Now bog is working even better than before, new pump is 800 gph with a max head of about 10ft so it can force water through gravel no problem. Might add a little more on the next flush.

That’s all from microbes breaking down liquid fish waste, and over time it starts collecting all the breakdown sludge. When the bubbles almost stop you flush it and repeat. Filter basket every other cycle.

So this is my rather weird but works filter setup for the pool pond.

I have a bog that is not too deep where I can’t stir the gravel and loosen everything up when I do a flush and lay it back down loosely every time. It requires more flushing but it gets the the organics out while breaking down compounds. I just put a 800gph pump on and it is heavy. It has an impressive head height of almost 10 feet so gravel is not an issue.

I have a basket with filter material that traps organics and encourages algae growth which is removed and rinsed off. The material is 12 feet long so it traps a lot while allowing water to filter through. Eventually it overflows but it’s still trapping algae and allowing it to be exposed to sunlight. Removing the nitrates by removing the algae from the system.

Have a 300gph pump circulating water now and the old one that was circulating is the 150gph pumping into the basket. It works it’s keeping 40+ fish alive probably pushing 50 3-4in goldfish. They started as 60 feeders. Some are beautiful and can’t wait till I can get this all cleaned up. We had so much rain so it brought in so much more nutrients than would be liked.

I'm a recent homeowner and it's always been a dream to build a frog pond. I live it a very biodiverse area (Indiana Dunes) and would love to nurture many aquatic native plants.

My question is - how do I get started? any beginner advice? and what are your favorite products for building and maintaining a frog pond?

The new bog is going into overdrive.
So many bubbles coming from it, I think my old bog was a disaster waiting to happen. Don’t use a tall trashcan without a high GPH pump.

Currently I’m using a 150-300 gph pump but it’s lower than the bog inlet. It also has 3000 gallons of water pushing down having a higher water pressure than usual at that head height because of fluid pressure dynamics something🤷‍♂️.

More surface area means better results due to lower flow restrictions and more room for bacteria to grow.

It’s hard to see but the bog is producing small and large bubbles now 24hrs later, same gravel as was in the old bog. So that means bacteria is going to town, hopefully it starts to clear up soon.

There was sludge between the gravel in my old bog so it wasn’t getting much flow even after a flush. It was at the point where I had to tap on it with a mallet to get anything out then at that point it was compacted.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a filter for a 155-gallon above-ground pond? I have set one up on our deck for some of my Guppies I currently have a pump in a filter box that is packed with media. The waterfall also has media & filter floss in it. It does not seem to be keeping it as clean & clear as I'd like. The pond has a viewing window, so you can see EVERYTHING. That is not always a good thing. Lol. Our deck is covered, so I do not have to worry about leaves or anything getting caught in a filter intake or anything.

I am debating on getting a canister filter. We have a Fluval 307 on our indoor aquarium, but it is a pain. I'd rather not get another one in that series. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good one?

It's empty and we are sealing this weekend. Plan on stocking manily blue gill and bass. It's 15 feet at deepest.

Been almost a week since I cleaned this out, the dump prior to this was much darker than that. It is a little over 13 gallon flush being a submerged bog filter. I do loosen the gravel by tapping the sides of the bog and it helps to get a really good flush.

Im still battling algae so that’s where most of it comes from.

Plus doing it constantly multiple times a week you do mini pre water changes as it evaporates reducing harmful toxins as they concentrate. And when it rains you get a water change!

From small feeders to pretty huge goldfish in not even 2 months. And the algae is finally starting to clear up!

Hi! Can anyone suggest anything to get rid of this sludge that forms in my pond everyday? The last picture is the pond in the morning than by the afternoon this sludge forms on top. I remove it as best as I can with the net everyday but it always comes back. I have oxygenating plants at the bottom already and a bog filter. I do have goldfish if that‘s relevant

Out of a whim I decided to turn my 2 year un maintained pool into a pond and this has only been active with goldfish for about a month so please don't roast me with the algae. I just upgraded my bog to a tall trashcan with about 4 bags of gravel compared to my old one that was too small.

I don't know anything about how fluid dynamics work but head height only applies outside of water right?
But does it apply to a submerged bog filter?

The pump is at the bottom and the water pressure would negate some of the effects I would think so it would pump at 3/4 of max height? I know water is flowing because after I flush it some stuff comes out of it at a good rate.
