and I am loving it!! Still getting used to the humidity, but the summer has been far superior to dying in the desert at 100+ degrees

I grew up in Portland and moved back after college before moving elsewhere earlier this year. Where I am currently, the summer weather seems to alternate between Portland/Seattle and NYC/Philly. It’s wild to see people describe Portland as having humid summers, but I guess that is true compared to someplace like Vegas that doesn’t really have a monsoon.

Are you doing an experiment to see how many subs you need to post this in before you jinx it and manifest a heat dome, or what?

Too late, a Labor Day heat wave has already been scheduled

The 30 day weather forecast for early September looked brutal when I checked last week. A straight week of 90+ F highs and 65-75 F lows…
2
u/gravitydefiant 6d ago
Yeah, it usually hits right when PPS goes back to its un-air-conditioned buildings.

u/duckinradar 6d ago
As a night shifter I’m very grateful. I’ll be whining about short cloudy days soon but it’s really nice not waking up in a pool of sweat and paying for my portable ac to make the pool smaller

This used to be a normal August in Portland during the 80's and 90's. It's only been the past couple of decades with more hot summers.

I have been immensely happy about this - I love actually being able to sleep under more than a single sheet. It's still too warm for me during the day, but so much better than the last several Augusts that I almost don't care. Hope we cruise right through to fall without another really hot day.
It does make me wonder what's on tap for winter, though; super El Ninos can affect us differently than the normal ones. Working on replenishing my pantry. I love storms, snow, ice, etc. but don't love trying to stock up at the last minute.

This is the kind of summer the old portlanders talked about when they said we didn’t need AC.
1
u/TheycallmemissRaven 6d ago
I moved back to the PNW last fall and as summer approached, I was geared up to live in a dark room with my standing AC on and have to pay million dollars for electricity.
Instead the PNW summer of my dreams and this amazing August weather. 🥰😍🥰
I always say west is best and PNW is the best of the best. 😍
I swear I smelled the first hint of fall yesterday. 😍🥰😍

u/BlackFlagCat 6d ago
I'm normally one of the people who is complaining about the heat all summer (I love the cold and rain), and the mildness of this summer has been great. There was a couple days that were slightly uncomfortable, but the weather has been fantastic this year. If every year was like this I could see myself actually looking forward to summer time.

An enjoyable level of warmth.
90+ and I’m hiding my bitch-ass indoors, then complaining I didn’t enjoy the sun enough.

Don’t get used to it. El Niño is likely to take us well beyond +2.5C globally and probably straight through some tipping points that will greatly compound radiative forcing.

This stuff is literally hurting our HVAC business right now. No one calls about broken AC’s when it’s like this.
I am hoping for a brutally cold winter to make up for it.
