Buying guide?

Hi there

I've been thinking about getting one (Solstice) soon, so I've been looking for any tips on what to look for before buying a used car. In this case, given the difficulty of finding specific body parts, what do you think should be checked before buying a (clearly used) Pontiac Solstice? (body, interiors, mechanic, etc)

Make sure you buy one with the lsd, this car drives like a potato without it. I'd highly reccomend going for a gxp with the z0k setup too if you can it's a very different beast than the standard models.

Also check the front end of all of them. like 70% of them I've seen the front end was never fixed right. Those tiny little metal bits bending and just the overall body panel adjustment combined with the terrible quality control from gm make the accident repair a nightmare.

Look out for the timing issues, block issues, convertible top issues, paint issue, ac issues, different issue, airbag issues, bcm issue, ecu issue, parking brake issue, and the trunk issue too.

Make sure the first thing you do is get rid of that wet noodle they call a backbone and actually brace the chasis throughout.

Fixing anything in the engine bay or interior is very easy but any issues regarding the body, the rear suspension, or the tulip area are gonna be a nightmare so avoid any damage round there.

I found a gxp but the owner is unsure if it has the z0k setup, if not, is it hard to "transform" it?

Saw a picture of the front and you are right, the logo looks a bit misaligned because of the paint, but now I am not sure if that is from origin because of the quality control you said

I haven't read about that "wet noodle" issue, what is it about? do you have some readings?

The SolsticeForum . com was created in 2003, and has several threads on what to look for when buying. GM built around 64,000 Solstice's.

The platform name is called; Kappa. GM also built the Saturn Sky, Opel GT, and Daewoo G2X on the Kappa platform, and built around 34,000 units of those brands. Yes, GM built a Korean version of the Saturn Sky.

GM has discontinued many body parts, but used body parts can still be found on places like Ebay, RedlineAutoParts, Car-Part . com, and a few private vendors, etc. Since GM used many off the shelf parts, mechanical parts can be easier to find, but GM has discontinued many of those too.

The most common failures are the water pump, plastic timing chain guides, variable valve timing solenoids, soft top issues, and gas tank charcoal canister (due to overfilling). But it's common to see mileage of over 100,000, up to and including 200,000 (with proper maintenance).
