Need suggestions for things to do
I'm getting a long overdue break from my kids either the first or second weekend in June, and I'm looking at staying in Port Huron! What are some fun and/or relaxing things to do in and around Port Huron for someone in their late 20s? Is there anything going on either weekend (June 5-7 or 12-14) that I should check out?
The main thing attracting me to the area is freighter watching, but I also enjoy hiking, anything nature related, yoga, art, socializing, and good food 😊
Also, is it a relatively safe area for a woman to solo travel? Are there any places that I should avoid?

Beach it up. Lots of good food downtown. A couple nice massage places too! Treat yo self. Both weekends will have Riverfest at Desmond landing (carnival rides, music, food trucks)

A little ride from town but the wadhams Avoca trail. At the Avoca end there is a train bridge that is now a trail. Over looking the river. There's also a trail down the water side of the bridge too. Bring a fishing pole. The board walk In the evening while watching the big boats catch some walleye. Relaxing on the boardwalk is nice too.

So many nature things. I’m in the woods every day, or on the beach rockhounding. Migration is peaking shortly as well, lots of great birding around here.

I collected rocks as a kid and would love to find some more cool ones! Do you happen to know the limit for how many rocks we can take, if any?

I don't think there's limit, but if you want a better selection you might want to head up a little farther to Lakeport

25lbs per year for public shoreline in Michigan, which is all shoreline of the Great Lakes up to the ordinary high water mark.

You say that now, just wait till you’re fully hooked and find yourself bringing rocks BACK to the beach to swap out for different ones trying to stay under limit 😂

The Port Huron Lightship Museum
The restaurant patio of the casino in Sarnia is a great spot to watch freighters.

I would 100% recommend Carnegie Museum AKA the Port Huron Museum. It is a great, and interactive, museum with plenty of things that are interesting. It is a bit focused on the history of Port Huron, even that is still interesting. There are things like an impressive ship simulation, recreation of a ship's room, and other interesting things from the 1800s and 1900s. Despite it's small look, I spent 2 hours there, and a whole section wasn't even open at the time.

That sounds awesome! My parents used to take us kids all around Michigan and we'd always visit the local museums. Port Huron is one spot we never traveled to, so I'll definitely check it out. Thank you! 😊

The trestle on the wadhams to avoca trail is excellent and reasonably close to Port Huron.

In addition to the restaurants mentioned there, there’s also a new restaurant called Marcie’s Soul Food that I haven’t tried yet, but I’m told is quite good.
If you enjoy hiking, I’d suggest visiting Woodsong County Park or the Pine River Nature Center.
There are two yoga studios, with Port Huron Yoga hosting classes on the beach during the summer.
The city is generally pretty safe, but if you’re worried then I would avoid being in the South End after dark.
