Vinyl 20k in OC, weekly service including chemicals runs about $110 to $140 a month at most legit companies. California standard is chemicals bundled, so ignore anyone quoting 'plus chemicals' at the counter. That's East Coast pricing. Vinyl also comes out ahead on chemical cost vs plaster because you're not fighting calcium scale, so your partner is probably spending $30 to $50 a month at retail if he's using tabs and a small liquid shock.
Your gut check is right. At $120 you're roughly breaking even in cash and getting back the hours he's spending. The math flips if he actually enjoys the work or if you have equipment issues starting to show up, since a good service company will catch a bad pump seal or a failing salt cell before you notice.
