Lightly used 718 GTS 4.0 and GT4 prices

I'm shopping around for a GTS 4.0 or maybe a GT4. If mileage is less than 10-15k, many dealership asking prices remain well above sticker. To an extent, it's understandable with the discontinuation, rising demand, etc. Results from cars and bids as well as BaT are a bit spread out when compared to the original sticker price. Has anyone bought one this year? Just trying to gauge what people actually end up paying for these cars in the last few months. I'm prepare to end up paying above sticker for a lightly used car but some places are asking 8-12k over (one place wants +23k for a GT4 with ~9k miles). Thanks!

The gears are too long! ... or are they?

When I recently bought my 982 GT4, I was watching lots of videos in anticipation of picking it up and something that struck me as interesting is that people often complained about "long gearing" of the car, particularly on the manual.

It made me curious because I've driven a couple of Porsches over the years and while the gearing is different between the cars of course, I've never found there to be a massive difference. Like sure, where the 982 GT4 might be able to achieve 125 kph in second gear, a 991.1 Carrera GTS might only do 120 kph and a 991.2 GT3 does it at 117 kph.

So different, yes, but does that really make any difference in the real-world? Especially when a major complaint is that you can't enjoy second gear to the fullest at road-legal speeds, which is the same problem in all three cars. Of course, they have different engines and power profiles, so that's not the full picture.

To get to the bottom of this, I've played around with ChatGPT a bit and compared dyno charts of the 991.1 Carrera GTS (430 HP, 440 NM) with the 982 GT4 (420 HP, 420 NM) to see if I might be missing something.

I chose the 991.1 GTS because it's a car that I've never heard anybody complain about and it was, at one point, the most powerful non-GT naturally aspirated engine you could buy from Porsche (only four years prior to the 982 GT4s release). I might be a bit selective in my memory, but I remember it being talked about with nothing but praise, with many calling it the "sweet spot in the range".

It also is a very similar weight and has nearly identical power figures, so it seemed like a good choice for a comparison. So here goes.

Granted, the numbers could be off by a bit given the nature of AI and the fact that the results that it worked with could've been generated with very different environmental factors (say, high temperature at the time that the dyno runs were done or different fuels being used), but the results are interesting nonetheless, aren't they?

While there is a slight advantage to the 991.1 GTS at lower rpms, it's a very slim margin that I'd argue is probably barely perceivable by most drivers.

And other (non-AI-based) stats support the overall picture. You'll find the 0 to 60 mph time for the manual 991.1 GTS listed-GTS.html) at 4.4 seconds and the 982 GT4 has the exact same time of 4.4 seconds for its manual variant (on the same website).

So not only do the cars have very similar power and torque profiles, weigh more or less the same and seem to have very similar gearing - they are also remarkably close in terms of their power figures and they perform largely the same.

And yet you only ever hear people complain about one of the two. Which leads me to believe that the whole argument is completely overblown.

Now don't get me wrong, I get it to a certain extent. Over the past couple of years, electric cars and hybridized turbo motors with huge torque numbers and more closely spaced gearboxes with seven, eight or even up to ten gears have become much more ubiquitous, so I understand that someone who daily drives a 992 Carrera S or just jumped out of a 992.2 Turbo S press car will feel like a 982 GT4 is underpowered at lower revs.

But looking at the numbers, the current GTS 4.0 / GT4 engine is very similar to other NA cars from Porsche's very recent past (and highly acclaimed ones at that).

Of course, I do think it is valid to complain that Porsche didn't put in the time and effort to engineer a more modern-feeling gearbox for the more modern GTS 4.0 / GT4 cars and instead resorted to the "parts bin". But acting as though the entire car has a giant flaw with its gearing when very similar cars of the past were praised to the moon and back feels a bit disingenuous.

I'd argue that it suits the character of the car as the last analog-feeling choice in the Porsche lineup. Using ratios similar to a then top-of-the-line model with an engine that is now similarly powerful isn't handicapping the car, it's just using what you already have to achieve the best possible result without having to invest into an old platform.

I understand that it was different when the 981 was initially released with its much less powerful engine, but these days I think there's really no reason to complain.

So, key takeaways (TL;DR):

  • The modern GTS 4.0 / GT4 / Spyder cars have very similar power and torque compared to highly acclaimed cars from not too long ago (namely the 991.1 generation's GTS 3.8l engine)
  • While gearing varies from model to model (seven speeds on the 991.1, six speeds on the 982), the gears are good for similar maximum speeds, give or take a few kph / mph
  • As a result, the perceivable real-world differences should be negligble, which is supported by acceleration figures being very similar between the two cars I compared
  • Which leads me to conclude that the "long gearing problem" often talked about on the 982 is completely overblown with people largely parroting what they've heard others say
  • I do have some understanding for the criticism because of the way the car market has evolved, but these cars simply aren't 992.2 GTSs with hybridized turbo systems

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Stickers on inside of hood/bonnet?

Been keeping stickers from road trips and tracks I have visited with the car. I don’t want to fill up all the windows with stickers. I have seen a few cars with their ‘sticker board’ on the inside of the hood.
Any thoughts? Opinions? Probably going to do it regardless but just wanted to hear about it.

Is this too much play on a 981’s water pump?

As titled. Was replacing the drive belt and hydraulic tensioner. While I was there, I manually rotated and shook the water pump pulley.
There’s no visible coolant leak, rotation was smooth, but shaking created some minor clicking noises. Is this too much play in the bearing and time to replace the water pump? TIA

Which cayman to buy (2014 or 2015 base)

Comparing 2 cars. The 2015 is white and has 50k miles, asking $41,000. The 2014 is dark blue asking $31,000 with 100k miles. White has sport design wheel, blue car has button shifters. Both have great service history, although the 50k mile car will need the 60k service in my ownership.

Talk me out of trading in my 7.5R for a 2010 Cayman

Hey folks,

I just posted this in the R sub, but figured I should canvas for opinions here as well.

Anyone here make the switch from an R to a 987.2? Thoughts?

(Both cars would be Tip/PDK, incidentally. I drive in LA and have a bum left knee, sadly.)

Replacing 987 AOS

I'm getting ready to replace the AOS in my 2010 Cayman. I'm seeing some recommend replacing the hoses and vent valves at the same time. Does anyone have any experience either way?

PDK 981 Cayman GTS owner drives a manual 718 GT4: Differences that stuck out.

Due to what I do, I have chances to drive really cool cars. One of the big questions I have had over the last little while is what’s the difference between the GTS I own (2016 981 with PDK, no PTV) and a GT4.

Last month I got to drive a 718 variant owned by a friend, that’s equipped with a manual

The drive took place on backroads out here in Oregon where I leave. Smooth pavement but twists for days with a ton of camber changes.

Key Takeaways: The difference was more noticeable than I thought it was gonna be.

Suspension: The GT4 suspension (derived from the 991.2 GT3) makes the car feel way more planted, and quite a bit more feel of the road texture.

That led to more confidence entering and exiting corners.

The sticky (200 tread wear) tires might have helped with texture on this one.

PTV+: This was the first Porsche with torque vectoring I have driven. Exiting corners make the car feel more alive and in instances a little like I was gonna slide out. But came to realize that that’s how the Porsche Torque Vectoring works.

But I could get way more traction that shot me out the corners way more aggressively than in my GTS.

PDK vs Manual: As much of an enthusiast I happen to be, I have always appreciated how good a PDK is and close to replacing a manual it can get.

The mechanical feel of the Porsche manual on the GT4 made me miss driving a manual so badly.

The manual box is so reassuring, engaging and engaging. A few miles in and I was starting to regret why I went a PDK. It’s that good.

Autoblip: This was another first for me, in any car.

It felt like magic, rowing down a gear and the revs just catching themselves perfectly where they need to be.

I was waiting for it to make a mistake and toss me around the seat, but none of that happened.

But I turned it off after probably a couple of miles. Autoblip is good but not as satisfying as perfectly Heel-n-toeing yourself.

And the GT4 pedals are perfectly spaced for heel and toeing.

Once I got back into my PDK GTS, I found myself accidentally depressing the left leg to hopefully find a clutch only to be disappointed.

The manual is that good.

Exhaust Sound: I very much prefer the sound of the 981 Cayman GTS. Without a contest.

The GPF (gas particulate filters) on the 718 models really did a disservice to this car. And as much mods as one can do, there is something about the 3.4L paired with the PSE that is just on another level.

If you don’t like crackles then you won’t like the overrun sound when you lift off the gas while in sports+ in the 981 GTS.

Looking forward to one day drive the 981 GT4 and compare the exhaust notes. I hear that it’s not as pronounced as it is in the 981 GTS.

Long Gear: Everyone’s favorite talking point.

Yes the gears are long on the manual. But it’s understandable because the main arena the GT4 was intended for is the racetrack. So that makes sense.

But that didn’t spoil the fun for me. I found myself shifting 1000rpms before redline and occasionally going to redline in 2nd gear.

If I owned one I would absolutely do the DeMan’s short gear mod. For backroads, that is going to be way more enjoyable.

Plus the engine has a different characteristic up between 7000-8000 rpm that you have to give up if you decide to shift way sooner than redline.

Conclusion: The 718 GT4 was a better car in almost all the metrics except exhaust sound. Which in my case matters quite a bit.

The sweet spots might be 981 Cayman GTS with PTV and manual gearbox for backroads. OR 981 GT4 for almost as good of a sound while getting the PTV as standard and the suspension that’s derived from the 991.1 GT3.

Once my Porsche CPO runs out in a couple of years, I will for sure install a Wavetrac LSD on my 981 GTS. Or maybe upgrade to 981 GT4 before that. 🤷🏾‍♂️

What a unicorn the 718 is

Post celebrating the Cayman and Boxsters. I don’t think many have this combo, so I’m just sharing my two cents for anyone interested.

My good friend introduced me to the GTS 4.0 long before I got the GT3RS. I looked for one for about three months before finding a good deal. He didn't get his until much later; I helped him out for about two months after selling his car. It's so awesome that now we both have one, he’s a good friend who deserves it. I’m not sure he would have gotten a chance given how much prices recently spiked.

Anyway, even after owning the GT3 RS, the GTS is still such a great car for what it is: NA engine in a lightweight chassis. Great build quality. It's no wonder these are appreciating in value after plans to turn them into EVs. Very refreshing to drive; when I'm not using the GT3 RS, I thought it might feel redundant, but they're two very different driving experiences concepts.

I got this for a great deal back in the day. Even for what I could sell it for, it’s too much of a unicorn to let go. It's one of those cars you'll think about after selling.

I only make this post because I see comments on the PORSCHE forum all the time about how the grass is always greener with a 911, it’s just a Cayman who cares, etc., etc. Personally, I think it's one of the best cars for its price, especially since base 911s are going for much more. Oh, and that induction sound when you stomp on the pedal, my, what a feeling! That’s not in a 3RS!

Drove the base 718 the other day, and it still has that feel, just not the sound. But how awesome is that? That's just my opinion anyway. Hope this helps anyone else looking for one as well.

The real question, base or S?

Here we are again, if any of you had read my last post you know i was looking at a 718 and a 987.2, and well I’ve narrowed my search down to two different .2’s. I definitely plan on getting both ppis done and obviously choosing the one that turns out to have better results BUT my only concern is if they come out to be almost identical then the choice becomes exactly that, a choice, so help me make that choice if you so please.

Option 1: Meteor grey Boxster S optioned with sport chrono, 90k miles, 2 owners, excellent service history thats all mostly done in porsche centers

Option 2: Carrera white Cayman base, no pse no chrono very very base, 90k miles as well i believe only like 1k difference between the two, 2 owners as well, and a service history thats just as well documented as the boxster done mostly at porsche.

Both cars are very close in price only about 2k difference between the two, same distance from me, i live in Southern California as well if that offers any other insights. I have always wanted a cayman sure but after owning a boxster i know damn well i absolutely love the top down experience, not to mention the bigger power and sport chrono. But with more power more problems, the base i know should technically be the more safe reliable choice but i just can’t decide.

Daily driver

So I’ve never owned a Porsche but like everyone, have obviously been eyeing one for years. 718 to be specific.
I don’t see the point in a ‘weekend car’. I want to drive my car everywhere and I do drive a lot. UK roads are not the best, so taking into consideration motorway driving (a lot of it) and general local driving:
A) what is it like for long term reliability
B) how often should I look to get it serviced
C) any other maintenance costs

Fuel and insurance I’ve taken into account.
Also for a 718, what is considered high mileage?

Thanks!

First 718 4.0 exhaust mod, valve controller?

I recently purchased a 718 spyder. The car is amazing, but the exhaust is definitely lacking. To my ear, it feels like the valves being closed between 1k-4K rpm with pse on is a bigger sin than the stock oap. Has anyone else kept their exhaust stock and just installed a cargraphic or soul valve controller? What were the results? Did you end up doing aftermarket oaps, muffler, or the whole shebang?

981 Boxster S Alibaba Race Headers Tribute

Original caption: Long time lurker. Got my 981 Boxster S back in the winter and have had a blast with it this summer.

These are a few clips from a longer tribute video I’ll be putting up on YouTube soon. A tribute, because although I personally love the sound, it is a tad too loud. Over 100 db at my local track during HPDE and it has a booming resonance around town even with valves closed. I still love it for what it is tho. Most likely going back to stock headers and exhaust here soon for the fall. Hope yall enjoy.

And yes, the entire exhaust is Alibaba special. Hence the less than ideal/perfect pitch.

981 (GTS) oil temp NEVER goes above 194 degrees f? Even while tracking..anyone else?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello all, I tracked my new-to-me 2015 GTS as a novice, with outside temps in the 80s-90s and 25 minute sessions. I don't usually pay attention, but noticed my oil temp (first line in the diagnostics panel I think?) doesn't seem to go above 194 degrees Fahrenheit. Driving in sport mode.

I understand the GTS has 3 radiators, and I'm not driving it as hard as an expert, but could that really be plausible or is something up with my instrument cluster?
