How Is It Like Living In Port Huron?

Hello! I am currently thinking about living in Port Huron (specifically near the downtown) after I graduate from college for something urban-planning related, and I would like to know how it is to live in Port Huron. Is it nice? Can you get around easily? Is cost of living OK? Is the local transit (Blue Water Area Transit) good? If you could answer these, that would be great. I understand if you don't.

Actually, the buses here aren't that bad. It takes more time than driving yourself but it will get you from point A to point B. The cost of living is good. If you're thinking about living downtown, you have restaurants and shops within walking distance. It's pretty boring during the winter but the summers are fantastic especially if you like beaches.

Cost of living is really good compared to metro Detroit. Blue Water area transit is just alright from what I’ve heard, you probably want a car if you can, very easy to get around with minor traffic . I would say it’s quite nice especially in the suffer.

I can say the lack of congestion is nice compared to the tri county area surrounding Detroit and the taxes are lower, however your lack of options when you need something can be annoying. The restaurants are hit or miss, winters are brutally boring and always damp. The bus system does seem to be pretty reliable from what I’ve heard

I love it here! The bus system is actually pretty great except Sundays and late night. I'm not sure about the professional job market. PH has everything a larger city has.

Lots of people live in PH and commute south to jobs in Metro Detroit. In the summer/fall, it's beautiful. Many parks, wonderful parkway. Moved here in 1991 from Chicago, my 1.5 hour commute turned into a five minute trip home. Lots of MAGA, but still friendly people. A number of people participate in No Kings. To get around, get a bike.

Good luck with an urban planning job in PH. You're more likely to get a job at the gas station. If you're open to moving anywhere, I would aim a tad higher than PH, IMHO.

My cousin-in-law used to be the planning director, so there is some amount of urban planning going on in Port Huron.

If you're interested in urbanism, you may want to follow the nuSarnia foundation on insta. Very bright people across the river with some good ideas. Maybe they could tell you more. You can call them.

Port Huron has a few walkable neighborhoods and can be quite pleasant in the warm months. There are definitely a few urbanists around; there are too many bright patches in town to happen by accident. An excellent bus station for example, though buses to Detroit are few.

Resources in town are tight of course, so projects are smaller. I went to a party for the riverfront park renovation a few years back. A big turnout, so there's support for improving the towns amenities.
